Great gallery. My pal David Csiscko had a show here recently, and the opening was great fun. The art was displayed well, and the rest of the gallery was well laid out as well. Especially like the sofas for chilling, people watching and texting your peeps while sipping wine and deciding what trouble to get into next when it’s Gallery Night.

Judy Saslow Gallery is one of the few Chicago galleries specializing in Outsider Art – a manipulated term that breaks down into several subcategories: Art Brut, Folk Art, Visionary art, art of the insane, Naïve art, and many other terms which still do not explain why this art movement is incredibly pricey for the almost dubious, unequal quality of the art. You can debate the merits of this movement all you want, but I have real problems with the artists and the galleries that«represent» them. One of the most popular locally, an emotionally unbalanced bag lady who worked on the Art Institute steps in the 70s, 80s and 90s, created crudely drawn sketches that now sell for thousands of dollars. Judy Saslow Gallery represents well-known and emerging Outsider artists: Edmond Engel, Bill Traylor, Mr. Imagination, Michel Nedjar, Joseph Yoakum and Franois Burland. The exhibitions are excellently presented and polished, which is a lot more than I can say about 75% of the work shown.

This gallery likes to display selections of outsider folk art. The works may be simplistic but can be easily enjoyed by the masses.
