This is a small market located in Bellingham Square in Chelsea, MA.(About a 5 minute walk from my house). This store is primarily geared toward Chelsea’s large Latino population, so the groceries are geared toward Latino cultures. They do have some regular ‘staples’ and what not too, but not always everything. BUT I typically go here when I’m out of something, and I don’t want to run to Market Basket. Location: I don’t think this could get any better than where it is. IT’s right in the heart of Bellingham Square in downtown Chelsea. Also it’s just before a major bus transfer point in town. Store: Nice but OLD. You could tell this was a 1940s-era market by the copper ceiling(painted over), and the styling of the building. BUT the owner has updated the interior a bit in recent years(new signage, re-organizing the store, fixing his coolers, etc) So it looks nice. Selection: Pretty good for a Latin themed grocery store. For me(a white guy) they have most of what I’d ever go in here for(cheese, milk, veggies, meat, canned something, etc). The produce is kind of meh… Some of it looks like it’s on the verge of going bad(no joke). So I often have to dig thru piles of veggies to find one that ISN’T going to turn. But again, it’s all about convenience, so I just deal with it. This store actually has decent meats. Of course many of the cuts are Latino-style cuts(lots of chicken!), but they have some regular main stays(chops, steak, etc) and whatever I’ve bought for meat there, as always been good. This store also has a deli, I’ve never gotten anything there because I don’t like the brand they carry(and the one time I tried to get something done, the employee looked at me like I had six heads and didn’t come help). But it’s there if I so need Deli meat. The main part of the store is the canned goods, box stuff, flour, mayo, etc etc(all the non-perishables) is a good variety. The gondola’s go up very high and they have a ton of different products squished into that small store. Price: Prices are kinda meh also. Some of the produce… for what you are getting. is very pricey. And I would never do ALL my shopping here because its just too pricey, however I do see folks load up suitcases/granny carts/carts up with tons of bags so apparently a lot of people do their full shopping trip here, so it might be a wash. Staff: I’ve never had a problem with the staff(except the Deli counter incident), the cashiers will speak English to me and are very polite about everything. My biggest three biggest complaints about this store is… If i come in with my backpack or manbag, I have to give it to the service desk. AND the produce could be better. AND I wish they’d carry more American-style bread products(you can’t get Wonder-style bread here!) Overall I’m glad this store is around the corner. They may not have everything but they are certainly cheaper than Tedeschi’s or schlepping over to Market Basket. It serves a purpose, which is why I’m going to give it four stars!
