Really great privately owned restaurant. It’s authentic as it gets.

We just got back from the DR and this food was just as incredible as that we had on vacation! Friendly, clean, affordable, flavorful and generous portions. Had the eggs, fried cheese, salami and mangu. Going back again tomorrow!

Oh man, who ever would have thought that mixing Greek and Dominican foods would turn out so delicious?! The gyro jibarito here is a nearly perfect sandwich. That succulent gyro meat is piled on top of this crispy, flattened plantain that is used instead of bread, and the flavor combination is out of this world! The only thing I thought it could use would be to add some more of that white tzatziki sauce… Mmm, I think I’m going to have to try to recreate this at home, because I know I’ve definitely never heard of anything like this back in New Jersey.

You know the food is good when the people who invented the cuisine dine there. I came here with 2 people, 1 who was familiar with Caribbean cuisine and 1 who wasn’t. I happen to love ALL types of Caribbean food so I never turn down a chance to eat it or a chance to share the deliciousness with others. Because one of the members of my party tends to gravitate towards super fancy things, I was nervous because this place is very small and is a no frills restaurant. I ordered the Tres Golpes — mangu, salami, & queso frito and it was amazing. Made me wish I lived in DR so I could eat this for breakfast every morning — but then I’d be 300 lbs and I’m 5’1 so I doubt my frame can support the weight. Anywho, I ordered the Pollo Guisado for the novice and she loved it so much she took an order to go. The other member of our party ordered the steak jibartio and you could taste the garlic in it. Amazing. The jibarito was comparable to those from Boriquen although the platano isn’t as greasy as theirs. Both the Jibarito and the Pollo Guisado came with Arroz con Gandules, which was impeccable. I forgot to ask but the rice *may* contain pork as the original recipe calls for it. I will be returning here regularly. There’s one server, a sweet lady, and the food is ready fast because it’s stored buffet style. If you want AUTHENTIC, delicious meals where you can taste and distinguish all the ingredients in the recipe, this is your place. Also, it’s across the street from a supermercado where I was able to buy plantains, salted pollock, cilantro, grated coconut and yuca for $ 10. Amazeballs.

Can’t wait to try other items on the menu. I’m only givin this place 4 stars & not 5 because the younger lady behind the counter was a bit rude when me & my fam ordered. BUMMER

Steak Jibarito was good but it needed something extra. …flavor was slightly lacking. Mangu with Fried Cheese was so good! Oxtails were amazing as well. Tons of food. The rice was some of the best I’ve had ever. Delivery was pretty quick. Would order again!

Great local cuisine and friendly staff. This is a great neighborhood shop with the largest menu known to man. By recommendation of Unilocal I tried the Jibarito Gyro. It’s a sandwich with fried smashed plantains as the bun, Greek tzacki sauce, gyro meat, onions, lettuce, and tomato. It was quite delicious and came with rice and beans for only $ 5. I also picked up some frozen lemonade which was delicious. My friend got the pork and chicken Jibaritos as well and liked them equally as much. The staff was super friendly and it is clearly a family run business. It was somewhat busy and clearly a fun neighborhood hangout for family’s and individuals alike. Overall if you are willing to try something a bit outside of American comfort food, this is a great spot to do it!

I love visiting small family-owned local businesses, usually the food is prepared with passion and a true love of the ingredients and the cuisine, and Punta Cana Restaurant definitely fit the bill. A bit of a hole in the wall, the restaurant is very small(maybe four tables all together) — you order at the counter(you can see into the kitchen and also some of the food prepared behind a glass divider) and then take a seat while they prepare your meal for you. When we arrived, it was a bit before lunch, so I was hankering for some ‘brunch-y’ type food if possible. There was a couple items listed under ‘Breakfast’ on the board on the wall, one which I think was essentially mashed green plantains with fried eggs, a little side salad, and some type of meat — unfortunately they had just sold out of the last of the mashed plantains, and when I asked how long it would be to prepare another batch, they said about 20 minutes. I honestly didn’t mind, as it showed how they were willing to stick to the ‘right way’ to make their dishes versus trying to speed things up but deliver less quality. The guy at the register(I’m thinking he was the owner or manager) suggested a daily special — goat stew served with yellow rice and a side salad. We happily ordered two. Fast forward maybe 7 minutes and we had two HUGE steaming plates of food in front of us. The goat was perfectly braised, tender falling off the bone. I gobbled it up, mixing the succulent sauce into the rice, interspersed with bites of a very simple shredded lettuce and tomato salad(refreshing). While my dining mate and I ate, a few locals drifted in and out, a couple of them also ordering the goat stew. This place is as authentic as you can get — delicious food and very friendly, laid back service. Will definitely be back to try that mashed plantain dish, along with whatever else they have on the menu!

Food was delicious! I ordered the Jabarito Steak and it took about 10 minutes to make. I also tried the Rabo and Chivo which were both pretty good. Definitely try this place if you’re in the mood for some great spanish food.

I come here often to get my fix. A Nuyorican married to a Dominican I sometimes need to have a mangu con los tres golpes prepared stat! They always come correct. Their morir soñando be on point although I wish they would add a bit of lime at the top. If u never had morir soñando u need to try it. It’s evaporated milk mixed with orange juice with some sugar and vanilla extract. It’s slamming! I also recently a surprise beach day i did for my wife catered by them and they did a great job. Definitely recommend this spot to anyone looking to have some good Dominican food. They are a little slow with the service tho, but that’s pretty much any Dominican spot in the world.

The rice and beans were so authentic and delicious that I almost cried. We don’t have anything close to this in San Jose, CA. Its a little hole in the wall type place, which is great since it made for great conversation about the Dominican Republic and all things pertaining to the culture. The food portions are big and the employees are sweet, sweet people. It was delightful experience in every way to visit.

The mangu reminded me of the mangu that a Dominican friend used to prepare for breakfast. I’ve never been a fan of my eggs sunny side up, but I didn’t complain when they came that way with my mango and fried cheese. Went back a week after the first visit and didn’t get in the door good before I noticed everyone had their heads down. They were all bent over individual bowls of sancocho. After I got my own bowl, I understood why. It was so good that it was wrong.

This hole in the wall is a gem!!! My friend invited me out for breakfast and brought me here. I can’t even tell you how many times I passed this place and never stopped in. We both had the mangu with fried eggs and fried cheese. It was absolutely delicious. Café con leche was amazing. Again this is a hole in the wall so dont expect a five star atmosphere but expect absolutely delicious food! Cant wait to go back!

There’s a Dominican breakfast dish called ‘mangu’ that the bf raves about. It’s a plate of mashed plaintains, salami, fried egg and fried cheese. Sounds like a good combo, right? I thought so, too. Sadly, not that many restaurants offer it on their menu, so imagine how excited the bf was to find out that Punta Cana served it. Punta Cana is small, quaint and has this great family-like atmosphere. There was a large family taking up a majority of the seats, laughing and eating away. Although they were absorbed in their conversation, they were very quick to welcome us and offer us some of their unused seats. The menu is pretty diverse for a small, unassuming corner restaurant. They have American breakfast offerings, gyros, pitas, burgers, but also jibaritos and ready-made Puerto Rican food. And of course… the mangu. It takes about 10 – 15 minutes to make, but it is definitely worth the wait. The mashed plantains and the fried cheese combo are so good together and the egg is just an added bonus. I was pretty full off this alone that I practically forgot about the salami, but one bite of it was all I really needed. The portion was so huge that I had enough to enjoy the next day. The bf definitely gave it his official sign of approval by devouring the plate. Ahh, comfort food. We’ve been back a couple times and this dish is made with tons of love every time. Great meal for $ 8.50? Put it on your to-do list for 2013! CC’s accepted, ya’ll! No minimums!
