I have seen a lot of good reviews for this place, so I must have been there on an off-night. My bother lives in the neighborhood, and apparently it’s the only ice cream place nearby, so in we went… We bought 4 ice cream cones: 3 single scoops and one waffle cone. 2 out of the 4 had to be returned for a new flavor since they were BADLY freezer-burned(there were ice chips). The girl who scooped for us made the smallest scoops ever — hovering over an empty cone. We asked for sprinkles for my 2-year old’s cone, and there were literally about 25 total sprinkles on the whole scoop — then I looked, and I think we were charged $ 1.50 for that! Pricing was obscure, not listed in plain sight as far as I could see, so I was completely shocked when she announced $ 17 for the paltry cones we were served! Stay away, perhaps they will bring in better options to the ‘hood!

Very nice worker. They didn’t have a couple of things I wanted to order. Guess their stock is limited. This isn’t the most inviting environment I’ve ever been to(there are a couple of tables) but the friendliness of the staff made the visit worth it. They just need restock their goodies.

PLEASENOTE: The original location of Mitchell’s Ice Cream and Candies was in South Shore. They moved to Homewood in the late 60s/early 70s and it was truly one of the best ice cream shops EVER. I grew up on it. It was all natural, family-owned. Well, in 2005 or so, the son of the founder sold the place and it now officially sucks. The one in Homewood is barely ever open and they started adding bad(artificial) ingredients. I can’t believe that whoever now owns it is actually opening new locations. It’s so sad. Why did Mr. Mitchell, Jr. sell? Why is he allowing his name to be so tarnished? They used to have the best strawberry ice cream, with real strawberries. Now they use artificial color so it looks like Pepto Bismol. I wish they would just close and let the original Mitchell’s RIP.

it’s 97 degrees F outside and my husband and i decided to go for a short walk to mitchell’s for an ice cream. we’ve got some really good ice cream shops back home in the sf bay area and enjoy good ice cream. well, don’t waste your time or your money at this place. you’ll be better off somewhere else, maybe even a frozen haagen daz bar. there were many flavors listed on the board, but those were only for pints, if available. only 12 flavors that could be served on a cone or in a cup. the ice cream was not good ice cream, really grainy. my scoop of ice cream, as well as my husband’s was hollow in the middle — it looked big, but was full of air. at $ 3.25 a scoop it was a total rip-off.

It was a nice night so we decided to take a walk for ice cream and instead of the usual Pinkberry trip, we tried Mitchell’s instead. Pretty average ice cream and a really small selection of flavors and options here. My husband and I both agreed that our ice cream choices were«just okay» and not very flavorful at all. Honestly, we would have been better off walking to the Baskin-Robbins across the street from our place instead of venturing here. Kind of a shame since there are tons of fro yo places in River North, but no real ice cream shops except this one.

I must say it was a pretty depressing ice cream trip. It’s the first hot day of the year and me and my co-workers wanted to cool down with a little ice cream. The sign lists a decent amount of flavors, however, they actually had only a small portion in the shop. The ice cream was the definition of «just ok» and the servings sizes were very small. Unless you want one tiny little scoop of mediocre ice cream you probably should look elsewhere.

So this place is cute… but if you have ever been to Margie’s…you just cant give this place much credit. Yes, they have homemade ice cream and homemade treats… but its no comparison to Margie’s. SHERUINEDME!~ So they just have their ice cream flavors listed on the wall but your not really sure how it works. I actually asked the guy behind the counter and he looked at me like I was retarded… maybe I am, but still. I was a little confused! The ice cream was good. I got a strawberry waffle cone. If I am in a pinch for a ice cream fix, this place will do… however, I will probably skip in in the future.

Who let rainbow cone in the loop close? Who? I want to know. Anyhow, after finding out that Rainbow Cone was closed and we did not want to support the Froyo place we remembered passing Mitchell’s. We rode back up to Mitchell’s and walked in. The employee was friendly and offered us tastings of the ice cream. We did not feel rushed and we were able to figure out what we wanted. The menu(s) on the wall are not very clear. There are multiple freezer/coolers that hold the ice cream and at times the employee has to walk from behind the counter to access another freezer. Weird. My Chocolate chip ice cream shake was tasty. The other bike riders I was with bought a pint of their ice cream and the other bought a chocolate mint shake. I bet their sundaes are fantastic. Anyhow, one last odd thing… this place is owned by Gino’s East which is next door, it is not the original location(Homewood, IL is). I might be back. Bike parking outside on street.

Old School all the way. Homemade Ice Cream, old fashioned candy, and no nonsense dining. I was impressed to find a place that makes their own ice cream and it was good, but it’s hard to get excited over a $ 5 one scoop sundae. Mitchell’s has 2 things going for it. 1. It’s the only place in the neighborhood to get good ice cream at the drop of a dime. 2. They sell rock candy… BOOM! I wish they were open later and a little less expensive. Otherwise, worth checking out when you have a sweet tooth.
