I was searching for the Louise Bourgois Helping Hands instillation that commemorates Jane Addams the last time I was here. Although right next to Navy Pier this area is rather mellow and offers great views of the Gold Coast and a bit of space and serenity. I really enjoy coming here to take in the view and peace. I did find out that the Hands have been moved to The Chicago Women’s park South of here. Next time I am in town I will have to check that out.

Growing up near Chicago my whole life, I have a natural aversion to Navy Pier. But this park is one of the few redeeming qualities of that area. I came for the first time to see this summer’s Shakespeare in the Park play. It was a perfect evening and a great park to watch the play with the lake to the left and views of the sun setting over the city to the right. It’s a nice spacey area and there weren’t very many people there(besides those watching the play), a nice reprieve from the crowds at Navy Pier. If you need a break from the Navy Pier tourist trap, this is definitely a good place nearby to explore.

This little park is just west of Navy Pier. It’s HUGE draw– the big black marble fountain that is located in the middle of it. It shoots water out the top, and all around the base, and kids lose their minds running in it. It’s really a fun time to sit on a bench nearby and watch. There’s also various sculptures stationed around the park that’s fun to peruse. And in the summer of 2009– a very controversial air balloon ride(tethered) is available.(The balloon thing looks crazy cheesy and hokey to me.) Do not overlook this great space just west of Navy Pier!
