This is a 3.5 star review, but I can’t go 4. I had lunch at George’s on a Thursday around 12:30. It was over half full, but there were plenty of places to sit. The dining room is deceivingly large, when you see the tiny parking lot(which was full) and the front of the building you may think it’s a tiny joint. Not the case. Inside, it wasn’t the newest place, but it’s clean and cool. You order at the counter. There are a ton of desserts on top of the counter, seriously, it was covered. The menu is large, but fairly self explanatory. They’ve got all the BBQ usual suspects, but nothing fried. So, no french fries, onion rings, or(sadly) okra. I went with a 3 meat combo, opting for ribs, a hot link, and dark meat chicken. I liked the choice of dark or white meat, most places just give you whatever they’ve got next in line. I went with beans and mac n cheese on the side at the recommendation of the woman taking my order. It took maybe 2 minutes to put my food together. The meal was handed off to me by a very friendly guy who asks if you want peppers, pickles, or onions. All 3 please. You also get your choice of white or wheat bread, which comes in the form of 2 slices from a typical loaf of bread from the supermarket. I first tried the beans. At first they were too sweet, not cloyingly so, but too sweet. After a couple more bites however, I liked them. They were very good when I added onions and jalapenos. Some more spice and these things could really be something. Very, very mild. The macaroni and cheese was a disappointment. It was sufficiently creamy, but that was about it. Very bland, and the pasta was cooked too long. It had no bite left. I didn’t eat more than a couple of bites of this. Of the meats, my preference was: ribs, chicken, hot links. Of the 3 ribs, 1 was fantastic, 1 was above average, and 1 was below average. The fantastic rib had all the classic rib signs: smoke flavor, a strong rub, a slight pull from the bone, but ultimately it was tender. Very juicy. If all of the ribs I got were like this, I would give George’s 4 stars. But, each rib was worst than the last. The second rib was not as tender and juicy as the first. But, everything else was present. The third rib was clearly the last one on the rack. There was very little meat, really not even a full bite. I probably should have returned it for a replacement, but I had more than enough food anyway and didn’t want another one. But, it should not have been served, it should have been thrown away, there was that little meat on the bone. The chicken was also a Jekyll and Hyde situation. You get a nice quarter piece of chicken, it’s large. The drumstick was too dry, but the thigh portion was juicier. Both had a crispy crust, but it lost it’s juiciness at the surface of the meat. It was either smoked too long or sat too long I think. There is nice smoke flavor there, and it went well with the hot BBQ sauce. But, overall, it was not a great piece of chicken. The hot link is not your typical bright red link, which I liked. Too many places serve the same thing when it comes to hot links. George’s has actual pepper flakes you can see. It doesn’t have the snap that other links have, but that wasn’t a huge deal to me. This was dried out, which leads me to believe it too sat too long under the lights. It had good flavor, but could have been hotter given it was a hot link. Every employee I came in contact with was beyond friendly. They were laughing and talking with people the entire time I was there. I think every other customer was a regular that knew at least one employee. It was really a fun place to be, great atmosphere. Parking isn’t great, so you might have to walk a bit. I parked in the lot of the strip mall next door. But, they take credit cards, which is nice. I can see that if I catch George’s on the right day it can really be good. I think I got some items that were just a little too old, or smoked a little too long.

I’m pretty sure that the rib ends with double collard greens might be in my «Top 5» list for a last meal on this planet. Seriously. Debra, the owner, is sweet and engaging — a real gem. Go in for lunch or early supper expecting long lines.(Yes, the secret’s out.) One of my favorite eateries in central Oklahoma — you bet.

George’s is tucked away on Culbertson Drive, not far from the capitol. I’m not sure how I’ve worked near it for so long without the amazing smell of BBQ drawing me in like a siren song. The location is easy to miss but the flavor isn’t: Everything that my large group had looked, smelled and from what I could see, tasted amazing. I had the chicken with bread and potato salad and ate every bite. The sauce was flavorful without being overpowering and enhanced the taste of the meat. My only notes(not really complaints) are that the menu is really beef heavy, I didn’t see any pork but that’s just my preference and everyone was really happy with the brisket. There is also no beer, which is a prerequisite for my husband at a BBQ joint, but I’m told the takeaway/catering still tastes as delicious as it does in the restaurant, so I’m sure I can twist his arm to pick it up on the way home from work sometime. The staff were so friendly and fast, making this a perfect spot to make yourself at home and enjoy!

Very good«q» joint. The chopped brisket and Riblet sandwiches were a hit. The tea was good too-an important aspect when eating smoked meat.

I just love this place. The people here are so friendly and genuine. They really make you feel like the most important number one customer in the world, even though it’s obvious there are many customers that come through all day long! It smells so good. I am a fan of the Bologna, smoked chicken, and ribs. The portions are huge and the sides are amazing. The sides are made fresh and they are always cooking more to refill the line. Mac and cheese, greens… so good! I just don’t come across many places around here where the owner is out working the line and they take the time to know you by name. I wish there were more restaurants like this in our area that build up a sense of community.

This place has potential to be amazing! I was super pumped about the place, great atmosphere. But it was a 3 step disappointment; Got a Rib sandwich, they literally tossed 4 ribs in a box with two slices of wonder bread on top. I had to de bone the ribs then make the sand which myself. Mac and cheese was watered down Kraft. And the apple pie was disappointing. Maybe step it up and this place would be hoppin’

My Dad said that the ribs were the most tender he’d ever had, and that the coleslaw was delicious. I had the smoked bologna sandwich, which was excellent! I’m not usually a fan of mayo based potato salad, but their’s is wonderful! A hidden gem that I’d recommend to anyone!

The chicken was insanely good. «Dark meat». The sausage was also good. The Mac and cheese and greens were above average. The rib tips need work as does the brisket(no bark). I loved the front counter people as they were smiling, Chatty and quick. Clean restaurant, reasonable prices. I like Leos and Bedlam better.

I’ve lived down the street for almost 3 years and have only recently discovered this place! It’s a nice little hole in the wall joint with really legit bbq. I had the rib tip sandwich special and pulled pork plate togo… the rib tip sandwich was massive and overflowing with meat! The meat could be a little more tender, but it had nice flavor and smokiness. The pulled pork, though, was super moist and tender… definitely my favorite of the two. I went through about half of the food and packed the rest for lunch, all for about 11 dollars! Good bbq at a very good value, I highly recommend it.

Tried this for the 1st time today and was pleasantly surprised. The smell as you’re walking towards the building is amazing. You walk in and it’s an older building, nothing fancy at all but it is very clean. The service wasn’t the fastest but it was ok. VERY friendly staff. Served my chicken quarter, potato salad and 2 slices of bread on a paper plate. The chicken was quite good. The potato salad was more like mashed potatoes with egg, mustard etc. put in. Not bad but not what I’m used to. A friend had polish sausage and ribs. he said the ribs were very good. over all a good lunch experience. We’ll be back.

Quality BBQ at a great price! We had ribs, chicken, hot links, and bologna. Sides included potato salad, mixed greens, baked beans, and mac n cheese. Everything was good although nothing really shined. The ribs could have been better as they were a lil chewy. I don’t like my ribs falling off the bone tender, but these were just a lil bit too tough. All in all I’d go back for a good cheap lunch. You can get stuffed here for less than a ten spot, with dessert!

Smoke. Delicious barbecue smoke. That is what hits you as soon as you walk in the door here. It’s exactly what you want to be greeted by. Warning, you will pick some of it up on your clothes, but I look at it as a bonus. I travel a lot for work and eat BBQ in about every city. Previous to this trip the closest I’ve had to OKCBBQ is Oklahoma Joes, which is in KC and really has nothing to do with OK. However, it is the benchmark I use to judge all other barbecue. I walked in and was the only one in line. I didn’t see right away that you order on the left side of the counter, but it didn’t take me too long to realize. I ordered the dinner, for lunch, with the rib ends and brisket. I got Mac and cheese and potato salad with it. The food is served at the counter and very quickly. I started with the rib ends– oh man they were delicious. The smoke flavor really shined and the meat was incredibly tender. Was great even without sauce. Then, the brisket. Now, I am a big brisket fan but it is hard to find in a lot of the country. This brisket was not TX worthy. It wasn’t bad, it had a little bit of a smoke ring, but was a bit dry. Not too bad with sauce on it though. The Mac was fairly standard, a little on the sloppy side and kinda bland but hey it’s Mac and cheese. The potato salad was good, but heavy on the relish, and I am not a relish fan. The next day I came back and tried the ribs. They were excellent, but I actually preferred the ends which held more flavor. Also, the service was very friendly and felt like southern hospitality. In all, I’d give this 4.5 stars. Need to step up the brisket game a little, but a very satisfying experience at a great price. Also, they have strawberry soda on tap.

Upon arriving at this place I was greeted with a smell of smoke in the air. This is what I hope to smell when going into a bbq joint. I stepped up to the counter and ordered a half pound of brisket and a half pound of ribs. I ordered the brisket half and half lean. Like everybody does in this area they looked at me funny. I tried to explain and eventually ended up with half a pound of moist voice brisket. Well that’s what they call the meat they offer up as brisket. The ribs ended up being really good. And by really good I mean top 2 or 3 in the Oklahoma City area. The ribs were good 7 to 8 ouf of ten quality. I could ask for a little bit more smoke on my ribs but I can’t complain here. The flavor was good. And the meat pealed off the bone, like it should. If I would have just just eatin ribs at this place this place for the received four stars. That is also the reason I still leave it at a 3-star place. Next up is what they call brisket. The brisket had no smoke ring, no bark on it, have no real brisket taste, and really was one of the worst brisket that I’ve ever had. So my recommendation STAYAWAYFROMTHEBRISKET here. The only side that I tasted was the baked beans. It was a job nothing special but good. Pulled pork in the beans I am pretty sure. I kinda like that aspect. I can see myself going back to this place. But I will steer far away from what they call brisket. I will definitely order the ribs and next time try the rib ends or the chicken.

It kind of hurts me to write this, but… I found this place on Unilocal, bookmarked it, and then a few days later my friend and I headed here for lunch. As we pulled into the parking lot my friend and I were both excited to try it(he even said, ‘glad you found this place!’). You could smell the great wood smoke, and the place was not run down but exactly what you want to see in a locally owned BBQ shop(you know what I mean… not ‘fancy!’). We walked in eager to put some meat where it belonged! And then, meh(in a good way cause it’s meat… and that’s never bad!)… The ribs were good, the brisket was bland(and dry), the greens were GREAT!, the potato salad was too ‘smooth,’ and the service was fine. The sauces were ok, but I’m sad to say I doubt I go back when I have options like Bedlam and Leo’s. Just my $ 0.02.

I had not eaten here in years and in fact, forgot the only time I had been here when I was taken by a friend who worked in State Government. This place is a treat… especially if you are a meat lover! The ribs are big, tender and smoked flavor is readily tasted. Brisket portions were very generous. Sauce has a little bite to it that lasts and that you can feel the more you eat. Meat doesn’t require sauce; it’s flavorful without but I’m a sauce guy so appreciate it. Folks are friendly. While legislature is in session you might be surprised at who you see eating there at lunch. Busy at lunch. Located between Medical Center complex and State Capitol complex. Sides are nothing to write home to momma about but they were ok. Baked beans had small bits of pulled pork in them. Green beans pretty ordinary but desserts/cobblers are pretty good. Self service place and very, very reasonably priced. They have daily specials which know a sizeable amount off their regular prices and their regular prices are quite good for the amount of food they give. One secret: Ask for cornbread instead of the white bread slices normally served with the food. IF you can locate some butter, it’s much better than the storebought plain whitebread. Try this place! You will NOT be disappointed if you are a barbecue lover. It’s definitely not a «high fashioned» place but I wouldn’t quite call it a «hole in the wall» either as to décor.

This is an excellent lunch spot, and not only because I can walk to it from work without breaking a sweat. Compared to other quick BBQ spots, such as Bedlam, Happy Hog is cheaper, cleaner, better lit, more inviting, and less crowded. I like the chicken options because they leave me less food coma-y afterward so I got the chicken plate(with dark meat), which came with 1 side(mixed greens, green beans, coleslaw, baked beans, mac & cheese)), bread(corn, wheat, or white), and a drink for about $ 6.00. You can also pick up a slice of freshly baked peach cobbler and blackberry pie, among other delicious baked items. The food is made with so much love you can feel it. When I asked the cashier how the mixed greens were made, she explained that she combined wild greens, collard greens, and mustard greens with some turkey and spices, and that it should be really tasty. And it was just that: tasty.

The place has authenticity in spades. They even have fly paper hanging by the rest room. The staff is real friendly, even jovial. But the brisket and the ribs were dry. The sausage was good. The sauces were fair. The Mac and cheese noodles way over done. Was it a bad day or doesnt anyone here know how to BBQ?

I’ve tried the chickwich sandwich and liked it a lot, especially with the hot sauce. That sauce was spicy! I had to take a break and switched to the mild for a bit but I liked it! The red bottle is spicy and the white one is mild. The chicken was seasoned well and not at all dry. I was disappointed fries weren’t available but the menu did say nothing is fried here. I thought prices were cheap. I got a lot of food plus a drink and only paid around $ 6. Employees were really nice. A couple of them came by and checked on me several times. I can see myself coming back for lunch when the mood for BBQ strikes since it’s only a three minute drive from work. George’s is located in an older residential neighborhood so traffic is not a problem.
