Well this place isn’t the end-all be-all that was described to me. It took forever to get our food and it was average at best. The cabbage was good, the rice and peas were on the drier side and the chicken was okay, but the shrimp was actually great. I had such high hopes, but feel like I was missing something. On to the next!

Authentic Jamaican cuisine. One cook which makes for a consistent taste. Original recipes handed down from generation to generation. Rice and peas are like no other the perfect amount of thyme and coconut milk. The jerk shrimp are amazing as well as the chicken. My favorite is the Red Snapper spicy and cooked to perfection. Daddy O and I go way back from working there to being a customer. Whenever I get a chance I go, and for some odd reason I always want Daddy O’s jerk pit on Mondays when it’s closed LBVVS

Me and Daddy-O went to the same Food and Sanitation class at Olive Harvey College. After class one day he invited me over to try his Jerk Chicken drumstick. It was very delicious. From that point, i started recommending people to his restaurant. He has the best Jerk chicken and Rice and beans in Chicago. Hands down. I’ve tried them all. He also gives you a super large portion so that you probably wont be able to finish. Prices are well worth it. $ 12 gets a lot. Believe me. I cook and went to school for this and i know excellence. Whats up Daddy-O? HQ

Hello Everyone, I haven’t been here in a year but my memories of this place are good :) They are the only local place I know that makes authentic gumbo with a little burn. I don’t remember if it had the red or brown rue but it was good and worth the risk of eating at a hole in the wall. From the outside you may think twice before trying this place but this place is an example of how the best stuff comes from the worst looking places. Enjoy, Elihu

I started my love affair with Daddy O in 1997. I lived downtown at the time and I would call my orders. Not once was it ready when i got there! But that’s ok, because outside of the wait Daddy O serves up THEBEST jerk chicken & shrimp that I’ve ever had. One order is enough for 2 people unless you’re greedy like me. I’ve put so many people on to Daddy O throughout the years that I should be part owner by now. Don’t forget the seafood gumbo! FYI — Be prepared to wait, perfection takes time!

Daddy o’s i call him the jerk chicken nazi. You had better walk up to the counter and order your food. Don’t change nothing about your order. Warning or you will pay. He snaps out sometimes yes, He knows his food is good so if you leave so what. Daddy o don’t play, ok i warned you. Now the chicken and shrimp combo is thee best. You can’t go wrong with the jerk chicken sooo good. I have been going there for 20 years.

A cozy little jerk shack nestled in the heart of the South East side on Cottage Grove. I stopped in here for a late lunch recently and I ordered up the jerk chicken dinner. I’d have to say that it was the most tender chicken I’ve ever had. by itself, the chicken was spiced with some tasty flavor, but you pour on that little container of juice, an WOW! now that’s some kick! It wasn’t so overpowering to make me go blind like some of the other jerk places I’ve been to, but man was it good. The sides of beans and rice were flavorful. I got a seriously large plantain. and the little side of salad came with some sweet and tangy dressing and it actually had veggies other than lettuce! While not high end fine dining, I would stop here anytime.

I go to Daddy’s everytime I’m in the area. I haven’t tried the chicken because the shrimp has me hooked! I can’t get enough of it! It perfectly spiced and full of fresh vegetables and thyme sprigs. The dinner comes with bread salad and sweet plantains. I’m able to stetch the dinner into two meals. For $ 12 I think its quite a deal. Just so you know the place has no ambience whatsoever but the food is fantastic.

Last year, at the high recommendation of my husband’s coworker, we tried the jerk/sides @ Daddy O’s and WASNOTIMPRESSED. Fast forward, 9÷4÷09 @ the African Festival of the Arts & I didn’t remember eating at this establishment and out of all the places selling food and observing the fact that Daddy O’s food was covered and not readily accessible to the freakin’ flies… Jerk chicken wasn’t bad & rice/peas could of had a little more gravy on. The only major gripe I had was that there was no cabbage or plantains =(. Furthermore, garden salad was the 2nd side choice, but the young man was about to place it in the same container as the hot food. Sorry, I do not want my garden salad/minus dressing, mixed in with hot food. esp. since I wanted it to go, to be eaten at home, on the other side of town. After firmly stating my claim, the gentleman who I believe was the boss, gave it to me my way. =) $ 10 Mon 9÷7÷09 — After standing there observing before ordering, I witnessed a female food preparer that DIDNOT change her plastic glovs after handling money… FORGETIT! Instead, my husband swayed me in to getting a vegetarian taco.
