This is definitely the spot for all of the Chico State student. We picked up several poster boards and some large cardstock items. The very nice girl working there was very uninformed about what they had though. It was a struggle to find the vellum paper we were looking for, only to discover we had to go elsewhere. The shop is quite large and allows you to meander back to several rooms. Its a great resource for locals.

My wife and I were visiting Chico to see if we might want to move there from the Bay area. We were excited to stroll down the street and come upon an art store since we both paint. The lady at the counter only had a few words to greet us: «I’m closing in ten minutes.» Clearly she wanted to go home. Hopefully she thought about her greeting to us but I suspect not. Unfortunately it seems this may be the only game in town that isn’t a corporate store. I will say that an apparent homeless person was just walking out of the store prior to us walking in but either way we were treated like an inconvenience. If this was the owner at the register, I it may be time to retire.

1. The stuff they sell is high quality and will meet the needs of almost any art class you can take at Chico State. Sometimes they have sales on their paint, which makes it even cheaper than Michael’s. 2. Over the summer, I went in as a rep for my job asking if they were interested in having an intern for the summer. The woman at the counter asked me to leave right away because offering an intern was the same to her as threatening her job. Essentially, she believed that if she told her boss that I was offering free help, she would be fired. The whole conversation was really weird and… off-putting. Since then I have gone in just to shop for supplies and the lady totally recognizes me and gives me weird looks like she wants me out of there. Way to make a customer feel unwelcome, lady. In conclusion, I now shop at Michael’s.

They have the stuff you need for painting — but if you want a good price you’re better off shopping around. Cramped inside and last time I went there, stifling hot. Most times I’m there the staff are chatting to each other and not engaging with customers. Maybe they could spend the time reorganizing because it’s not that easy to find things. Overall it’s OK — they have stuff & the prices aren’t heart attack outrageous.

Ellis is a great source art supplies. It can be a little pricey, but I like it because it’s local and they have a great knowledge of art. Sure, you can go to Michaels and get cheaper things, but you also wont get the same amount of care and help. The employees at Ellis really know what they are talking about and are excited to help you find new ways to make art. They don’t make you feel stupid if you don’t know something, they are more than willing to tell you all about it so you can become an expert too! Ellis is awesome! :)

Ellis has a lot of art and craft supplies that you won’t likely find at Michael’s or Joanns and their close to campus location can’t be beat if you’re a student at CSUC. The staff tends to wonderfully nice and helpful but sometimes you might have to seek them out as they might be in the back office. The staff also knows a lot about crafting and art so if you have questions they could probably help you out. Ellis suffers in its prices and sometimes selection. While they house products that are a bit more obscure, they often don’t have some of the more obvious choice items. You also pay for convenience here, their prices aren’t cheap. But if you want to go to a place where the staff is passionate about art and knows what they’re talking about, look no further.

This place is amazing! They offer student discount on top of their low prices. The girl that helped me asked which professor I had so she could help me get the exact supplies that professor required. Right next to CSU Chico, great place don’t even bother going anywhere else.

The employees are helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. They’re prices aren’t that bad, definitely not bad enough to make you want to jump into the fluorescent corporate buzz of Michael’s(unless you’re looking for something really specific). The only thing that bothers me is is that they are closed on Sunday(it’s Sunday as I write this…)

Ellis is where I send all my art students. Their friendly knowledgeable staff are always ready to help. Their prices are good. And if they don’t have a product you need, they will order it for you. Now that is good service!!!

This is where every art major goes to stock up on supplies for class, before class, during class, after class and at the last minute you can tell newbies from oldies cause they’re checking off every item on the class supply list. The beginning of semesters were the best when you get the art buck$ for every dollar you spend you get a certain amount or something… except it always sucked when I inevitably lost and later found stuffed into the back of my locker. The staff is always has the best intentions but is sometimes flighty. You can really find everything here you’d ever need.

This store has any art supplies you could ever want, way better than Michael’s, and a really helpful staff. They also give a nice discount to students, and they are right near campus with an adjacent parking lot. They have all kinds of paints, pens, canvases, easels, paper, drafting supplies, and even art materials for kids. Visiting the store is a lot of fun.
