Believe or not, back in Detroit, BBQ has become a real thing with several excellent BBQ joints across the metro area to the point that I have become an amateur smoker myself. Upon visiting Kansas on business, I was excited to try the more regional Kansas City style BBQ. First the good, since I was here with a sick family member I ordered out. The order was taken well and upon my arrival, the staff was courteous and helpful, and honestly appeared to enjoy their job. We ordered 2 pick two specials, she ordered the pulled pork, brisket with cornbread, cole slaw and mac n cheese; I ordered the pulled pork, ribs, BBQ beans, mac n cheese, and cornbread. To start, their sauces appear to be homemade and are very good with 3 different types. The ribs were smokey, almost over smoked with no discernible other flavored. The ribs fell off the bone and they weren’t bad, but they really weren’t good either, fair. The BBQ beans were rich and fairly tasty. She said the cole slaw was actually quite good and cornbread was good also. The Mac n cheese was serviceable but tasted like it was made with a large portion of Valveeta. The pulled pork, although juicy, was absolutely devoid of seasoning, bark, or salt and actually tasted boiled and not smoked. The brisket was dry, had a slight taste, and was closer to something one might get from a cafeteria in college. Sadly, when a BBQ joint’s sauces, sides, and service are the best things you can write about, the result is two stars.

Very disappointing. Recognizing that you don’t have many choices in a small town but went there on the recommendation of two people. I ordered the brisket with beans and fries. The brisket was very fatty and i couldn’t eat but half of the order. The sections of the brisket that weren’t fatty left a bitter after taste. The waitress and owner indicated that they smoke the brisket with pine wood. Unfortunately it just didn’t work for me. The owner apologized and brought out what he said was a better and less fatty brisket however it was just the same and still was inedible. Still trying to get rid of this bitter after taste.

We really liked this place. The atmosphere was neat, BBQ is great, and service was very nice. We got the cheese fries, which has my kids addicted now… Any of the BBQ meat was great, but we didn’t really care for the sides other than my greens and the French fries. Multiple barbecue sauces on the table allowed for yummy experimentation. We would go again for sure.

Great BBQ for a small town. Nice atmosphere and the brisket was very good. I wouldn’t change anything here. Sauce is good too.

The pulled pork was delicious! 3 different choices of BBQ sauce to use or mix together had a good sweet flavor. The potato salad and bakes beans were very good also. They have a nice little outside seating area that is quiet and a little cozy. If in the area again, I will stop for more.

If you like yesterday’s ribs reheated this is the place to go. My friend days the same thing about the brisket. I do like the sweet chili mustard on the sausage which adds a nice kick. I would probably pass if given the choice about eating here again!

I think the review written by Laura must have been from an employee. If you love BBQ do not eat here unless you stay away from it. They put the ribs under a broiler to reheat them and they are very fatty. The BBQ sauce is a poor attempt at something. They would be better off just buying bottles of sauce at Walmart and serving that. The coleslaw is store bought not homemade. The only redemption at all was their sweet potato chips, they are excellent.

I absolutely LOVED this place! I was on a road trip and drove from Oklahoma City to the Nebraska state line, hoping to find some good barbecue there. Some farmers(who took a photo of me with the state sign) let me know that the closest truck stop was up in Hebron and the closest Café; the next exit. Tired of driving, I took the exit, but didn’t find anything. Remembering that I had passed a quaint town about 60 miles back(Concordia), I decided to find somewhere to eat there. And thank goodness I did, because Heavy’s was awesome! For starters, you can’t get a meal of ribs with sides for $ 10.99 where I live(Oregon). And you can’t get ribs for happy hour anywhere that I’ve seen, so this was a good, good deal. With the recommended rib plate, I was allowed 3 sides. I choose beans, corn bread and cole slaw. Yum, yum, yum and yum! The ribs were soo juicy they just fell off the bone. Not only that, but they had a lot of meat on them! The sides were all fantastic too. It was a sweltering hot day, but I wanted to be in the sunshine, so I sat in their cute fenced patio area by myself and took it all in. The customers inside, where the AC was cranked probably thought I was crazy. My only mistake was ordering a beer, a good one, because I had about 3 hours of driving to get me back to Wichita and the combo of that and the sunshine was really tiring. Finally, the food came fast and waiter was very courteous and flipping adorable! He looked like he belonged in One Direction and had I been a teenager, I would have been giddy. Oh who am I kidding, I was giddy.

This review is for the brewery /bar that is attached to Heavy’s BBQ. They share a kitchen and the brewery doesn’t seem to have a Unilocal page so I assume this is the right place to write it. Maybe I’m a big city elitist, but I had the absolute worst beer I ever tasted at this place. It was a locally made wheat beer and while I applaud them for making the own brew from wheat grown right in Concordia, I can’t even begin to explain how bad it was. My friends struggled to drink all of theirs. The other beers on tap were good, and the barbecue was good. Nothing to write home about, but certainly better than the other options in town(Taco John’s, Pizza Hut, Subway, and McDonald’s). Anyways, I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re stuck in Concordia, but whatever you do, don’t try the wheat beer!

Since this was my first time in Concordia, I did a google search for local restaurants, and found Heavys, and thought it looked pretty good — also, the hotel I stayed at recommended it for dinner — so I ventured out a few nights ago. They were very accommodating, the service from everyone I came across was great, and I enjoyed the food as well — the meet on the sandwich seemed a little dry, but they gave you plenty of choices in BBQ sauce to add. I tried each of the BBQ sauces, all of which were great! Overall, a really great experience — will definitely be back next time I’m in Concordia!

They could be so great. Nice Atmosphere, Good Service, Good BBQ! But, Heavy’s has terrible — I mean awful sides. You go out to eat to get food better than you can make at home — Not worse. Even there potatoes are bad. Heavy’s please work on your sides!

Ok, I’ll bump this up a notch, due to the food this time around. Had the pulled pork bbq sandwhich, and this time the meat was moist and flavorful. I really enjoyed the food this time, as well as everyone I was with. They still need to work on thier service though– I realize we came in when it was a busy Saturday night here, but we stood at the front of the restaurant for at least 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us to take our names or let us know when we could be seated. The people behind us were rudely told to go next door to the brewery if they wanted to be seated, instead of politely giving them the option of waiting and being sat down in the dining room if they wanted.

I came with a large party and we were accommodated and welcomed, for a walk-in. Our waitress was extra friendly and provided us drinks, and was also cautious about not startling us, and warned us if she had something that spilled easily by telling us what side she was on(which I don’t think I’ve had a waitress do, which was nice). My grilled chicken was awesome and you can choose if you want your meat slopped with amazing spoonfuls of themed spices and cheeses. Unfortunately, their mac and cheese wasn’t the best(a defining factor of rating in most of my Unilocal reviews if you read them), but I give them props for it being homemade! The décor is very nice and surprises you as a restaurant in the downtown area. As someone who doesn’t live in Concordia, I will definitely be visiting when I am visiting my family once again!
