What’s that? You’ve had your fill of festivals in Charlotte? You’re so mad, you just can’t take it any more? Well, head out of town. Head out of state, in fact. All the way to Chester, SC. Never heard of Chester, SC? You might have passed the sign on the Interstate. But there isn’t much more to the place.
It is the home of the Romans Revenge, however, apparently the second-​place finisher in their category in the Punkin Chunkin contest. What is a punkin? To most, it’s a pumpkin. To these folks, it’s ammunition. They load it up, sound a siren, and start the process of chunkin (that would be throwing) the thing. A ways. A long ways, in fact.
Think catapult. A wood beam, metal structure and even some duct tape. It’s pretty cool. I just wish that it lasted longer and happened more often, because the rest of the fair doesn’t offer much. The hayride from the highway to the punkin chunkin is about as good as it gets.
