Stop here for a crash course in all things blues. And while you’re at it, talk to the owner for his take on places to eat and all the music going down that night. You won’t regret following his advice.

Cat Head is a must-stop, if not your first stop, when in Clarksdale and looking to learn more about the blues. Roger Stolle, the owner, is one of the people behind Clarksdale’s reincarnation as the blues capitol. He has organized festivals in the past, and he has an excellent collection of blues-themed artwork, music, and books for sale. He will also share his stories for free. If you’re new to the blues music scene, then come visit Cat Head to learn something, or many things as I did, about the Delta blues. Roger will also recommend places and people to talk to, and he can also tell you who is playing where that night and perhaps every night. On my visit, I even met a blues artist from Texas that had stopped by to sell her new CDs. She stopped and chatted with us. When she left, Roger told us all about her and we had our first blues music celebrity sighting in Clarksdale.

If you’re traveling the Blues Trail, you HAVE to stop here. The owner is a great source of knowledge for all things local and helps spearhead the local film festival. He carries hard to find and out of print music from people you’ve never even heard of. Even of you are a die hard! This place sells art and prints from local artists as well as knick-knacks and kitsch. We had a blast just peeking through every cranny crammed with goodies. I’m happy to say I didn’t leave empty handed and now own that copy of Hellhound on my Trail we couldn’t find at home.

More than just an excellent cd shop, it’s THE place to go for info on whatever live music is going on in Clarksdale. As for music, Roger behind the counter was as knowledgeable as you could hope for. Name a bluesman, and he’ll go through the various differences in recordings(quality, where it falls in the artist’s career), give you a little history of the artist, name other people that he played with, and make recommendations. Better than the independent record shop I used to go to as a kid, and that’s saying something!

This stretch of Clarksdale has a really cool vibe to it. And Cat Head is one of the reasons. The store has music and art, which is about all you need in Clarksdale.
