The founders of Dairy Queen introduced a new kind of dessert treat and, in the process, developed a foundation of the franchising industry. The history of DQ started more than 70 years ago, with the 10-cent sale of a then unnamed product on August 4, 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois. A father and son partnership in Green River, Illinois, had been experimenting with a soft frozen dairy product for some time. They contacted Sherb Noble, a good friend and customer, who agreed to run the«all you can eat» trial sale at his walk-in ice cream store. Within two hours, he dished out more than 1,600 servings of the new dessert. Today, DQ has more than 6,000 restaurants throughout the country. This is the new location, on Route 11 in North Syracuse. It’s a Grill and Chill, meaning they have food in addition to ice cream. I stopped in today, as it was customer appreciation day, meaning everything on the menu was half off. Restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. The menu has plenty of things to choose from. Employees are very friendly. I ordered a Flamethrower burger combo with fries. If you’re eating in, they give you a number to place on your table and they bring the food to you as most of it is cooked fresh when you order. Food was very good. The fries were good, but nothing special. Better than McDonald’s and Burger King though, in my opinion. The burger was great. Best fast food burger I’ve had. It was huge, topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon and spicy Flamethrower sauce. The sauce on it was awesome. Spicy with a touch of heat, but flavorful. They also have a large refrigerated case in the restaurant holding their restaurant-made cakes and ice creams. Also makes for something nice to look at. Good addition to the CNY area, will definitely go back.

In Syracuse you don’t normally look forward to blizzards, unless you are heading to DQ! Oh my pumpkin pie! So far my favorite, but so many more to try. Service is quick and accurate. Typical burger joint, but the fish sandwich is crispy and beats the competition for flavor. Good fast food with $ 5 lunch deals that include ice cream or, for a small upcharge, a Blizzard!
