From my experience, Buybacks offers some of the best prices in town for your used media. A stack of CDs that would only bring $ 20 at Half Price Crooks might land you $ 35 – 50 at Buybacks. They have a quick computerized system of finding the average resale selling price for whatever CD, DVD, or game you bring to them. And, they don’t try to screw you if there happens to be an extraordinarily valuable item among your lot. I, for instance, had no idea The Cows CD that’s been sitting unused on my shelves for years is bringing about $ 37 in the resale market. It must be rare or something. They gave me around $ 15 for it. Many other places would’ve passed it off as just another two or three buck item. The selection’s not bad at Buybacks, but it doesn’t compare very well to a place like Used Kids. The prices are in line with what you pay at most used media places. The help has always been helpful. But the four star rating is mainly for the fair prices they pay people for their music, games, and movies.

If it weren’t for Used Kids or Singing Dog, I’d like to think that Buyback’s would have more to offer in the way of music than everyone’s leftover Chumbawamba and Hanson CDs from middle school. Then again, maybe not. It’s clear that the focus here is mostly on used games and DVDs, which happens to be two things I have absolutely no interest in. With that being said, I’ve stilled browser the selection here plenty of times while waiting to get rang up for stacks of CDs I no longer needed, and I can’t say I was too impressed with any of it. I imagine the kind of person that stocks this store on a regular basis is the kind of consumer credit-strapped media junkie that absolutely has to own every game that comes out on every system ever, only to sell the chaff for more once something else comes along. If you have a nephew that’s been bugging you for a box full of Nintendo DS Sodoku games, you might be in luck here. If you’re looking for the latest Grand Theft Auto game, however, you’re probably SOL. If it’s actually in stock it will most likely cost you around $ 50 anyways, making your trip here a wash anyways. One thing they do have a ton of is porn. Lots and lots of used porn DVDs. This makes plenty of sense, seeing that the customer base at Buyback’s is a rag-tag collection of the more unsavory characters that amble up and down High St. every day on their way to nowhere in particular. How the people work here put up with pee-stained drifters trying to sell Kroger bags full of VHS tapes they found in the trash is a great mystery to me. I would have gone berserk a good two hours in to my shift if I got hired the time I applied to work here back when I was 20. With the exception of cheap classics like Fight Club or The Big Lebowski, this place is craptastic. Your inability to find a place to park while browsing this store’s goods is a blessing in disguise. Trust me on that one.

Out in the ‘burbs, Buybacks might get the job done. But on High Street, with its numerous used CD stores, Buybacks a little out of its league. When it comes to used CDs, Used Kids, Singing Dog, Johnny Go’s and Magnolia all have Buybacks beat. Several of those stores have reasonable used DVD selections as well. Buybacks suffers with prices as well. $ 9 for a used CD that I can pick up at Used Kids for $ 3? No thanks. The only area where Buybacks trumps them all is video games. Buybacks has a large selection of them, whereas the other stores don’t really have any at all. Still, a trip north on High will lead you to Play It Trade It, a store that beats Buybacks on price and selection of used games too. Buybacks on High St. might be worth a stop for a buried treasure, but that’s about it.

On occasion I’ll stop by at Buybacks when I’m walking along High Street, sometimes to see what they have in stock as far as DVDs are concerned or to make a few bucks when I’m short on cash. I don’t go to Buybacks for CDs, because in this digital age blah blah blah downloading. But DVDs, specifically box sets from TV shows, are what I’m after. And the occasional video game. Buybacks has me covered on this front. Recently I inquired about their buying procedure because I noticed a DVD of an animé going for $ 135 on their top shelf. The helpful employee informed me that their buying price is calculated up to the minute based on current Amazon prices, the price and availability in their other stores, and the rarity of the item. Neat! I’m sure someone who is smarter than me with more time on their hands could find a way to exploit this system. In conclusion, I have no qualms about doing business at Buybacks!

Sorry, but no. Sitting on the site of the old CD/Record Exchange which«buybacks» bought out, this store is a soul-less corporate entity with high prices, small(and pop-predominant) selection, and nothing original at all when compared to Singing Dog, Johnny Go, or the fantastic Used Kids. Two stars simply because I once found an original Pete Towsend«Lifehouse» poster here. Otherwise, the absolute LAST stop on the Highstreet Music tour.

Buybacks Entertainment is a little store on High Street that buys and sells used DVDs, CDs, video games and video game consoles– sort of like a media pawn shop. The beauty of this place is two fold: for one thing, they buy almost anything on a disc; for another, they pay way more for your junk than, say, Gamestop. Because of the nature of the business, there can be some really surprising finds on the racks. It’s like the back room of some forgotten video store in Woonsocket, Rhode Island exploded and rained all its weirdest shit on the campus of the Ohio State University. Cosmic weirdness! The last time I was in Buybacks I had the good fortune of reading the box for a series of what I assume– or hope– was a straight-to-video program called Bibleman, which is basically exactly why it sounds like: awesome. The staff at the store are always super friendly and helpful, and they tend to have good taste in things, which is always nice. Plus, they pay my bills sometimes! Thanks, Buybacks!
