Columbus Center For Human Services

The Career and Activities Center also associated with the Center for Human Services is a wonderful place that I have recently discovered hidden in an old warehouse building in between Georgesville rd and Sullivant.
CaAC is focused on helping groups like MRDD, the elderly and the disabled by letting them express themselves through art and other ventures.
From what I gathered during my visit, the groups that come in during the day create projects, sculptures, ceramics, paintings, murals, etc, which are then auctioned off, or sold to help raise money for expenses desperately needed by the MRDD, disabled, or elderly such as covering expenses for their medicine, rent, or whatever they need help with.
It’s a wonderful program and from the instructors I met, they were very kind and courteous, and most if not all have degrees, or studied in a background of therapy, or dealing with those with disabilities.
What is so nice about this facility is that they have decided to open their doors to the public for a few general classes.
I found myself here for a ceramics workshop, and I was incredibly impressed. I have taken numerous classes throughout the years at different places which were somewhat organized, but the teacher clearly had too many people to give great amounts of attention to the students. You really feel inspired here.
The facilities here for ceramics is awing to me. Everything is meticulously stored, labeled and greatly taken care of, but most of all, the gas kiln they have in house is AMAZING and much like ones seen in pottery production facilities. As a wannabe potter I was drooling at the site. I don’t even know if anyone else outside of large college campuses in Columbus has anything near it.
One word to describe this place, the people, the instruction, and the facility: AWESOME!
