What a fun place! We were visiting some friends in Charlottesville and decided to drop into Three Notch’d for some beers. Each of the four got a flight, which was VERY reasonably priced. 61 oz beers for $ 7(unless you added in some of the more expensive beers, my six beer flight ended up at $ 9 — still very reasonable)! They have little laminated sheets, where you can write the beers you want and they place the beers in the corresponding circle next to the name. I enjoyed several of the beers I tried, and we loved the experience, too. They offer some snacks(including chips and queso) and some people bring in games to play. I was jealous of the group that brought in a board game! What could be more fun than playing a board game in a brewery with good friends for several hours?!

I’ve been here a couple of times. Once on a recruiting trip where the company rented out the back room and we did a beer tour and some private tastings. Another time with a friend just to try out a few beers. It is really easy to do tastings here and I really enjoyed the beer varieties. I got a flight of 6 beers of $ 7. What a great deal! If you get a chance to do the tour, i’d definitely go for it. It has an interesting story and our tour guide was really good about answering our questions and diving deeper into things we wanted specifics about. Unfortunately they don’t serve food –but it seemed like you could bring your own in if you wanted to. For the recruiting event we had catered barbeque for the group. I’ll definitely be back to try some more beers and bring some more friends. It was great for a group. They also have plenty of tvs if you want to come kick back and watch a game.

Three Notch’d in one of four breweries actually located in Cville, not out on the Brew Ridge Trail. I really enjoy Three Notch’d’s beer, but I don’t stop into the location often enough because it’s not as close to the downtown mall as the others. They have very high quality beer that all beer lovers would enjoy. You can’t go wrong with a sampler or trying one of their seasonal beers. My boyfriend is a huge fan of the Jacks Java Espresso Stout. When I’ve been there, there is sometimes a food truck outside – I’m not sure if this is a consistent thing though. Definitely check out Three Notch’d if you haven’t yet!

If you like craft beer and creative flavors with a chill atmosphere, you’ll like Three Notch’d. This place is hop-central for the sheer variety that they carry. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed sampling a few on tap before selecting our beers. We both agreed that the Espresso Stout was awesome for how rich and dark it was, the pumpkin was good with just enough natural pumpkin flavor, and Michelle’s White Wedding was great for how light it was. The service was good and the bartender was easy to talk to and didn’t mind answering our questions about the different brews. We also admired how generous the serving sizes per price for individual drinks as well as the flights were. You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck here! The space itself is – as many previous reviews state — a cool space. It’s part of the Old Monticello Dairy building on Preston which gives it it’s organic warehouse feel. There is a nice patio out front as well as standing tables and bar stools throughout with an added back room with chalk wall, seated tables, and board games. Lastly, make note that this place does not carry food but they do tend to have food trucks outside on the weekends. They’ll also let you bring your food inside and if you have well behaved dogs, they can come too!

Epic brewery that’s easily on par with anything you can find in California, Oregon, or Colorado. Well, except for Russian River in Santa Rosa, cause Three Notch’d doesn’t serve delicious pizza. But I digress. Other than that, super cool ambiance, flights of 4 for $ 5 or 6 for $ 7, plus growler refills for $ 10…ish with a Three Notch’d growler(costs $ 5 and is totally worth it). Try the staples(Hydraulion, an Irish Red that won a medal at GABF in Denver in 2014, or 40 Mile IPA) or the seasonals on tap(Liebestrank, a raspberry stout«love potion» that totally lives up to its name, or «Man’s Best Friends,» an espresso stout aged in bourbon barrels from Breckinridge Distillery in Colorado). You won’t regret coming here: it’s a bit off the Brew Ridge Trail but so totally worth every moment you spend here.

i am not a beer drinker, as im more into spirits. that being said, i will still try a beer. unfortunately, for this place, i just came back from a trip to wisconsin, where i tried a ton of really tasty beers and this one just did not cut it. bf, who loves beer, thought it was pretty good, so there is where i drew my mental line the bartender was nice but didnt have a real good feel for what kind of flavor i might like. i did a flight and disliked all of the beer samples, except the oatmeat stout which i thought was ok did not try the food found the ambiance a bit strange, looking out at an intersection and staring at a sign for ‘martin’s hardware’ was not really cup of tea. this place might do better if it had a rooftop parking was no problem overall, i would pass.

I’m generally not a beer drinker. Hops? No thanks. While my boyfriend is a Belgian aficionado, I tend to stick to wine. I’ll take a sip here and there from him and most of the time, I’ll need a nice bold Bordeaux to wash away the flavors in my mouth. That is, until I tried Three Notch’d. I can honestly say I have not had a single beer I disliked. Sure, I liked some more than others, but they brew such a unique array of flavors that you are pretty much guaranteed to find one you’ll like. Here are some of my favorites: «Jack’s Java» Espresso Stout — This was my very first Three Notch’d beer. How can I not love chocolate and coffee flavors in a beer?!(They are my two favorite things in the world.) «Oats McGoats» Oatmeal Stout — I love a hearty oatmeal stout and I love this one even more because of the chocolate undertone. Delicious! «I Want to Ride my Pineapple» Radler — This is seriously perfect for a warm summer picnic. Or on a tropical island somewhere «Biggie S’Mores» Imperial Stout — Rich and creamy. This imperial stout is made with 80 boxes of Honey Maid Graham Crackers! It’s like a dessert. AH I WANTSOMENOW! «Notch’d Your Everyday Hefe» — Probably one of my favorites. It’s so smooth and has a slight bubble gum flavor. Look out for Three Notch’d! They are constantly doing pop ups all over Nova and hopefully in DC soon too.

Solid basic brews, but what I really appreciate them for is their more eccentric beers. They had so many delicious and unique sounding beers on tap it was really hard for me to choose which one I wanted to start with! We went on a Thursday night and they were actually unveiling a new braggot style beer that was made with mead from a local meadery in Richmond. It was awesome! I also tried the espresso stout-wow! They have a patio, the taproom and a little room off to the side with tables that was much quieter for us to sit with our baby(yes we’re the people with a baby at the bar). I also noticed that you can bring your well-behaved dogs inside to the taproom too!

The espresso stout is dark dark delicious. A strong bitter espresso taste to it. It goes down smooth and has a very small head. It resembles espresso more than most of them espresso stouts I’ve had in the past. I look forward to trying their next beer.

Our last stop in Cville and what a way to end the trip. We ended up parking on the street in front of the place. There’s a nice patio area out front with a few fire pits that must be nice to use on a cool night. Inside, the place has a chalk room where a whole wall is a chalkboard for you to write, draw, or do whatever to your heart’s content. We headed straight for the bar and did a flight of 6 beers that my boyfriend and I got to choose. My selections were of the lighter beers, the boyfriend chose more of the stouts. We enjoyed what we chose while we sat watching what sports were on TV. I also enjoyed the posters they had of the different beers they’ve made with the logo incorporated into each design. The place even has an impressive collection of growlers from all breweries all over the state. Overall, it’s a nice place to enjoy some beers and relax. Definitely a place to check out versus driving out another hour to find the more«famous» Virginia breweries.

In the crowded Charlottesville craft brew market, Three Notch’d Brewing Company differentiates itself from the competition with several excellent beers. One of the newest beer options, Three Notch’d opened in August 2013 and developed a reputation for bold flavorful beers. The tasting room is modest, located right next to a popular Irish bar. Parking can be a pain — if you’re lucky you can find a spot out front… if unlucky you can park in an unlit parking lot behind said Irish Bar. You have to love the look this brewery is cultivating with its excellent bottle artwork and unique names. It’s not just selling good beer but it’s brand, and so far they seem to be very successful. Okay so it’s cool — so how was the beer? You can taste a few beers in the sampler which you can select from the list above the bar. These are generous pours and an excellent starting point. With so many options, it’s best to just pick what you know to start or ask the bartender(if you get a nice bartender — ours wasn’t in a good mood despite the bar not being too busy). I’m not a huge fan of really hoppy beers — so naturally I gravitated towards the Dunkelweizen. Overall, if you’re a craft beer drinker you will love Three Notch’d. While they didn’t have that one or two exceptional beers to get to five stars, there’s enough variety here that you’ll find something you’ll like.

Really Love this place. We have stopped in several times on our many travels to NC. This is usually a perfect half way stopping point between DC and NC. They have some very delicious beers and friendly staff. The tasting flight is a great deal! You get to choose beers from the list to taste for a very small price. Their space is inviting and fun. There are separate rooms for hanging out, one with a tv and the other just for chat. You can also bring in your own food, many people(including us) order something to go from one of the surrounding restaurants to go and enjoy it at the brewery while we whet our beer thirst. So far, some of our favorite brews have been the Hydraulion, No Veto, Of By For, Brother Barnabus, and the Elated Coconut Porter. Oh and the Gradyator was DELICIOUS! We have tasted so many, and they are all good. Sadly, we cannot taste all of their beers/new releases because that would require us to drive three hours to do that, but we try to visit every 2 – 3 months. I would definitely try this place out if you love beer and live close by.

3 Notch’d is my favorite brewery in Cville. They have really great beers and an amazing range of styles that they are very good at. I really enjoyed the 40 Mile IPA, Hydraulion Red, Ghost Pale Ale and No Veto Brown Ale from their core group of beers. I also loved the Biggie Smores Imperial Stout, Midnight Vortex Black IPA, Hysteria Imperial Indian Brown Wheat Ale and the Fandom of the Hopera Double Red IPA from the speciality beers the last time I visited. I enjoyed the casual laid back environment and the outdoor space out front is nice when it’s warm. The servers were all very knowledgeable about each of the beers. They usually have food trucks, but we just grabbed Stix from across the street and brought it to 3NB to eat there while we drank.

Understaffed with only one bartender on a Saturday afternoon. Was excited to try the Biggie S’mores imperial stout, but it was overly sweet. The No Veto English Brown Ale is definitely their best brew.

This was one of our last C’ville area brewery tours, and one of the best. We got a 6 sample tray, and were pleased with most of them. We’re pretty big beer snobs, and loved the hefe and java porter. There seems to be a good food truck schedule, and they sell chips and salsa– literally a bag of chips and jar of salsa, lol. The atmosphere is low key, a good amount of seating, and nice patio when it’s nice out.

Three Notch’d is a 5 star brewery by all accounts. We visited on a Sunday evening, and after a couple of email inquiries about tours, one of the founders had generously agreed to meet us for a private tour. They even let us hang out after closing hours. Between the quality of beers available in the tasting room, the innovative and rigorous marketing, and the creative, down to earth guys running this place, I can’t say that I’ve ever been to a better brewery than Three Notch’d. I will continue to visit and support these guys as they climb the ladder with their exceptional and creative work. Not only are they award winning(and after only one year in business) but they are down right enjoyable. If you’re wondering which brewery to check out in the central Virginia area, don’t bother brewery hopping– this is a one stop shop that is sure to impress. Try the 10* Farmers, it’s incredible! Better yet, just try any one of their beers. I think I’ve made myself clear, this brewery is amazing.

How is there only 11 other reviews of the best brewery in town? Why I am fan: 1) High-quality brews with variety in flavors/types: My top 2 are the light Trader Saison because I am a lover of Belgian-style ales, and the rich Oats McGoats Oatmeal Stout. 2) Functional flights: Choose any six on tap and they place the glasses onto a card that labels each so you don’t get lost in which is which. 3) Affordable price, especially for growlers: Cannot beat the cost. Brought a friend from Michigan here and he stocked up on that oatmeal stout after trying it. 4) Cool space: Historic building with charm. When I first visited, there wasn’t much seating but they’ve added a ton more so that there are cozy little nooks. 5) Involved in community events/causes: I see Three Notch’d hosting or sponsoring everything from brewing competitions charity benefits. Be aware that they do not have food but do often have food trucks on weekends and nights. Check out their Facebook page before you go to see what’s available.

Drinking craft beer in this building brings back a lot of memories. I was a UVa student in the mid 90’s, during the first explosion of craft beer and breweries. Charlottesville, being the trendy town that it is, became a great town for craft beer and tap houses, and spawned a few small brewpubs during this time. The first was Blue Ridge Brewing Company, Virginia’s first brewpub, located in the Starr Hill area of Charlottesville. They closed down in 1999, sold the facility, and the new owner changed the name of the beer to — you guessed it — Starr Hill. And then there was Monticello Brewing Company, located in the same building that Three Notch’d is in today. I lived just up the street and would often come to MBC to enjoy their excellent selection of brews. The owner(Vince) always made me feel at home there, and his son and brewmaster(Kevin) made some pretty tasty brew. I’m not sure exactly when MBC closed, but knew they were no longer around. When I saw Three Notch’d beer at various C’ville restaurants I looked them up, saw the address, and knew EXACTLY where they were. The building that Three Notch’d is in is known as the Old Monticello Dairy building, and has local history that goes far beyond brewing. I’m glad someone took over this space and is making good use of it. The interior works with the charm of the old building, and the décor is very minimal in itself, with the bulk of the seating being low-sitting bench-like structures with mini tables shaped like tree stumps to serve as stands for their flights. It’s a very cool looking place — they put much more thought into interior design than other breweries. I also like the way that you do a flight. You take a tasting card, fill out which six beers you want on the card, and they put the card on a tray and set the beers in the corresponding spot. They typically have 9 or so beers to choose from. The beer is pretty straight-forward stuff. Nothing is extremely inventive, but they are good, crisp, and clean-tasting representatives of their respective styles. Of the beers I tried, I generally preferred the darker beers — the«Oats McGoats» Oatmeal Stout is not only one of the best beer names I’ve heard in a while, but also a great stout. But I think I liked Jack’s Java Stout a bit better. I’m typically not a brown ale fan, but i really liked their«No Veto» Brown Ale. I am a saison fan, and definitely liked«The Trader». Three Notch’d is definitely a welcome and worthy addition to the growing«Brew Ridge Trail» family. And it was great to be drinking beer in that building again. I’m sure it won’t be the last time.

6 months and counting, this surprisingly brand spanking new brewery is up and running and quite lovely to behold even if it’s just starting out. I was surprised how organized they are and not to mention the variety of beers they have on tap that are actually tasty. Everything is well thought out from their recipes, to the welcoming tasting room, to the actual brewery which boasts a state of the art filtration system that guarantees delicious water and plenty of room for expansion. And since they are a brewery and not a restaurant, they have the foresight to have food trucks outside for food purchases… stone wood-fired pizza anyone? Yum! The guys in the tasting room are knowledgeable and helpful, they are eager to share their love of beer with consumers and even more excited about their brewery! It’s great to feel the excitement and taste it in the beer too. The prices are reasonable for a brewery starting out, so you better get in while you can to take advantage, because I can foresee these guys getting big and prices eventually going up. The variety is solid and their flagship IPA is going to go far. I wouldn’t mind visiting again, worth the trip!
