Just returned from a lovely and much-needed weekend getaway while staying at the Inn at the Canal. Given that Chesapeake City is such a small but interesting and quaint town, the inn has a great location in the historical area right by the canal. We stayed in Back Creek room and had a great direct view of the water and the Chesapeake Inn Restaurant and Marina. There’s cable TV, free wifi, and an AC that you can adjust the temperature for. The tub is small but has an interesting shape — elevated bottom and circular around the edges in the back. It’s designed for you to sit up and back while taking a bath. A bubble bath is always a great idea — but the tub isn’t really big enough for two people. A yummy two-course breakfast is served between 8 and 10am each day. And you get a glass of house juice and coffee with it. There are complimentary snacks(cookies and biscotti), apples, bananas, coffee, tea, water, and soda in the lobby/dining room. There’s another room with bookshelves, armchairs, and a coffee table with magazines. The entire house is 19th-century Victorian style. You also get a peek into the spacious chef’s kitchen that’s usually locked in the back when you come down for breakfast in the morning. There’s a round table by the fireplace, and two by the windows. The only thing that I could find fault in during my stay was the occasional bug visits in my room at night. I freaked out once when one landed right onto my hands while I was typing on the computer in the dark. I know they’re mostly harmless, but it could be a little freaky. From the inn you can pretty much walk anywhere in town on this side of the river. We took a stroll to the C & D Canal Museum, visited the Canal Creamery though it was closed till the summer, and wandered to Bohemia Café & Bakery, Tap Room, Chesapeake Inn, as well as a handful of the boutiques and stores around. If you must cancel your reservation do it two weeks in advance. There’s no deposit needed in advance, and you can pay in full upon arrival with the three security digits of the credit card with which you made the reservation. Bob and Carol has a dog named Sassy although she’s usually not around since they’re concerned about some guests who may be allergic. We were lucky to run into her once in the middle of the day probably since they thought we’d left. Try to chat with the innkeepers — they may have insider tips for your trip!

We had a wonderful, romantic weekend at the Inn at the Canal. Chef Bob is a wonderful host — the room was really nice, and breakfast was a real treat.
