Spent the afternoon at the Birmingham Gun Club shooting trap. The club house and grounds are clean and neat. They have 9 trap fields and were using two fields for open shooting. This club throws only trap targets, no skeet or sporting clays. Very nice and friendly staff and members. I enjoyed this place and plan to return for some more practice in the future.

This place is great. 5 of my friends came here unannounced and they gave us a great tutorial. Pretty cheap and lots of fun. Planning on returning as soon as possible.

My inner hippie says«guns are bad, mmmkay.» I was anti-gun for 23 years of my life. Up until I had my forensic pathology lecture and witnessed some seriously mentally disturbing pictures that will assuredly make you hate humanity. That’s when I witnessed the awesome power of what a shotgun can do to a person. I assure you, it was disgusting as much as it was fascinating. Well, I come from a gun-toting family. My mother can bust ass with a 45-magnum, and my sister could probably make a career as a professional sniper. For the longest time, they thought I was adopted because I had absolutely no interest in guns. After school was over, I decided it was time. ITWASAWESOME. My axilla are bruised(both! learned that although I’m right handed, I’m a lefty shot). I had a teenager help me out since it was my first time. I Unilocaled my first shot(and not in the usual Unilocal-kinda way). Since I’m a girl and it was my first time, I got 2 boxes of shot free. Normally $ 3 a box. 100 shots = $ 30 = better way of spending 1.5 hours of entertainment than in the casino, and way more rewarding, I assure you. They will lend you the gun, ear protection, eye protection. Ask for David, the young lad who helped me out. This is an awesome experience to try out if you are new to it – an awesome bonding experience with your friends, spawn, or lover. ***CASHONLY**** Note: CALL them before you go to make sure they are open or will be open when you want to go!

I am not a gun person. I voted against Bush twice, for Obama, and I’m all for gun control. I don’t hunt, because I can’t really see myself killing an animal like a deer(though I’d like to try hunting Turkeys to be honest). So naturally it came as some surprise that I heartily enjoyed blasting away at clay pigeons. At first I was prepared not to shoot — it was a bit scary to be honest, having never even handled a gun before. When we arrived, I put away the notion and decided to borrow a gun from the club(free!). The guys running the place were very accommodating to our group, and made sure everyone knew how to be safe and had fun. Bonus: women get 2 free boxes of ammo. Trap shooting actually reminded me a bit of bowling or throwing darts in many ways, but no beer, obviously. The biggest surprise came when the clay pigeons started flying. I was actually hitting them! Shooting a clay makes a gratifying explosion of orange bits, and first timers are forgiven if they let out a war whoop now and then. It doesn’t hurt to have the Gun Club rep behind you, shouting things like«Great Shot!» and«Ya smoked it!» as in a classic video game.

I’m not a poker player and the thought of smoking a cigar makes me want to vomit so all of us were really getting creative when we were coming up with ideas for my bachelor party. Enter the Mancathalon. We planned an entire day’s worth of brocentric activities where we could just let loose and have a good time. After a drizzly morning spent on a boat fishing with little success, we had breakfast and headed out to the Birmingham Gun Club, which is open to the public. I have to say, the trap shooting event was the sleeper hit of the day. There were a hand full of guys in our group who had never fired a shotgun before or a gun of any sort for that matter and we all walked away talking about how much fun we had. My buddy Rob even made noise about purchasing a shotgun to return with. While the suggestion of returning with a firearm is generally a damning assessment, I think in this case its a strong indicator about how enjoyable this sport is. Everyone at the club was terribly nice and helpful every step of the way. We felt very welcome from the moment we got in the door. I believe it was Mike who helped us out with tips and instruction and he really seemed to be enjoying himself as much as we were. The low cost is refreshing as well. The club supplies ear plugs, eye protection, clay pigeons, and even loans out shotguns to shooters. To shoot 25 rounds it costs $ 6/person for non-members. The only other thing you need to buy is ammunition, which the club sells at a better rate than stores like Bass Pro Shops or Gander Mountain but if you’re not competing that day best cost-effective solution is to pick up a 100 pack at the local Walmart. Also, the club has great deals(first round’s free!) for women who want to shoot. If you think it might be a good time, I assure you that BGC will provide a great experience at a great rate. I’m moving out of state right after the wedding but if I had any free time to do so, I’d definitely be returning with the Mrs. to show her a good time. I’m almost sad to have found this gem so close to leaving but I’ll certainly be seeking out the closest possible imitation in my new city.
