Do not waste your time. This restaurant may have been great, but we’ll never know, because it is closed, finished, kaput. Taj Restaurant, also listed at this address. Closed. Building for sale. No body there.

The food was decent, not the best Indian food I’ve had but also not the worst. I ordered takeout and they didn’t include any silverware which is inconvienient when you are staying in a hotel. The food was ready on time and the service was friendly.

Staying at a local campground, we had an urge to get out and get something besides camp chow. So, I asked a local where to get some Indian food as my girlfriend really likes that cuisine. I know, I know… I’ve said it before, take restaurant advice with a grain of salt. Or in this case, a case of salt. Small town Indiana has some incredibly great restaurants where comfort food and farm table favorites are everywhere. Ethnic Indian? So-So. We absolutely LOVE authentic ethnic cooking. When I travel internationally, I look for the funkiest local spots I can. Maybe I’m getting spoiled. For myself, I prefer restaurants that are run by first generation immigrants in larger cities. Having said that, I also prefer to avoid those hat have been ‘Americanized’. So that brings me to Taste of India. While the place has eye appeal and is clean and well ordered, it is lacking in authenticity. Dumbed down for Americans. The food was okay, no specific complaints except they would not bring out an order of Naan. I asked about it and was told it does not come with the dishes we ordered. Even though I was willing to pay a couple bucks extra. The guy at the other table got some with sauces to dip it in. I’ve eaten at Indian//Mid-East/S. Asian places in cities from Seattle to Madison to Boston, Chicago, Miami, San Diego… and many small towns in between, and I understand the need for small town accommodations to taste, the masses demand it, the place would fold in 2 weeks if they didn’t. Therefore I will give it one star higher than what I intended(I wish I could give a 2 ½ star), but don’t think this is the best there is. It’s a great big interesting world out there folks. Be adventurous and enjoy life!

We like this place. Nice cloth table service and great food. Roomy and quiet. Lunch buffet is great. They are hidden behind Franciscan’s Chesterton building off Indiana Boundary Road East of Ind. 49, south of Applebees. Beer and wine. Marsala tea rocks! Needs more signage!

Chicken curry was fantastic. Ordered it medium heat, and it was perfect. Chicken was fresh and tender, bold favors you would expect in a chicken curry! And to top it off a hot lemon hand towel to end the meal.

This review is for yesterday Sunday March 1, 2015. I would like to note for those using the 3rd party like grub hub and maybe the site eat street as well, just call in and do a price check to make sure the prices are correct. I noticed some items were off by a dollar but no big deal in my opinion as The Taste of India’s food is well worth it in my book. Yesterday was the first time we did a delivery with Taste of India before, we have always eaten at the Merrillville, IN location, never the Chesterton location, until yesterday. I happen to use the www. eatstreet, com site( ) just too look at the menu, and then phoned in to place my order. What I ordered for my girlfriend and I were as follows, appetizer: Tandoori Platter, side: Bread Basket, Entrees: Mix Grill and Mix Seafood. I got to tell you some these I have had already and are awesome in my book, from the the spices used to the taste. One thing we have not had before is there Mix Seafood which if you are see food fan I would highly suggest giving that entrée a try. All i got to say this is now another of our favorite locations, even though we have been to the other location, we just love their food. It is always a great experience. I am really happy they do delivery now as well.

This is one of my favorite places to visit! I found this hidden gem awhile back and have to enjoy it every time I return back for visits. I really love the chicken saag and can honestly say I have not found a place that tastes anything like this place where I’ve moved! A great place to enjoy some quality Indian food!

If you have never had Indian food, start here! The food is so good. We had the chickpea masala and mixed grill, which consisted of chicken, lamb, shrimp and salmon and vegetables, comes out steaming and smells so good, Served with rice and a spicy sauce and garlic naan. Delish, they have a tandoori oven so it’s cooked the way Indian food should be prepared. Ordered extra naan to take home, and order of rice pudding for dessert. I live in Holland MI and this was a stop over, I wish I lived closer to come in and try other dishes. So if your new go to the lunch Buffett this will give you the aroma and enjoy many dishes. Great vegetarian selection. I’m a happy girl, look forward to returning.

I love Indian food. It is definitely a comfort food for me. So on a bad day, when I can order pickup for chicken curry AND saag paneer(and two orders of naan… don’t judge) and have it ready in 15 minutes, I am a very happy girl. Not to mention, all of this can be done online, easy breezy. This was especially surprising given that I’m in a little bit of a nowhere town(no offense Chesterton, but you’re right next to Chicago and that’s just not fair for you)…and the Taste of Indian is tucked off the main road and rather difficult to find. On top of a very pleasant ordering experience, I was thrilled with the amount of food received for my meal. I ordered two orders since I figured I’d want some for dinner the next day. What I didn’t realize was that one order is enough for two meals worth! I am not complaining that I now *have* to eat Indian food four meals in a row. That’s one of the best parts is that it gets better with time! Life is just so tough sometimes.

A very good Indian restaurant hid away in small town Chesterton. If you happen to be making a trip to the dunes and want something spicy, or passing by. This place’s Indian cooking is on par with some of the best I have tasted in the Chicago area. Samosas were fresh and not overly greasy, the paneer was soft and all curries were made carefully. They have a tandoor! this means a big authentic advantage for any Indian restaurant. Also, the mango lassi was perfectly balanced. I did find the location to be very odd though, its not too difficult to find, but it looks like its attached to a large red warehouse.

The food is excellent but service pathetic. This is not a five star experience. Good food odd service and complete disconnect on the slightest interest in diners needs. No official wait person one woman and college kid took my order then went out for delivery. The road goes on forever but the oddities continue.

Came here after camping at the dunes for lunch buffet and it was incredibly amazing. Lamb curry was good, mango lassi was the best lassi ever. Samosa and gulab jamun was also good.

I was so glad this place re-opened. The mango lassi is the best I’ve had at any Indian place with a great balance of sweet and tart. Don’t miss it! The naan was wonderfully flaky and light, right out of the oven. I had the lamb curry, which was fairly tender and carried some heat despite the fact that it was supposed to be mild. My friend’s chicken korma, supposed to be seasoned to medium, was milder and delightful. Super tender. The free appetizer of large, thin«chips» was served with some very yummy dip in the form of tamarind chutney. The staff is very attentive and friendly. Prices are very reasonable.

While trying to figure out a good place for vegan/vegetarian food in Chesterton, we happened to remember that Taj had recently reopened! I had visited several years prior, and had not really been impressed with the food or the portions. They are under new ownership now, and have a new chef — and wow can you tell! I came here with my parents, who are vegan, and both our server and the owner(who came to check on us a couple of times) were very helpful in making sure we knew what was vegan on the menu. We shared samosas, chana masala, aloo gobhi, and dal tadka — all were pretty much amazing. I also had some garlic naan(not vegan), and my parents had some roti(vegan). I was honestly pretty happy to have the entire basket of garlic naan all to myself, and have since been wishing I had garlic naan to eat with all of my meals. The service was also excellent. I’m really excited that this place has reopened and is so damned good.

This place was first opened several years ago and I was in love with it. I remember that I had forgotten what time they opened and spent an hour in my car, parked outside, waiting for them to open. They don’t have too many options in their buffet but it is really good food. There are a total of 12 items on the buffet but this isn’t much if you count the papadum(our version of chips) and soup(watered down dhal which I never touch.) Very good food, kind of an odd spot for the restaurant. This is a great place to go and try Indian fodd, not many people in this are have been exposed to Indian food previously and it is nice to see them dip their toes in this cuisine.

I was very impressed with Taj. A man who I presume to be the manager suggested the Lamb Bhuna Hyderabadi.(I had to look up the menu to spell that.) He asked how spicy I wanted it and made it to my specifications. They got it exactly right. I also got some garlic naan and lamb samosas. I didn’t order in advance, so I had to wait for a short time. I was given a comfortable place to sit and offered a drink, which was nice. Everything was packaged well, so it didn’t get soggy or cold on the way home, which is a big deal for me. I can’t speak to the authenticity, but everything was delicious. The portions were big enough that I had lunch for the next day, too. The kitchen is open until 9:30 pm every day, which makes Taj a great alternative to fast food when I’m getting home late from work. I’ll definitely be back.

Love Love Love this place. I’ve never thought of myself as a fan of Indian food but we can’t get enough of Taj. I’ve had the Shrimp Tikka Masala, and the Malai Kofta and love both of them so much that it has stopped me from exploring further. Make sure to get some Naan Bread to soak up some of the amazing sauces.
