This might be the best smoked whitefish I’ve ever had. The meat is not dried out, and in fact is very flavorful and reminiscent of a good smoked ham. At $ 5/lb, it certainly is a bargain. They also have brown sugar smoked whitefish & salmon, as well as regular smoked salmon. Be sure to try the pickled herring if they have it($ 5/pint); it is also delicious. Prices are very reasonable, but it is cash or check. Call ahead to see what their hours are in the winter.

Halvorson’s is the local fishing operation, suppling fresh fish to many area restaurants. It also has a small counter where the rest of us can buy fresh off the boat whitefish, salmon, herring, and whatever else they caught that day. In my mind, it is one of the best things about this area. We stop at the farmer’s market in Corny on Thursdays, get fresh fish, and head to the cabin for the weekend with all the fresh and local we can eat. The owners are great, and have brought us to the back when we were asking questions about the herring to show us the day’s catch and explain how they process them. It is family run and a business I love to support. The smoked fish is fantastic too.

A very non-touristy, no frills Lake Superior fish store in the Cornucopia harbor. Despite having a small front counter, this is a fairly high volume store. The smoked fish, especially the«brown sugar smoked» salmon and whitefish were both excellent. I thought their smoked fish was much better(more flavorful, less salty) than another very highly acclaimed store in a larger(for this area) city down the road. They also have some delicacies, such as lake trout cheeks. All the fish is locally caught, other than the salmon. Well worth a visit. If you continue further east down the gravel marina road, you will come to a public artesian well with delicious water.
