I decided to check out some Omaha BBQ for lunch today. I stumbled across the Boxer BBQ near the Hayward Market area as I was taking a driving tour around the area. It’s a unique spot and space for that matter and over all its a solid BBQ stop. I went with the beef brisket sandwich combo(includes 2 sides for around $ 11) I went with slaw, tasty and a bit on the creamy side and BBQ baked beans that were just fantastic. The brisket was tasty, nice and smokey with a generous portion. I was surprised to find out they use a bottled BBQ sauce(Catlemens) which is good but come on ! You claim competition BBQ and serve over the counter sause? None the less for desert I had to try the deep fried bread pudding with vanilla ice cream which was a bit much. A huge serving($ 10) and I really couldn’t tell it was deep fried. Over all I’d come back but not my first choice.

Boxer bbq was phenomenal! My fiancé and I went there this evening and didn’t realize they closed at 8, we arrived at 7:30, and the staff was very nice about it. I have never seen my fiancé eat so much before! He had the BBQ nachos and I had the mooing pig sandwich and the meat was cooked perfectly. We’re only in town for 10 days and will be eating there at least 4 more times! Highly recommend coming here!

Boxer BBQ. I’ve been coming here off and on for years and they still serve up amazing food. They have been remodeling their dining room for quite some time so I’m curious to see what its going to look like when they are done with it. My ‘go-to’ for boxer is their day-old ribs. Whenever I have some guys coming over, either for a football game or whatever, I always try to make my way down to Boxer to see if they have day-old ribs, which are from the previous day that they didn’t use. They are cold and in the fridge to the left right when you walk in. They are half off their original prices on them and all you have to do is reheat them in the oven. Great deal for the money. And they were still tender as ever. I have a couple minor gripes about Boxer. Their dining room being closed for so long and the fact that they don’t accept credit cards at all. They point you to an ATM machine right next to the fridge whenever the customer whips out a credit card. They didn’t like paying the credit card fee’s so they put that on the consumer, kind of annoying. Overall, Boxer makes great sandwiches and great BBQ overall. Their best feature if the day-old ribs though. A heck of a deal.

This is a roadhouse barbeque place. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much but when you go for barbeque, it is the aroma that that you check, not the appearances. As you walk in, the front portion is dedicated to the catering and take out clientele.(Does that word apply to barbeque joints?) There is plenty of tables for any size crowd. Both my son and I ordered the sandwich combos, his pulled pork and mine half pork half brisket(called the«mooing pig»). Each came with two side dishes. The sandwiches came naked as there is a choice of four barbecue sauces on the table: smoky, honey bourbon, sweet, and spicy. My sides consisted of the corn bread and baked beans. My son had also baked beans and onion rings. The baked beans were wonderfully flavored with a little sweetness, the cornbread was full and moist. More importantly, both meat sandwiches were prepared great. I recommend stopping by this place if you live in area or if you’re on a road trip. Lipsmacking good.

The pulled pork and ribs are awesome. Cornbread and honey is also great. My wife had the prime rib and absolutely loved it. We will definitely be back.

Best BBQ joint in town. Cornbread is the best I have had anywhere. Nice atmosphere and good prices.

My wife had a hankering for BBQ and we wanted to try Boxer BBQ. So we drove to Council Bluffs on a Friday afternoon at 5pm. After driving past a «drive in» liquor store, and avoiding a couple of the neighbors playing basketball in the street — we parked and walked in. There was a vibrant to go business, but the restaurant itself was only half full. We were greeted by one of the bus boys, and a cook while we waited to be seated. Then we were seated immediately. I noticed some band equipment that was covered up in the corner and wondered how much entertaining they do in the restaurant? I.e. the decorations were spartan… i.e. it is just a BBQ joint. I don’t expect a lot, especially if the BBQ is as good as I had heard! Ran into a friend in the restaurant. He mentioned that we should try the corn muffins that were more like corn cake. He also recommended the ribs — but ribs are not my style. I ordered the standard BBQ meal that I use to grade BBQ restaurants with. A pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw, and baked beans. The pork had a nice smoky flavor. I added a bit of sauce… the seasonal bottle of sauce — if memory serves — was called«New Orleans.» It was the best of the bunch. Meanwhile, they had a spicy, mild, and sweet. The sweet was good — but almost too sweet for me. The pork had a little bit of fat in it, which wasn’t a bad thing — just not something I am normally seeing. They served it up on a nice bun, but nothing special. The cole slaw was creamy — but tasted a lot like something that may have come out of a tub. Meanwhile, the beans were not anything special. They were smoky, but again, not remarkable. I did not finish either. Meanwhile — the MOST impressive part of this meal was the dessert. I shared a brick of bread pudding. Yes, it was the size of a brick and it was smothered with caramel sauce! It was enough dessert to share between my wife, my son, and I. We also had a little bit to take home! it was a combination style pudding/monkey bread/cinnamon roll. They served it with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream. The only problem with this dessert was that it could have used another scoop of ice cream — because it was so HUGE! Would I go back to Boxer BBQ? Yeah, but only if I was already in the neighborhood. Which to be honest — doesn’t happen very often for the Omaha crowd.

This food is to DIE for! The nachos are my favorite. You get a TON of food and it is never disappointing. I think we are going to use them for our next catering event. LOVE!

Boxer BBQ is great food served by friends. The place may seem a bit odd — strange chairs, etc — but the food is worth a trip. The owner is usually around and will chat you up if you’re friendly. You can tell the employees are more friends/family so it’s a pleasure interacting with them. They could hiss at me and I’d still come back for that brisket.

Boxer BBQ is hands-down the best BBQ joint in the Omaha area. Their pulled pork sandwiches are amazing. Tasty, juicy, flavorful. Don’t let the no frills dining room fool you; come here for the food, not the ambiance. Even better, grab takeout and during spring, summer or fall walk on over to Bayliss Park and enjoy your grub outdoors. Admittedly, the«bang for your buck» element isn’t what it used to be here. When everyone caught on to this formerly hidden gem, the owners wised up and adjusted their prices accordingly. Too, quantity used to be hit or miss; sometimes you’d feel spoiled with a heaping portion of pork! But now proportions feel more exact and consistent. The owner’s great, and everyone is always pleasant when I stop in for my takeout. Also: ½ off older meats in the refrigerators.

Finally tried Boxer BBQ in Council Bluffs. Closest thing to good KC-style barbecue in the Omaha metro area. Really, really good ribs and a pulled pork/beef brisket combo sandwich. The best side was an order of beans– nicely done with little chunks of rib meat in them. Good slaw and potato salad. The corn on the cob was overcooked and the cornbread was bland and overly moist. It looks like their primary focus is carryout and catering. FYI, they don’t have a liquor license. The young man behind the counter said it was okay to BYOB and directed me to the drive through liquor store next door. Let’s just say you ought to use the drive through. The local character buying after me(the store is apparently locked up after dark) at the walk up window advised me that it was a pretty sketchy area to walking around in.

I finally made it back on a Friday night to try the smoked prime rib. My wife ordered one too, so not much new to report on besides the meat. Like other meals at Boxer, the prime rib dinner seems a bit pricy until you see just how big a pound of prime rib is on your plate. I could do with a lower-priced portion not sized for a Cornhusker center. But I managed to polish it off(I shouldn’t have done that), and my wife, employing intelligence I often lack, took a third of hers home in a box. So how was it? On its own, you can taste the smoke even in the center of the prime rib. Of course, it’s good to cut it thinly across to get a bit of rub and fat layer in each bit, but I started out with a chunk right out of the middle, knowing that’s the part of the prime rib that gets ruined when restaurants don’t really know what they’re doing. It was tasty, tender, and kinda smoky. Nice. But when I say«on its own,» I mean without any sauce. While it’s good without sauce, it really comes alive with the horseradish sauce they make up for it. It’s really the completion of the overall flavor, and shouldn’t be ordered without it. It’s not a horseradish sauce like you’re thinking, either. It’s mayo-based, actually quite light on horseradish, and lightly spiced so it winds up almost a horseradish remoulade. It takes a quite good hunk of meat and puts it over the top. I should say I tried the two bbq sauces on a couple of bites out of curiosity. Skip it. Go with the horsey sauce. Another thing I didn’t mention before: it’s a Pepsi place, which knocks it down a bit in my opinion, but the real kicker is NOSWEETTEA! What’s the deal with that? They’ll tell you they have sweeteners you can put in your tea. Sorry, we sweet tea lovers will tell you it’s just not the same. Even Mc-stinkin’-Donald’s has sweet tea these days. Get with the program, Boxer!

Played golf in the heat last Thursday with a couple of buddies at Fox Run in CB, I told them I had a little surprise after we played and asked if either had eaten at Boxer. They both said they were big fans of Famous Dave’s when I mentioned BBQ(gag me with a dried out rib bone), when I told them after eating at Boxer they’d never darken the door of a Famous Dave’s again, they both laughed. HAHAHA after another stellar 5 star experience, they pretty much agreed. I had the brisket’ Frank had a full slab of spareribs(didn’t finish only because he said he HAD to take some home to the wife) and John had the pulled pork. Thanks Jim and family! You guys are the premier Q operation in the Omaha/CB metro hands down!

Another 5-star trip to Boxer BBQ. Went in to get a pulled pork sandwich and fries to go and ended up meeting the extremely kind and generous owner, Jim. He let us know that he was whippin’ up a batch of extra spicy BBQ sauce, and said if we wanted to try some we were more than welcome. Not only did he let us take a big ol’ cup of it to go, he even gave us a generous sample on some pulled pork. And it was DELICIOUS. Tangy, spicy, still sweet… and the heat kicks in and keeps on elevating minutes after eating it. YUM. He also told us about a new white sauce they have. Basically it’s a creamy horseradish dipping sauce with a few other tasty spices in it… we took two containers with us and dipped our fries in it. Wow. Beats the heck out of boring ketchup, that’s for sure. And the white sauce is great if you get the extra spicy BBQ because it cools your palate and stops the tingles so you can EATMORESPICYBBQ! All around, another 5-star trip to Boxer. All the girls are really nice and friendly, and Jim’s generosity and enthusiasm for his creations are the icing on the cake. I LOVEBOXERBBQ. Ask for the extra spicy BBQ and the white sauce. Do it!

This place is a MUSTSTOP for the Omaha/Council Bluffs area! Seriously good, quality bbq. It’s so good you don’t need sauce! My husband and I eat a lot of BBQ, being from KC and since we smoke meat ourselves we’re always out to try new places. After reading other reviews we decided to check it out. It was worth it! These guys know how to smoke meat, not only that but they know how get it on the table fresh and hot. So many other places fail right here. We tried the brisket and the pulled pork. Try it first without sauce; it’s tender, juicy and has incredible flavor. It’s no surprise Boxer BBQ has won 1st Place for these meats. I agree with others that the baked beans were yummy, but a little sweet for me. I’d also say the cornbread is too sweet, but that’s cause I’m not a sweet cornbread kinda girl. My husband devoured it. I won’t repeat what others have said. But if you are within 50 miles of you, it’d be a terrible shame if you didn’t check it out. Beware because once you know quality bbq, other places will pale in comparison.
