$ 10 beers(not even pints), average food and a couple of strange people on staff. Will not be returning.

Bacon wrapped chorizo stuffed dates. Enough said. Love this place. Only complaint is the communal seating which can interrupt a dinner and make for social awkwardness. Other than that, everything is great. Did I mention the bacon wrapped chorizo stuffed dates?

First time here and I couldn’t even find the door, haha. I came here on a Friday night and of course it’s crowded and cramped. The space is as big as the inside of a semi truck… not even exaggerating. It’s extremely narrow and long so you will be overwhelmed with the lack of personal space. Besides the issue of space and noise, the food is incredibly delicious. Food takes sometime to come out. We ordered chorizo dates, pork shoulder, whipped brandade, sweet potato(fries?), and slow roasted pork. Everything was seasoned perfectly. I think during the day or coming when it’s not the weekend would be better. Be prepared to wait if you have more than two people because they do not take reservations.

Wife and I come here all the time, one of our absolute favorite places in the city. The chicken liver crostini and flatbread are incredible. Service is always fantastic, let them know of any allergies and they will customize a menu on the spot. Great spot.

Hubs and I sat at the bar and the bar tender was friendly and knowledgeable yet not obtrusive. We –almost reluctantly– ordered the bacon-wrapped dates everyone keeps raving about, almost certain the level of hype those get is over the top. Proven wrong! They were the best bacon-wrapped dates we’ve encountered so far(and these days so many places have something like it). We also had something similar to meatballs, very flavorful and much enjoyed. We weren’t that hungry, else we would’ve gone for actual entrees rather than these small plates. Hubs enjoyed a beer, I a Spanish cidre. Coming from Europe I much prefer French and German style ciders, which are much less sweet and sparklier than US ciders, so I loved seeing a good selection here. Looking forward to going back some time.

I stopped by Avec for a long work lunch and definitely wasn’t disappointed. If you’re doing lunch, I recommend getting there right when they open so can get a seat and put your food order in before the lunch rush hits. As I came during Chicago Restaurant Week, for only $ 22 I got the following items from the prix fixe menu: charred sweet potatoes, Avec burger and sesame cocoa crunchies. A lot of restaurants skimp back on portions for lunch menus, but the portions here were huge and I left completely full. By far, the highlight of the meal was the burger. It was packed with flavor due to all the sauces and I couldn’t help but scarf it down. The service was also great. I was seated at the bar and although it got pretty busy, the bartender was constantly refilling my water and my food was brought out quickly. Overall I had a great experience and can’t wait to go back to try their famous dates!

This place is amazing. We were a party of 4 and ordered 3 small plates and 1 large. We left full. I suggest ordering less and then ordering more if you are hungry. Prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the food. People list not taking reservations as a con, but I like first come first serve as it allows out of towners to try new places without planning. Also, there are plenty of fine places to eat around Avec if they are full. We got there right at 5 and were seated immediately.

Im not sure if this is my favorite restaurant, but it does have my favorite dish. The chorizo stuffed dates are just amazing. They are better than any other date dish that I have ever had. They are stuffed with a ton of chorizo, wrapped in bacon and then covered on a tomato pepper sauce. They have perfect amount of spice. If I had to pick a last meal, it may be a few orders of these… All the other food was great as well and I really enjoyed the burger they serve for lunch. Overall great place to check out.

The food at Avec is awesome, service is okay, and ambiance is awful. The chorizo dates were my favorite dish: much spicier than I had anticipated, but I love spicy food so that was fine. Our server and the hostess were both kind of… gruff. I was also irritated because I made a point of telling our waitress that we needed to be out of the restaurant by a certain time to catch a show, and she totally blanked on that so I had to flag her down frantically after we’d finished our meal. My biggest issue with this place is the space. Yes, it’s super cramped, and you dine at long tables smooshed up next to total strangers, which is not my thing at all, HOWEVER that is not my biggest issue. The tables/benches/chairs are AWFUL. The chairs are super tiny, basically little wooden squares with backs that are approximately one inch tall(that is not an exaggeration). I am a pretty small person and I could barely even cross my legs under the table, which was built for Smurfs. Also, my friend and I both had issues with the super mutant and pretentious wooden front door to the restaurant. What a terrible atmosphere. For this reason, I won’t be back again, which is a shame because the food was very good and decently priced.

I finally had a chance to eat here last week after hearing many of my sister’s rave reviews. It most definitely held up to the standards. The small seating area definitely makes you feel like you are in a metropolitan city, so if you don’t like eating in crowded spaces, it might not be the place for you. We tried many of the current plates since there were five of us dining. Some of my favorites were the chorizo stuffed dates, the paella, the burrata, and the steak. The plates came out quickly even with a big crowd that night and no one went home hungry. Each of the dishes was well crafted and very tasty. The café avec espresso+brandy and the affogato were great ways to end a delicious meal. I hope to be back soon!

I have to say I really enjoyed this place and even came two nights in a row! There are a few downsides although including a small crowded space that get increasingly louder the closer to peak dinner service you stay. The chairs are extremely uncomfortable most without a back rest and simply hard wood. FOOD: I had the cauliflower tabbouleh both nights and it was a great blend of crunchy and smooth along with sweet and spicy. It is unlike any other tabbouleh and I highly recommend it. The seared trout was another great dish with a warm trout and chilled shrimp. The gyro sausage was another hit and highly recommended. We enjoyed the paella(although the bottom was more crispy the previous night) with sausage and head on shrimp. As well as the pork shoulder with so much pork we couldn’t finish it. For dessert it is a must to get the nutter butters which are conveniently bite sized and curiously crunchy. On the other hand another reason for the 4 stars is that i did not quite understand the apple dessert. It came out hot and crispy on the outside but the apples on the inside were cold… very cold and I am not sure if that was there intention but I believe they did not realize when trying to quickly get it out to the table. They also have nice teas, coffees, and cappuccinos!

Avec has amazing food, but it’s the cramped dining conditions that make it tough for me to give this a higher rating. We went during a weeknight and even at 8:30pm we still had a short wait– they do NOT take reservations. But the wait wasn’t too bad the hostess was very nice and helpful. When we were finally seated it was a tight space. I’m not a big person but it was tight and they are communal tables so you might need to move to let other people out. To eat here with more than one other person might be tough. We split a pizza to start and then split the pork shoulder as our entrée. The pizza was cooked perfectly. The cheese on the pizza was a little too rich but it was very tasty. The pork shoulder was so yummy. Again cooked just right and full of flavor. All of the dishes of our dining neighbors looked great as well. It just would have been nice to have a bit more space. It’s a very small place and again they don’t do reservations, so perhaps I would come back for lunch but dinner might be too much of a production for me.

Avec is all about the dates, pork shoulder, and taleggio focaccia. The dates are exceptionally flavorful, a nice mix of sweet and savory with a hearty chorizo stuffing and bacon wrapping(thanks, Publican Quality Meats!) I would drink shots of the piquillo pepper sauce. The preparation of the pork shoulder varies, but it’s always incredibly tender and a very large portion. The latest rendition I’ve tried, with smoked clams and arugula, was very, very salty — hopefully that was just a one-off occurrence. And man, I’m not a fan of truffle oil in most foods, but I think it actually pairs really well with the soft taleggio in the focaccia. I’d love to try Avec’s other offerings… it’s just hard to stray from the staples above. A bit pricey, but generally worth it.

Hands down, the best I’ve tried while visiting Chicago. Starting with my favorite of the night: Chicken Liver Crostini. This was absolutely outstanding. The smooth and creamy chicken liver pâté was to die for. the stone fruit mostarda with fresh herbs to top the crostini. amazing play of creamy, crunchy, sweet, salty, fresh. I wish I could eat this every day. Chorizo Stuffed Medjool Dates. Another great one. Came in 4 pieces and again, the sweetness of the dates and saltiness of the chorizo and bacon were perfectly balanced. The tomato pepper sauce added a nice touch of acidity that really complimented the dates and made this dish different from other bacon wrapped dates I’ve tried. Definitely recommend! I also tried the Whole Roasted Branzino. Cooked and seasoned perfectly but since it is a mild tasting fish, I always found it a bit boring. They topped it with some wonderful colors which included carrots, parsley, cilantro, garbanzo beans(which were undercooked). It was good but I think the others items on the menu were better. The Pork Shoulder was also pretty good. Super tender with a generous portion. Loved the smoked yogurt that was on top. I would say give this one a try. Service lacked a bit but the food made up for it. If I visit again, I will definitely be back!

Must eats: –Dates –Seafood Paella –Patatas Bravas Must Drink: –Bloody Mary –Atomium beer(so good!) Avoid: –French Exit(tastes like soap) Definitely eat as much as possible here. I heard the waitress say she also loves the trout… Maybe get that too! Overall Yum and *****

Visiting a friend in the city and came by one of her favorite spots! We called in on a Monday and night and were told a 45 minute wait, but as soon as we arrived we were seated at the bar! Started off with some delicious rose sangria with blueberries. One serving is enough for about 2 wine glasses. As for the food– incredible. We were a party of 3, and split the stuffed dates, the strawberry salad(they used cherries that day), the steak, and the paella. All items so so original, fresh, and satisfying! Favorite, by far, were the stuffed dates in a pablano pepper tomato sauce. My least favorite dish was the paella(only because I was comparing it to a paella I recently had in Spain., probably not fair!), but it was a huge portion, perfect to share. I was most impressed by their desserts– my friend I came with us a pastry chef, and she said it was one of her spots in the city for unique deserts. The home made nutter butters come in 4(size of ice cubes, I’d say) and great to share. although I could have easily finished them on my own… even two orders! We might have gone a bit overboard on dessert, as we also ordered the goat cheese and cookie, as well as the merengue tart. But really… Can you really ever go overboard on dessert? Needless to say, not a bite was left on our plates from all our meals. I love this place. Price point is amazing for the quality and location of the restaurant. I can’t wait til my next visit to Chicago to come back here and try the rest of the menu.

Avec is pretty special. Once you figure how how to get inside(side door on the left, push really hard) it’s a long narrow floor plan. Choose to sit at the bar or a table. Their are extensive wine choices not as reasonably priced(the one recommended to me was $ 15 a glass) and some great beer options — I had the Satan Red Ale, 8 bucks & delicious! It was late and I wasn’t starving, so I choose the Brussels sprout salad that had a light dressing and the thinly shaved, raw Brussels sprouts were ingenious as a salad! Very good & I would order that again if I find myself at Avec. I wanted one other dish, but small. The server mentioned a few items that they’d do half orders of — one of those the chorizo stuffed bacon wrapped dates. Done. These were nothing short of amazing. Much better with the chorizo than not, in my opinion, because the dates are so sweet — I’m all about adding more savory. And that piquillo pepper sauce — YES! It was so delicious that I would like to put it on more and more things. Unilocalers didn’t steer me wrong on this one. Thanks, you guys!

Delicious small plates that pack big flavor. //WAIT //Less than 5 minutes at 9PM on a weeknight for a party of 2 //AMBIANCE //Prepare to eat in an incredibly narrow restaurant with communal tables where you will sit shoulder to shoulder with other dining patrons. //FOOD // + Chorizo stuffed dates: salty, sweet, and savory, all in a cute little package + pork shoulder: Ridiculously tender hunk of savory meat. Will please the carnivore in you. Definitely worth a try if you are in Chicago
