I have not heard of Ben Mathis until recently, as in, less than a week ago. My sister invited me to see him at the Corinth Coliseum For $ 10.00 a ticket it was worth a gamble. I have no idea what I am in for. Is this guy twangy, countrified, rock and roll, bluesy? I just don’t know. I am worried about the venue he is playing in. It is a small building and I know the acoustics are great for watching plays, but not so sure about loud music and instruments. We arrived a little early at Will Call to get our tickets and the extremely attractive and courteous guy tells us to come back in about half an hour to get a free CD. We take a stroll around a block or two and burn up a few minutes. When we arrived back at Will Call, a different, yet very attractive man greeted us with a warm smile. He is as outgoing and friendly as the previous man. We all said we hoped the best for Ben and that he would be big soon. Then he told us he was Ben’s father. The Emcee was funny and gave a brief background history on Ben, as well as, the band members. He told us Ben has written 100 songs. From the second the band took the stage Ben was very personable and remained that way throughout the entire event. Ben shared stories behind his songs. He also gave a shout out to a couple local eateries they had visited.
There was a good mixture of upbeat music with great guitar work, acoustic sets and even a part where Ben let the band take a break. During this break Ben wanted to play cover songs. I wanted so bad to yell out Copperhead Road or Guitar Town. Toward the end of the show the Emcee informed us they would be filming a music video for the song ‘Rockstar’ This song will be the single from the CD titled ‘Feels Like Home’. The mosh pit was filled with as many people as it could hold. We all clapped, sang along and took random selfies as they filmed. We ran through the song three times. Fun was had by all! After a short cool down period Ben and the band were in the lobby so Ben could sign CDs and sell tee shirts. The band stood off to the side during the autograph session. When the three of us walked up to get our autographs we asked the band members to sign also. They were shocked that we asked them and they said that was their first time signing. This has to be one of the most attractive entourages and musicians out there. Their wonderful and humble personalities just enhanced their outer persona. We all walked into the Coliseum tonight blindly but all left new fans of Ben Mathis. We wouldn’t hesitate to see him again.
