Not sure why I continue to go here every day because it is a solid one star place. 1.) Nearly every other morning at 8:30AM they are out of dark roast coffee and it will take«at least 10 minutes to brew it» 2.) Nearly every other week they are out of almond milk for at least a day. But most importantly their staff is rude. In particular one person who is there every morning who couldn’t care less if the customers walked through the door or not. Good Food. Poor Execution and Follow Through. Hideous Service. From now. AVOID.

This place is really good. It has a nice atmosphere, good for chatting or for working, the tubes they play are good and the coffee is good. Plus they have WiFi. The rice crispy is really good here.

It was great to run across this eatery. They have a great selection of pastries and sandwiches. Add to that combo a selection of different coffees and espresso drinks prepared to perfection. It makes for a nice stop on the way to the museums.

Visiting from LA and I know what good dessert tastes like and I tried the rainbow cake and fell in love! Very tasty and the place is very hipster and cool looking. I loved it so much that about 4 or 5 hours after I had it, I asked my boyfriend if we could walk back and get a slice to go for when my sweet tooth would kick in again. They have a great selection of other foods and assorted pastries and desserts.

Lots going on here, but the staff was friendly and we enjoyed ourselves. Great carrot cake for breakfast… As the young lady there said, never a bad time for cake. A lot of organic options to be had.

Perfect sweet spot in Chicago. We had a chocolate cupcake that was perfectly moist, and a mint chip cookie that was really good. The store was very cute and decorated very nice. They had a wide variety of food and pastries. Perfect place to eat breakfast, or satisfy a sweet tooth. I would definitely recommend it, and will be back when I visit Chicago

Five stars for the vibe alone. Shoutout to whoever designed and decorated the place, because it is bea-u-ti-ful. Wide variety of pastries, desserts, and drinks, although I was disappointed that they didn’t list any prices for the food(and it turns out to be pretty pricey too!)

Awesome bakery with delicious coffee. Had a couple of the pastries. All were great the Hazelnut and crossing muffin especially. Ok the apricot tart was also amazing. Had the Mayan Mocha. Perfectly tasty and not overly sweet. Service was ok. Would definitely return for a quick breakfast bite.

Free coffee( Unilocal check-in), yes please. Felt bad about getting a freebie and running so I purchased a hot chocolate for the mother who took one sip and said oh my, it’s like melted frangos(I’ll take that as it was pretty tasty). This shop is adorable and my coffee was ready before I had even finished paying. I hate that I can’t really eat anything here cause it looks and smells delicious but I’ll be back in for a café au lait or a well pulled espresso. Yum, just yum. Oh and as noted, it’s very loud in here. It’s not a sit and chill zen spot, it’s a move it or lose it, eat & get caffeinated joint.

We were staying a few blocks away and some friends recommended this place as a good place to grab breakfast. It’s certainly a nice change of pace from the usual Starbucks or Peet’s. The interior is lovely — there’s limited seating(in Eames by Herman Miller chairs no less) at mostly communal tables. As a few people have noted, things move at a more sedate pace here so expect to wait a bit even if it’s not busy. On the coffee front, they offer brews from multiple roasters including Milwaukee favorite Colectivo(holla!) and some pretty creative drinks including cold brew on nitro tap. For eats, I went with the avocado toast to offset the excesses of the night before and the Mister had the breakfast sandwich. My toast was«pretty good» — the bread used was spectacular but the«herbed ricotta» was fairly bland. The breakfast sandwich on the other hand was great — I love the addition of tomatillo salsa for a little kick. If you want a treat, the pastry case at the front is extensive — there are cakes, bars, beautiful croissants and so much more. I didn’t see any savoury options(another reviewer mentioned a ham & cheese croissant). Prices are reasonable, the staff is nice and the space is great. If you’re a serious coffee drinker, or just don’t want to deal with all the 17-year old UGG booted girls ordering pumkinspicechaimochacaramel frappucinos, Goddess and the Baker is a great stop.

Overall: Great spot for a casual breakfast/lunch or a quick pick up. The good: Great atmosphere, just a sense of fun overall. Very relaxed but upbeat vibe. Great music too. Coffee tasted good and the food tasted fresh and was tasty. Service was friendly. A ton of different bakery options. The bad: Not enough seating, chairs were uncomfortable, the food took awhile to come out, but they were busy. Not huge portions, luckily we weren’t too hungry. Atmosphere: 8⁄10 Service: 8⁄10 Food: 8⁄10

I wanted to top off an all day shopping spree with a sweat treat. I decided on this location mainly because they had a Unilocal deal for a free cup of coffee, but am very glad this is where I went. The ordering process was kind of chaotic. It was almost as if I was speaking a different language, when all I wanted to do was order a few different types of truffles and a cookie. I had to repeat myself 4 times to the girl who took my order, and even then I had to repeat myself yet again to the girl who filled my order. They were both very friendly, though, and it was crazy busy so I wasn’t too bothered by it. I managed to get a seat at a table with an older man enjoying lunch. He said he’s eaten lunch here every week day for two months and has yet to be displeased, so there’s that. Incidentally, he stuck around and chatted with me which was a nice little touch, although not really anything the bakery can take credit for(except to say they attract friendly clientele). I ordered a gingerbread man cookie to enjoy while sitting and sipping my coffee. It was a good enough cookie, very fresh but a little less gingery than I prefer(I love ginger though, so my idea of appropriate level of ginger flavor would probably be too much for most people). The coffee was tasty, even if it hadn’t been free, and piping hot. Just the way I like it. I took my truffles to go, but have since eaten them all, oops! I ordered gingerbread, hot buttered rum, candy cane, and hot toddy. The gingerbread and candy cane were underwhelming; not bad but I had high hopes and they were not met. The hot buttered rum and hot toddy more than made up for it; great flavor and perfect consistency. I’ve given 5 stars because this was overall a great experience. If you’re in the general vicinity and looking for a sweat treat, I think you’d be very happy at Goddess and The Baker.

The best coffee shop I’ve been to yet. Beats out the cafes in Seattle and Portland. Whoever designed this place has got aesthetics nailed down. They’ve got details under their thumb. How refreshing it was to see such an eclectic menu. I’ve taken to making my own espresso drinks because I was tired of the deflated cappuccinos, the watery lattes of the coffee shops in times gone by(for good, for ever!) Goddess has an wonder-filling selection of espresso drinks, wines, cold brews, sodas, baked goodies, sandwiches, and more. I have to reiterate again: it is just beautiful in here. I really appreciate cafes that take the time to choose the high road(read: not minimalism– ahem, we all know which cafes are victim to this) and put thought into the atmosphere. They also sell Dark Matter here, which is nice in case you’re far from the actual roastery.

When liquid chocolate is on the menu, I’m not even going to pretend to look at the sandwiches, snacks or salads on there. Good heavens! The s’more frappé is divine! And paired with a red velvet cupcake(a bit much?) makes the rest of my day seem promising! There’s many other great choices here, but I just wanted something sweet. I’m writing this review as I enjoy my treat from a great big table where diners can sit with a book, or prop up their biology notes they’re diligently reviewing. Someone just brought over a hot mama to the couple sitting next to me! Okay, it’s not what you think, but now I’m wondering why I didn’t order that. It’s liquid chocolate with a dash of chipotle, cayenne and cinnamon. Wow! Despite the fact that I will soon be facing the brisk winds of Chicago, I’m totally in love with my frappé — liquid chocolate, marshmallow fluff, graham cracker crumbs, milk and espresso blend, whip cream and topped with chocolate and marshmallows!

With snacks this good, it’s easy to believe the eponymous Baker was divinely inspired. I had samples of a Santa Monica turkey, the BBQ brisket, the garden goddess wrap, a pumpkin latte, and a chocolate cupcake. I loved everything I ate. The brisket was surprisingly outstanding — moist, flavorful, and with a generous helping of thick slices of brisket. The brisket was as good as something from a bbq restaurant, if not better. Service was great — I chatted with the baristas about the surrounding area. And the atmosphere? Clean, modern, and right by the L. I would definitely take visiting friends here! I could go on and wax poetic about the cupcake frosting, the perfectly balanced latte, or the subtle intricacies of the other two sandwiches. I could write about their extensive and amazing coffee selection. But I’ll leave some of the mystery of the Goddess to herself. Definitely make a stop in if you haven’t yet!

Goddess and the baker is what actually comes to mind when you are biting into one of their delicious moist red velvet cupcakes with a light frosting. It’s as if a goddess and the baker got together to make love, and cupcakes, cookies and yummy latte’s came out of it. #CheesyIknow Anyhow let’s get to the chase. The place is full of all kinds of goodies. It’s a beautiful bakery with amazing pumpkin spice latte’ you can really taste the flavor of pumpkin spice. If you don’t care for sweets you can check out their lunch/dinner menu full of healthy options. I enjoyed their bbq brisket and santa monica turkey sandwiches. They also serve an array of beer and wine as well. Come check out the«Goddess and the Baker,’ you won’t regret!

G and B is a café located in the Loop. Its a spinoff of the popular Goddess and the Grocer local chain of delis. G and B also sells products from their grocery stores but its emphasis is on the café. The café serves baked goods and traditional café fare(i.e. sandwiches, coffee drinks), but also appetizers and alcohol. On a recent visit, I ordered the hummus and guacamole«snack,» Thai chicken flatbread, and mac n cheese. The hummus is topped with mango, and the plate included multigrain crackers and pita bread. The Thai chicken flatbread was very generous with the peanut sauce, and was enjoyed by everyone in our party. The mac n cheese was baked to order and was accompanied by a side salad. Mac n cheese was not creamy, but had a nice texture. We also ordered a tuna sandwich, and the multigrain bread made the sandwich stand out. The carrot cake was not overly sweet and was devoured by two people in minutes. My latte drink was well-crafted, and G and B had a nice assortment of local beers, including Revolution, and wines. In addition, G and B has three types of water(sparkling, chilled, and room temperature) available for self-service. I had a marvelous time and can’t wait to go back this week!

Stopped by on the way to work. The staff members were friendly and quick! I got the ham cheese and egg breakfast sandwich. The toast was the perfect crunch — the outer edges just a little burnt. For caffeine: the hazelnut latte. Made perfect. They also had sweets displaying in the front!

Music– 5 stars for playing DMB and OAR and the like. Love you already. Salad– Vietnamese chicken salad. Pretty good, a little dry. Could have used more dressing but that’s a personal preference. Iced green tea latte– YUM. Took a while to get my salad(about 15 mins) which is a little long over the lunch hour. Overall happy experience, will definitely return.

I’ve visited three times, but have yet to order actual food, so keep that in mind as you read this. This rating may change over time, but for now, three solid stars. On my first visit, I was falling asleep at my desk so I ventured over for a small soy chai tea latte. And of course, since I simply cannot(and will not) resist anything sweet, I also purchased a red velvet brownie. Why? Because red velvet. And because brownie. And because red velvet brownie together?! The combination just blew my mind and had potential for sweet, yummy goodness. And let me tell you, this brownie did not disappoint! It was super rich and flavorful, though mine could have used a bit more cream cheese(see photo). I highly recommend trying it if you see it in their lineup of sweet treats. It even took me a while to eat it — shocking I know, since I got busy at work that day. The brownie held up well and I ate it when I got home. Their soy chai tea latte($ 4.75) was, hands down, probably the best chai tea latte that I’ve had in the Loop. It was definitely more flavorful than ones I’ve sampled at other places. It isn’t watered down either, which is nice. It’s the perfect blend of sweet with a hint of spice. My chai and brownie set me back $ 9.67, which isn’t cheap, but the quality was pretty good, so I can sort of justify the cost. On my second visit, my sweet tooth needed to be pacified. The triple chocolate chip cookie caught my eye, and I knew it had to be mine. I was tempted to get the red velvet brownie again, but resisted in the spirit of trying something new. The cookie was pretty pricey at $ 3.26. On the plus side, the cookie was pretty delicious and large, so I suppose that justifies the cost. On my third visit, my fiancé and I stopped by one Sunday after I finished working. I definitely needed a little picked me up. We paid just over $ 23 for an iced soy chai($ 3.75 + $ 0.50 for soy), a bottle of Japanese green tea($ 3.45), a brisket sandwich(served with chips)($ 10.95) and a bag of Kettle chips($ 2.25). Ye gods! That is *steep*! And, I didn’t even order a sandwich or anything. Ambiance wise, I like the bright interior, modern décor and large communal table in the open seating area. The shop is somewhat small, so I could see it getting crowded during peak hours. Staff wise, the team members I’ve interacted with have all been friendly, polite and professional. When you place an order to go, they give you a number and bring your order out to you. I definitely see myself stopping by in the future since I’ve got my eye on some more of their sweets, specifically the rainbow cake and cupcakes, which are supposed to be superb. Also, I’m interested in trying some of their pastries for breakfast along with the soy chai tea latte of course. Plus, they are open late on weekdays & weekends. I love that G&TB is literally steps away from my office. More importantly, G&TB is probably the closest place to get a high quality sweet treat. My rationale is this: if you’re going to eat that«bad» food, go big or go home. Get the best quality sweet(s) you can find, splurge on them and gobble them down guilt-free. Heck, you only live once, right? However, G&TB is a bit pricey for me, so my visits will have to be infrequent so I don’t break the bank. After all, momma’s gotta save up her $$$ for her doughnuts/donuts fund after all. Speaking of which, G&TB sells them. Has anyone had them? And if so, are they any good? Hit me up and let me know! Thanks in advance! ;-p
