Talk about a «hidden gem»! I never give 5 stars on a review, but the quality, freshness, portion size of the sashimi appetizer blew me away. We then had several rolls that were equally Delicious. Congratulations on a no frills, but very modern and lovely atmosphere as well. It all adds up to a wonderful find as good as anywhere I have had sushi(and we are crazy for it) Susan S

Charmingly intimate and clean space, quality food, and courteous service. Also, being reasonably priced and BYO makes this somewhere worth coming back to for date night that doesn’t break the bank.

Five stars is hard to dish out but this little place is WOW in quality, customer service, and cleanliness! I’ll include a couple of pics of what I enjoyed but something tells me you can do no wrong here. The tako(octopus) was perfect, as was the unagi(eel). The miso soup was also a surprise with how filling it was. Small place with no street appeal but once you enter you’re likely to return. I know I will!

This is one of the best/freshest places for sushi in Chicago, particularly at the price point.(Very reasonable). The rolls are simple(not overly glopped up like many other places out there) and you can taste the quality of the fish in their pieces of nigiri. BYOB helps make this place even more reasonable. Don’t skip on their mochi dessert… YUM! Atmosphere is cozy and intimate and I would recommend making reservations, as it can get busy. Service is good and the servers are always very nice.(One time we did have to wait about 15 – 20 minutes even though we made reservations and they showered us with free food to make up with it… totally ok with that, as we were not in a rush!)

This was one of the better places I’ve been. it was the prefect price to sushi ratio as you get great quality for the the price. menu is purely on sushi so they put all their effort in providing a great sushi product and not stray away with other foods. it was an incredible find. definite visit repeat.

Absolutely amazing. Do not miss this spot. Head chef is amazingly nice and generous. Handled a same day party of 12 with grace and class. Made sure we enjoyed every bite.

Love the freshness of all the sushi… sushi dinner plate is so good. I love the seaweed salad, it’s the best I ever had.

One of the best places for sushi in terms of both quality and price! It’s a small restaurant in Edgewater and I would’ve thought it was super busy, but we came on Saturday night about half an hour to closing and there was only one other party. The sashimi is perfectly sliced into nice thick pieces that just make your mouth water. We were started off with a small octopus salad taster on the house. The sashimi appetizer was awesome, but there is overlap of the fish if you decide to get the Sushi Combo B or Taketei Combo as your main meal. Personally still think it’s worth it. I can never get enough hamachi(yellowtail)! A word of warning: The nigiri pieces for the most part all have some wasabi tucked between the fish and the rice, so be careful if you have sensitive nostrils! The staff were also extremely friendly. Our waiter didn’t have very fluid English but was able to answer all our questions.

My favorite sushi restaurant by far! My boyfriend and I have been going here for two years and have never been disappointed. The owner is extremely friendly and the fish is fresh and delicious. Will definitely be going back again and again!

Taketei is open again with the same owners and is just as good as ever. The best sushi in Chicago without spending $ 100+ per person. If you like thick pieces of delicious raw fish without cream cheese, BBQ sauce, fluff fluff bullsh*t, then go here.

They did close for a while but reopened tonight(1⁄29). Still just as delicious. Still highly recommended! It was nice to see people from the neighborhood come in and welcome the chef back… a lot of us missed this place!

Most delicious, freshest sushi in the city! My husband and I have eaten a lot of sushi in our day and Taketei is one of the best we’ve tried. We’ve been frequenting the restaurant for the past ~2 years and go there pretty often(2−3x/month). The staff is great – they put so much care into their creations, have exceptional quality fish… and treat you like family. We haven’t tried a dish we didn’t like. Our favs: Sushi B, scallop nigiri, spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, and shrimp tempura roll. It’s also nice that it’s byob. We’re so glad you’re back after a brief hiatus, Taketei! We missed you!

The wife and I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while — I’m not exactly sure how long it has been here. The sushi was delicious from my American perspective and the service was excellent. This is a small restaurant — 4 tables — but there was no wait when we showed up at 8:00 — 8:30 on a Saturday. We ordered too much food, but, after struggling, we ate it all. Next time, I’ll order less, but it all looked really good. I can’t remember all that we ordered. The super white tuna was awesome. The wife ordered three types of tuna and liked it all. I had one of the massive rolls that has 4 massive pieces instead of the usual petite six. If it had been six pieces, it would have killed me. We had the shrimp tempura roll as well and enjoyed it. Spicy tuna roll was also good. You’re fine ordering anything on the menu.

Great place! Not only is it BYOB, but the quality of the sushi was pretty good considering the lack of good quality sashimi in the city. Came here with some friends on a Thursday at around 6 and we were only one of two tables there at the time… it became a lot busier as the night went on. I presume it would be difficult to get a table on a weekend considering how small the place is with only a few tables. As a result, be sure to make reservations! I had the sushi and sashimi combo that came with miso. It was around $ 25, so typical I would say of what I ordered and the quantity. I would come back for sure for future visits.

Very fresh, great service and reasonably priced sushi joint in uptown/edgewater. It is also byob. I like to start with their sushami appetizer and move to a few rolls. The dragon and rainbow rolls never fail to impress.

Super small but great sushi shop. Total of 5 tables, mostly 2 tops. Very easy to miss but very cute. The service was slow considering we were the only ones in there but it appears to have a large take-out business. The place is also BYOB with a Jewel across the street for your booze purchase. Also, the meters in front of the store stop at 6:00 so you can park for free! My only gripe is one roll was cut so large it was like trying to eat a hockey puck. A little smaller please!

I hesitate to rate sushi places because I just don’t think my palate is all that discerning — but I enjoyed my meal at Taketei because I felt that the fish we ordered(assorted sashimi starter plus a couple of rolls) was tasty enough, we were well-attended to by our waiter, and lastly I thought we got a good meal for what we paid.

Went here with a friend for dinner and really enjoyed it. the place is really small and cute and wasn’t really busy when we went. Many people did come in for take-out though. The sushi was priced very reasonable and it was made fresh. It is also BYOB which is always a plus and a good way to save money. The staff was very friendly and provided quick service.

Taketei serves good, reasonably priced sushi and sashimi, and with the exception of some appetizers and desserts, sushi and sashimi is all they do. Moreover, they don’t have a lot of rolls with more than 4 ingredients(like you might find at other sushi places). Taketei is also BYOB. The only downside I can list about this restaurant is its slow service, for which it only gets a 4 star rating from me. The restaurant is small, around 20 seats, and the interior is simple and well-lit. Despite being right by the Berwyn El, there was no noticeable noise from the passing trains.
