my buddy mick is of serbian heritage. hell, he even went over there to bring home a beautiful bride. but until i asked him, i was unaware there was such a thing as a serbian bakery. that misconception was erased today when i stepped into this little spot on lawrence just east of austin. first off, the girl working behind the counter was friendly and helpful and made me feel welcome. the woman in the back(mother, owner?) was also nice. i finally settled on a large spinach pie and a slice of baklava. both were made on the premises and were simply delicious. this is food made from scratch, with quality ingredients and is the antithesis of corporate food. once again, the generosity of ethnic folks impressed me. despite only showing interest in looking at all the other homemade goodies lined up in the case, the girl insisted i try a few as free samples. amazing everything! i will be back soon to try all the other items including bureks, serbian hamburgers and more. support these places. tell your friends. and go have a great and tasty experience!

When you walk in you instantly get hit get with authentic smells of Balkan bbq aka skara! or for the Balkan people it smells like home. It’s a small place with seating for four people but grabbing something for home is the way To go anyway it has a lot of Serbian deserts, groceries, a deli counter where they sell raw meat by the lb to take home and cook or on the right side they can cook for you. I got the pleskavica sandwich which is a sausage sandwich cooked on a bed of onions with kajmak spread which is a sweeter version of sour cream that taste just like a pice of heaven. I grabbed 2 as even though it’s giant you can help yourself eating all of it in a matter of min and this way I jab another one for later lol. My other favorite is chevapi little sausages of awesomeness and don’t worry they have menus in English next to the counter that you can simply point to what you want and they will make it for you. If you are near by I recommend you stop by and try some Balkan food I promise you won’t leave disappointed.

I’ve only had the same 2 items over maybe 5 trips. I’ve been getting the spinach pie and sometimes the spicy cheese-pepper spread. Both are really delicious, the cheese spread goes well with celery or other veggies. I may decide to try the variety of meats or sandwich-type /pita items at some point.

Best Serbian food in all Chicago land. The cevapi are by far the best I’ve had and that alone would keep me coming back. But thats not all sandys has to offer. They also have tons of sweets from homemade cookies to serbian baklava. Not to mention theres plenty of delicious sausages and meats that have been smoked and seasoned. A great place to go check out especially if youve never tried Serbian cuisine.

Sandy’s has been carrying the Serbian deli torch from the almighty George’s Deli that closed shop earlier this year. Their ultra-smoky Suvi Vrat is the best in the city, so is the burek. The roast pork and lamb on weekends is very good but a little pricey. I’d also recommend the flaky biscuits made with pork cracklings, and the čvarci(aka pork crack). They also own a Serbian restaurant on Higgins, though I haven’t been, if the food is as good as it is here, it’s also worth a trip. Ignore the old reviews, they really don’t do this place justice. Worth a trip across town for!

It’s not much to look at, but they have a great burek. Definitely worth stopping in for one.

This place has a great variety of Eastern European Food. To Ted: There is no Polish women working there. How can you call someone ignorant when you just guessed as to what their ethnicity was?

If you’re a fan of Eastern european delights… Sandy’s is GREAT! Homemade burek, pita, decadent tortes, etc. It doesn’t matter where you’re from in the former Yugoslavia(Croatia, Montenegro, B-H, etc) this place will satisfy all your cravings for food from the ‘old country’. Delights of meat or cheese stuffed in phyllo dough baked to perfection! Make a stop to Sandy’s they have an all-you-can eat buffet as well that I’m personally have not tried but have friends who said it’s worth it!

This is a rather small bakery that is not one of my all time favs., but does sell some pretty good cookies. They of course have other items, breads, pastrys, juices etc… Anytime I’ve driven by or walked by and not gone in, but looked thru the window, they seem to have a good business with lots of regulars hanging around.
