Save-A-Lot Food Stores

Not bad. First time here in a Boston Save a Lot. Selection of veggies available. I forgot if I saw fruit selections or not. Its November so… maybe they didnt have as much. I come to these lower end shopping places more for fresh things because it is generally cheaper.

I’ve shopped at this store a lot over the years. But a recent experience made me want to speak out. I bought some toothpaste — thinking it only cost a Dollar. Its always cost a $ 1 in the past. Not anymore — they set the signs up deceptively, to confuse the buyer. The toothpaste actually cost $ 3. After checking out, and catching the mistake, the lady knew what I was about to ask, seeing toothpaste in hand; this clearly was not the first incident of someone thinking it was one price, and then getting another price.
I went back and got the other brand — but was dismayed to find it cost even more than $ 3! I finally just told them to show me, where exactly, the AIM toothpaste (for a $ 1) was! We go over to the section, and none is to be found!
So this entire endeavor was a wasted effort — with the store relying on buyers not noticing, that there is a significant price difference between these different toothpastes. I don’t know if its intentional or not — but it certainly is a known problem, and one that hasn’t been fixed yet.
The shame of it is, this store does have good prices. But this one incident really leaves me questioning their entire selection. I hope they fix this, and make the prices of the different toothpastes clearer — because right now, I’m really upset, and feel like I was nearly ripped off.

I go here when it is a big shopping weekend (Holidays or Big Events) because this store never has more than 3 people in it…
I Imagine its because it never has anything decent of name brand, but the things I often buy here are ok, so Ill stick with them! The meats are cheap & fairly priced… I often buy the Pork Shoulder for my Pulled Pork or Pernil (Spanish Roasted Pork).
Bring your own bags & be prepared to hear the Cashiers life story… She seems harmless I just hear way too much everytime Im there & she is ALWAYS there, this poor girl works her ass off…

The Save-​A-​Lot chain of food stores are great for what they aspire to be; which is an amazingly cheap place for people without a lot of money to by their groceries. The prices are really amazingly cheap. The selection is simple, the brand names are thin; lots of good quality though. Lots of amazingly cheap can goods, cereals, grains, vegetables. Bananas, for example, are 3lbs for a dollar here while at hay market and market basket they are currently more like 2lbs for a dollar. It appears they get a lot of the products from companies in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The breads and such are pretty good and cheap too. At this on I find the meat selection thin, but reasonably priced. This isn’t too far from the amazing huge cheap market basket; but I still find I go here to stock up on a lot of staples. For what they sell it is cheaper than market basket, and that’s not easy.
