Hole-in-the-wall Salvadorian eatery on a busy stretch of Broadway in downtown Chelsea. The art deco architecture driving through the neighborhood is a plus, as are the friendly locals. Ordered chicken tacos and a couple of pupusas, loroco and pork/cheese for a quick lunch. Hot, crisp, dry corn chips came out in 2 min with a salsa fresca that popped at every scoop. The pupusas were gooey and full of corny goodness. The drinks were cold — the ubiquitous Jarritos lime soda and a tamarind colored juice that reminded us of jack-fruit in a non stinky way. But the tacos were truly the king — with fresh, tender meat redolent of the bbq, fresh veggies, a slice of turnip and lime for each taco, and warm tortillas to cover it all up. The service was prompt and pleasant, I’ll be back!

If your a girl looking for some attention, just walk down this street and you’ll be checked out by the lurking local men and will hear shouts from all directions. and maybe even a date request. Entering King Tacos. the same occured, just in a more discreet form of wispering sweet nothings across the place while your are eating… Get past that and you’ve got a good meal ahead of you. Now on to the food… The tacos and tortas were great. For $ 5, the torta is a large sandwich filled with your choice of meat, avocado, egg, and mayo, then grilled to perfection. The tacos are around $ 2 and made in double shells, packed with filling. They make them basic so be sure to ask for additions like sour cream or salsa with your plate. The free house made chips/salsa on the table were great. Waitresses were nice and versed in English but primarily spoke Spanish to the customers. This is obviously a no frills joint catering to the local Mexican and El Salvadorian population with both flags hung proudly on the wall.

I just moved to Chelsea and LOVE the many local food options from Central and South America. All traditional and amazing food. King Taco is another one of these. Food: A mix of Mexican and Ecuadorian style entrees. (NOTE: No Pico de Gallo! Maybe try to ask for some sort of salsa. I missed that.) 1. Taquitos: Moist chicken in fried tortilla, white rice, small salad with avocado, tomato, and radish. Side of sour cream. Crunchy, almost too much but better than too soft! 2. Gordita: ORDERTHESE above all else! Sandwich like food. Each of the sides of the«bun» were fried flat breads. Very soft and savory, yet with the perfect crunch. The inside was cubed meat, a spread that included fresh cilantro with a white, crème base to it. Delicious and something I haven’t tried before at a Central or South American restaurant. 3. Nachos: Mmm. Good for nachos. But order the gordita. 4. WITHEVERYORDER: Pickled carrots with jalapenos. These are a little hot, and are actually pretty good. 5. Mango con Leche: A blend of fruit purée and milk(can do with water instead of milk, but I like the milk) that creates a foamy refreshing beverage. A must have. Ambiance: 1. Busy, understaffed but friendly. 2. Time is on THEIR side. No need to rush them though. Good food takes time. 3. Clean and tidy despite it’s worn look. 4. Lively. Looks like there is life in the restaurant, and it is a hub for local activity as neighbors pass in and out. 5. Mainly a Spanish speaking area, prepare to use what little you remember from those classes years ago. Waitress spoke English, as others in the area most likely do. Just first language is Spanish. Location: 1. Despite being a main street in Chelsea, there is usually something available directly on it. 2. The meter enforcement isn’t insane as waiting in the bushes like their downtown partners. 3. SAFETY: Chelsea is the 2nd highest crime city in the state. Bring GPS’s with you and wipe off suction rings as a precaution, lock door and leave nothing visible. With com men sense, a great time can be had in this area. Price: These restaurants offer a lot of food for little money. With fruit drinks and full entrees, I don’t often go over $ 20 for 2 people. Overall: GO! Have a good time! And look around. There are plenty other places on the same street that deserve a visit!
