There’s nothing like having an AC problem in the middle of summer to make you feel vulnerable to the many vultures that lay in wait for just such an occasion. All you can usually do is ask around to see if anyone has had any luck with a company — and of course look around on Unilocal for some advice. I found myself in just that predicament this summer. Just as the temps were nearing triple digits my AC decided it was done cooperating.
A friend suggested a company so I gave them a try. Long story (see previous review) short they pretty much sucked. They told me it was circling the drain after charging me a few hundred bucks for a new fan and some cleaning. They suggested I find someone to swap out the compressor, as it was on it’s last legs.
I remembered that there was a great company that worked on the commercial AC units at a place I used to work, they were always getting called in at the worst time to fix things and always found a way to get them going again. When I asked my old boss about them he said they also do residential work, and had in fact had just saved someone he knows a few grand by replacing a fuse instead of the whole enchilada. This is how I found Aable HVAC, best luck I had all year!
I met the repairman at my place and told him what the other guy had said. After he stopped laughing he suggested we try replacing the fan motor, which really should’ve been done in the first place. He also thought the unit needed balancing, and that being off balance was probably the main reason it was acting up. I wanted to make sure the compressor was OK before I forked out money again so he hooked up the gauges. Low and behold it was fine, not like new but far from failing. He wanted to match the motor so he took it and said he’d be back the next day. He even told me I didn’t need to be there, just leave the AC fan going inside the house and he’d take care of the rest from outside. I came home the next day to a very NICELY COOLED house, after a few weeks of smoldering temps it was SO GREAT to come home to that, you have no idea!
