6235 Apartment on Southwood

I lived there for 2 years. In the mean time, there were lots of incidents happened in the building. Burglary into my apartment, some weird sex offender trying to break into my neighbor’s unit.

the unit/​building I was in, has a few fundamental problems:
1) Big cracks on the ceiling:
Since it was built in 1924, the ceiling is slightly bent down with a larger crack without a gap. It looked like the gap was filled with multiple painting jobs. Now that I read a few previous Unilocal reviews on apartments on Southwood ave, I understand it was a warning sign for what happened to the previous reviewer in the bathroom in other building. Luckily it did not fall down while living there but it is just a matter of time.
2) Slanted wood flooring
Again, it FEELS like the building is in the process of collapsing. The wooden floor in the living room, dining room, and the bed room with french door were seriously slanted/​sinked toward the middle. you can easily tell by looking at the alignment of furniture and the wall.
3) Worst management (Stlrental service)
Mimi M. was the one who showed us the complex and the name signed on the lease contract, but whenever we need her for fixing stuff and then feel irritated by taking longer than usual, she always says «I am just a real estate agent and will talk to the landlord to figure things out.» It usually takes 1 – 2 weeks to get things fixed. When we calling the landlord, Bobby, he never answers… He just runs Slavin Runyan Homes and takes monthly checks under him.
Burglary was the first time in my whole life and it was also the first time living in the building without a security entering system at the main entrance. Meaning, everyone can enter into the building both from the front or back without being noticed.
In fact, I have seen a few suspicious guys passing through different buildings on Southwood. and finally right before the Christmas, someone broke into our apartment only within 2-​hour window from 6:30 to 8:30pm after dinner. I was seriously worried if someone was watching us out the entire time or someone has a key because I always double checks.
The last issue we had with the management was the return of deposit check.
We were totally fooled by their strategies during the two and half months after our move out.
According to the law, the landlord has to return the deposit check within 30 days with a detailed explanation if there is any problem. However, as expected they asked us to wait and wait and will talk to the landlord… blah blah… and finally took that long to get our deposit back in full. When we finally got to talk to the landlord for the first time in two years, BOBBY, he said he already sent us the check, which turned out to be a flat lie. And here was what Mimi got back to us with afterward:
«On the lease contract, STLRentalService has a right to return our deposit within 90 days.»
It also turned out to be a total lie because there was no single line written on our contract.
Anyway, we are finally done with this building with a security deposit in full, but hope this helps your decision of apartment hunting.
