Bruised and wilted apples = questionable produce. I popped in here while in the area for a quick snack(in dire need of sustenance) and wasn’t entirely happy with what I found. Pretty sad little selection of fruits and veggies, and lots of junk food. Not that that’s a bad thing, and if its what you are looking for, then have at it. However, their ethnic food section(mainly Mexican) looked quite good with spices and the like. It just wasn’t what I was here for. A $ 2−3oz bag of trail mix and m&m’s later(holy overpriced!)…I was saved from starvation, but questioned my stop into Supermercado La Familia. Perhaps its better for other things, but for a quick stop for semi-healthy snack? Not so much. Plus, the apples looked neglected! Sad apples.

It’s not the classiest market, but it does a good job of providing a wide range of foods/beverages and the prices are not too horrible. I know I’m going to be paying full retail price for certain items(like $ 1.89 for a 2-liter instead of half the price due to sales and whatnot at a large chain store like Dominicks just a few blocks away), but this place is ONEBLOCK from my apartment and I always made a habit of befriending the little local stores that I will be going to frequently, especially when it’s raining/snowing and going one black for what I want right now is much better than trudging four blocks to get the same thing but pay a little less. Anyway, this is going to be our one-stop shop for all things Mexican food. They have the Mexican cheeses that some of our new recipes call for. Plus, they have Jarritos sodas, and hopefully over time I can convince them that the more options of diet soda they decide to stock, the more of it I’ll be buying. I can still get Diet Pepsi for my girl and Diet Squirt for me(because it’s not too easy to find elsewhere). Also, they sell TAMALES! The good, homemade kind in corn husks and yummy lard and tasty spicy pork filling! A 6-pack for $ 5.00! Not bad prices at all, people! Their daily supplies are limited, though — so if you can’t find them one day, try again the next. Also, they were still carrying the rare 3rd-Degree Burn flavor of Doritos. While I know that means«they’ve been on the shelf for a while and just haven’t sold yet», I just took that to mean that you’ll be able to find interesting things here. But they also sell tamarind candy. Yuck. I’ll stick to the tamales and soda, thanks.
