I was referred to this bakery by a friend, Darlene the lady who answered the phone was rude, and she hardly allowed me to get out what I was seeking from their bakery. If I didn’t know any better I would have thought it was an inconvenience to contact a bakery regarding a birthday cake! I sent an email to their listed email address with a photo and I was telling her this when she nastily said«you gotta bring it in» I said O okay, and she responded with«when do you need the cake» I said on the 27th «We won’t be open that day» I responded okay thank you, and she hung up. It would have been polite and good customer service for her to say«I do apologize our email is currently down, I’m sure it would be an inconvenience for you however you would have to bring a photo into the bakery and we can discuss at that time, when would you need the cake by? I then would have stated the 27th and at that time she would politely say«Unfortunately our bakery will be closed on the 27th» and then offered an alternative option in the case that the alternative option doesn’t work for me you retain customers by saying«I do understand and we hope to be of better assistance for you in the future» you don’t just hang up and let money walk away you try and keep it! Based off a 3min conversation I know I will not use their services, furthermore we seek to support our African American business but most times our own people act as though their doing us a favor when we are paying for the service! I just don’t understand. I’ll take my service up north like I’ve always done.

I have ordered cakes from A Piece of Cake for many years. Every one has been absolutely delicious. Their caramel cakes are wonderful and I always get asked where I had it made. I live on the north side of Chicago, but find a way each time I need to celebrate an occasion that is important to me. It’s all in the taste!

Well, I have to say that this place is über small and shabby. I mean like 10×11 small. Its hot, they have 1 chair in the entire place, not that they could fit many more but when looking through cake books sitting is nice for a bakery with their history. Today there were 11 people in that small space, most waiting on cakes that come from some place that the staff has to walk outside go get the cakes and bring them back in. smh. A couple people were only wanting to buy cake slices or cookies. There was 1 person upfront. THEYREALLYNEEDTOGET A COUPLEMOREUPFRONTPEOPLETOBECOMEMOREEFFICIENT. No one even asked if we needed help. Eventually just left without ordering anything for my daughters birthday. This place gave off a weird vibe and their air conditioner WHICHISDIRECTLYOVERTHEENTRANCE was leaking WATER all over us as we entered and left the facility. Makes one wonder what the kitchen looks like. WEGOTTADOBETTER. I’m giving 1 star because the slices and cookies looked fresh lol

i am a long-time follower of a piece of cake bakery. the desserts are great and the staff is friendly and helpful. i purchase every holiday and birthday cake from them. the caramel cake is extraordinary and the mouthwatering rolls melt in your mouth. Add a little butter to the rolls and pop them in the microwave for a few seconds and you have yourself a delectable treat. they don’t sell rolls year round, so i make sure i get them on every holiday. I was last at the bakery picking up a caramel cake for my nephew’s birthday. it was so moist and delicious. i had a simple round caramel cake but while was there I saw the most adorable carousel baby shower cakes being picked up. the mother was ecstatic. she loved it. i saw several other cakes being picked up with such extraordinary designs and attention to detail. I will always be a fan of a piece of cake bakery.

We have followed this bakery for 19 years, from Cottage Grove to Western, to the current location on 87th street. Our family really likes the cakes and the people have been really nice. However, we have reached the end of the road now. We have supported them even though this location is the smallest and so shabby, the cakes still taste good. This week I got up early to order a cake and they don’t open until 10am — what bakery isn’t open in the morning? When I went back at the end of the day, it smelled like bleach — not appealing in a food place. The order and pick up was fine, but just looking around the place, I realized I just can’t support a place that doesn’t care about how it looks. Or how clean it is. There are just simple things that can be done to make it look like a quality establishment. And when you look through the doorway to the back, you can see tiles missing in the floors. Makes you wonder how clean the actual kitchen and baking areas are. I wish I could bankroll an update for this place like the Food Network shows. The interesting part and the final straw is that the three layers in the cake are so uneven! The bottom layer is regular size, the middle layer is about double that, and the top layer is about half and inch. We thought it was a two layer cake at first! It tasted fine, but just doesn’t look right. We’ll have to drive further; however, cleanliness and professional looking cakes are important.

This place sucks! They slaughtered my baby’s 1st birthday cake. One of the simplest cakes you can ever make… A Mickey Mouse cake and I’m upset

A bit unorganized staff, but fantastic cakes. I’ve ordered two cakes for two very special occasions and they were both delicious. Everyone loved both cakes and I would definitely order from this bakery in the future.

Ok, so I definitely have to tell you everything to understand my frustration! I was very shocked at the service here because my mom would drive from Richton Park to get a cake! But the customer service and bakery knowledge leaves little to be appreciated. I went here to purchase cupcakes for my daughter’s birthday party and wanted an apple design on top of the cupcake. I showed pictures and everything and the lady act like I was ordering a wedding cake! She said we would have to use fondant for the smooth look. Explained I didn’t want that on the cupcakes and she said ok. She said we would have to use it for the leaves then advise me that I’ll have to pay extra for them using fondant?! First thing first, how much extra could I really have to pay for 24 very small cupcake leaves, huh, $ 2??? Expressed we didn’t have to use fondant at all. She said we did for the pictures I was showing her. I pulled the website to show her the tutorial that used only frosting and she says«that picture is fondant»??? Ok lady ! I’m very crafty and could have done the simple smooth red frosting, pretzel stem with a frosting leaf(heck they have the hard frosting leaves at Michael’s) but I wanted to eliminate some things on my list. Well leave it to them to add some stuff on! After about 10 minutes of back and forth, the«decorator», finally seen the light but wait… Only to ask me can I GOBUY the pretzels for the stems and could I GOPRINTOUT the picture and stuff off that I showed them??? Wait a minute bakery that I’m sure is a legit business!!! I come to get rid of a task and you add two things on! So I get the pretzels and tell them I didn’t have time to print out the stuff for the«bakery», I wrote the website on the pretzel bag. Only to be told, «we don’t have no way of looking it up but she’ll hook them up, we got it now» ??? What bakery don’t have access to the Internet to run their business, get emails, cake decorating ideas… I mean I can go on! Just wrong for no reason. I will not return to this bakery and become a part time worker with no pay and Internet hot spot service. Oh yeah, the cupcakes tasted good(1star) and looked ok(1star) but nothing like the pictures :(

Customer service is really poor. When will we learn that treating customers well will get them to be repeat customers. Lack of customer service is why we have trouble staying in business. The owner needs to train her help to teach them business skills. The product may taste great, but the service is horrible!

Ordered a cake on Tuesday and asked for a 3:00 pm pick for Saturday. When I got there was told my cake had not come up yet. Received cake at 4:35. Appearance of the cake was beautiful, but the taste was terrible. cake was hard and not very moist. I am very disappointed. I have ordered cakes from here before and they were great. This one was terrible. I will not be ordering from there again!!!

Update I tasted the cake! Cake itself – moist and chocolate-y. Not too bad kinda good actually. Buttercream frosting – HORRIBLE! Cheap tasting. tasted like the cheap buttercream frosting that come on the ready-made cakes from Jewel, but worse. I actually doubted that she even made the forsting herself because I make better frosting and I’m not a baker.

I’ve been meaning to do this review for some time. I’ve been a few times. Honestly, the cakes that I have had from here are good but the service is not the best,(hence the 1 star). Maybe they don’t even deserve the one star but I still remember being in there, jonesing for some goodies and being thoroughly pissed at the wasted trip. The last time I went(about a month ago) I was disappointeed. Not in the cakes but in the service. After waiting for at least 20 minutes while three people served one lady, another lady comes in. She looks at me and asks if I have been helped. I tell her that I haven’t been helped and that I’m waiting to be helped. Well the youngest of the crew takes care of her right away like I hadn’t been waiting there for damn near half an hour-WTF. I said really, You’re just gonna jump in front of me and you’re just gonna serve her anyway? Needless to say, I walked right out. I don’t play that. I will not be back.

I was disappointed with the service when I went to receive a quote for a client. The sales associate could not tell me flavors and tried to change my order! Ultimately, I did not go with this bakery.

This is what I imagine is the ingredient list in a caramel cupcake from A Piece of Cake: Corn syrup, sugar, stevia, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, sucrose, organic sugar, cane syrup, the insides of pixie sticks, saccharin, honey… and some butter. Frosting is glopped on generously. Their chocolate is old school chocolate, not dark, dense and fudgy, but slightly lighter brown and saaa-weeet. The standout there was their red velvet cupcake, not the cake so much as the superior cream cheese frosting atop — Holy crap is that stuff good. After sampling three I found myself dizzy and taking note of the multiple medical offices along South Western Avenue that specialize in diabetes care.
