Really fortunate to have this great local chocolatier in the C-ville area! The buckeye gift boxes make great Ohio-themed gifts, especially while traveling. Took some on a recent trip to Europe, and people loved the quality and taste of the product.

What is wrong with Anthony Thomas Candy shops? They sell different candies at different prices, but God forbid you should buy them that way; their stated policy is that in that situation they will charge you the highest price for EVERYTHING you buy. So go ahead, try to buy some $ 15/lb Buckeyes and some $ 20/lb almond bark. Watch what happens. They dump it all on the scale at once and charge $ 20/lb for everything. Imagine going to the grocery store and asking the meat counter for some pork chops, some ground beef, and some New York strip steaks – and they dump it all on the scale at once and charge you the strip steak price for all of it. That would be utterly insane, and it’s no less insane with Anthony Thomas candies. I guess it’s Anthony Thomas’s privilege to do business in such an insane manner, but it’s also my privilege never to buy from them. John Eagle Candies and the Colonial Candy Shop(Ben Heggy candies, yum) are right down the street. And Ben Heggy chocolates taste better AND are only $ 15/lb. Competition is good, especially in the context of such pricing lunacy as Anthony Thomas.

This store is ready for Easter! Bagged Easter candy filled the shelves closest to the entrance. I bought a bag of chocolate malted eggs and spiced jelly beans. I never made it past the first shelf of Easter candy. Overall the store was spotless and everything seemed well stocked. I’ll return to get some of the year-round candy and will update my review then.

I grew up with Nectar Candyland in Delaware, and that chocolate was the magic of our childhood from every Christmas and Easter for my sisters and cousins, our entire extended family as we always got together at our grandmother’s house on holidays. We were devastated when it went out of business. As a chocolate connoisseur I’ve had chocolate from around the world, Swiss, Belgium, Iceland, etc. and nothing compared to the homemade Nectar chocolate. The discovery that Nectar has a brother named Anthony Thomas, was the happiest news I’ve heard in a long time. My sisters and I were overjoyed when my mom went a bit crazy buying everything at Anthony Thomas for this past Easter with all our favorites. The magic is back! And I have a new favorite, chocolate malt balls. I just hope they ship to California!

I stop in here once in a while to get some of the pink buttercream mints. Yum. Whoever is working is always friendly and offers me almost more samples than I can handle. Maybe they have psychic abilities and know how much I love candy. Hmmmmmm. I usually don’t buy a large amount of candy when I come here, so I like that they already have trios of different chocolates and candies in plastic wrap ready to go(all pretty cheap). The chocolate covered cherries are tasty, and the maple creams are loved by my whole family. The option to get candy boxed up to give as gifts is great as well, you can mix and match and the boxes are really cute. This Anthony Thomas shop is located across the street from Graceland Shopping Center, making it close by to… basically everything.

Every time I go to this Anthony Thomas, I expect to find it shut down. In fact, that goes for every store in this little strip center, which along with a few empty storefronts has a nondescript café and a percussion store. Not exactly the kind of businesses you expect to thrive in this economy. Alas, the very nice lady working by herself at AT tonight said business is booming, and they’re already working to get ready for the Christmas rush. Plus, she gave me two free samples, even though I was only buying $ 1.80 worth of chocolate. I like buying gifts here because it seems more personal than a packaged, wrapped box of chocolates that are always the same. You can buy a tin here and create a mix from dozens of varieties based on what you know about the recipient. FYI, if anyone ever wants to buy a customized box of chocolates for me, I really like the marshmallows, graham crackers, pecan bark and mint meltaways. All dark chocolate, of course. Yeah, it’s kind of expensive. That $ 1.80 I spent? That bought two marshmallows. Who cares? It’s not like milk or eggs that you need to buy all the time. It’s a special treat, and I’m OK with paying a little extra for a special treat as long as it tastes great. And Anthony Thomas has never let me down.

I’m starting to catch on to the overall business model of the city of Columbus– local franchises as far as the eye can see! Cup O Joe, Cameron Mitchell, Jeni’s, Global Gallery… they’re everywhere! For better or worse, local candy giant Anthony Thomas is one of them. Regardless of whether or not you’ve been in one of their many retail stores, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ve had a piece of candy or two from this classic candy company. Given their Columbus roots, they’ve been deemed the official maker of licensed«Buckeye» candies, an Ohio delicacy of peanut-butter and chocolate that has a kryptonite-like effect on many Ohioans and devout OSU fans such as myself. Although the pre-packaged Anthony Thomas variety tastes a bit processed than the standard home made versions most people in this great midwestern state are used to, it’s rich and creamy enough that you’ll forget it came in a plastic wrapper within seconds. It’s damn good. As for the other goods offered by Anthony Thomas, all i can say is «Meh.» The different chocolate butter creams, like the raspberry milk chocolate, for example, are enticing, but the prices are a bit rich for my taste. We’re only talking dollars and cents here, but being the junk food junkie that I am, I can name at least three other chocolate shops within five miles that are half the price and twice as good. You probably passed Colonial Candy in Clintonville on the way here, and I must say that you’re a fool if you’ve never been there. Anthony Thomas isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination– it’s candy, after all– but Colonial has them beat in every way possible, save square footage. So get a box of Buckeyes, get back in your car, and keep movin’.
