Oscar 22(Columbia) is my absolute favorite municipality airport to fly-in to. Located just 52 nautical miles(30 minutes) from Tracy, it’s a fast day trip to make. The airports runway and grounds are well kept and the staff at both the FBO and restaurant have been friendly and helpful each time I’ve gone. Once you’re on the ground, a short walk on a nature trail will lead you to the historical gold rush mining town at Columbia State Park. There, you will find places to eat and shop and if you bring young children(or maybe old ones), they’ll have a blast panning for gold. Make sure you try the home-made ice cream and the town’s home brewed root beer. Before you depart the airport, make sure to check your weights & balances and the weather. The density altitude leaving could be hazardous to your health.

We landed at this quaint airport with one paved runway and a bonus grass strip. We chose the paved one of course. We experienced a harrowing crosswind as we landed, but the runway was in great condition to receive us. The tiny airport terminal had a community touch, and a nature trail connects the airport to the gold rush ghost town of Columbia. What a treat! Airports are often cast out into the suburbs or rural areas, making any sightseeing very difficult unless someone is generous enough to chauffeur visiting pilots around the area. I will definitely visit the airport and the ghost town again.

Flew in here on Saturday night to have dinner at Goldstreet. Very quiet on a Saturday at 7pm, but well lit and organized. We landed on the tarmac, not the grass. I can imagine it being a great spot to hit during the summer for an afternoon away from the bay. Highly suggest you get your pilot’s license before checking out the facility.
