Classic upscale pub. Great location in Charlottesville. Fish and chips not the best I’ve had. Salmon excellent.

Limited menu due to restaurant week, but everything I ordered was pretty darn good. Had the corn chowder as my first course and the lamb dish as my second course. All was very flavorful although I have to admit that everything could have been served hotter and the lamb was just a *little* tough. That said, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place.

I understand that gastropubs are not the most health conscious choice, however, I have to voice my displeasure with my most dissatisfying experience during restaurant week last weekend. My meal consisted of some greens with bacon, pork chops, and a peach crisp dessert. All were subpar. Everything was super salty. After having lived in England for a month, I am well aware that our friends across the pond like their food greasy and salty. So in that sense, H&H stayed truthful to their salty ways. But this was over the top. It was as if they steeped their greens in brine, cooked it in salt water, and just in case I hadn’t exceeded my sodium intake for the day, have some dried bacon for good measure. The pork chops were dry, and of course salty. Cooked well done, to a point where I had to take a swig of beer just to swallow, this was an affront to the poor swine that had sacrificed itself for my gorging pleasure. Hoping that the meal might be redeemed by the peach crisp, I was once again sorely disappointed. Sour, and yes, salty, the dessert sat half eaten. Granola was undercooked and the peaches tasted tart in a bad way. I don’t like giving 1 star reviews, but when I’m forced to call it a night at 730pm simply because I feel bloated to the point of shutting it down, the rating speaks for itself.

Looking for a place for a large group. They were very accommodating. The service was slow for a pre fixe dinner. We had a party of 8 that ended staying. I had fried grit fritters and they were very bland. It had a bacon jam on the plate which added some flavor but the portion was small. For dinner, I had leg of lamb. It was over cooked for my taste. It should have been medium rate but was on the medium done side. Dessert was a lemon tart. I got 3 small bite size lemon tart. It was tasty but I was expecting a individual portion size.

I was looking for a dog-friendly restaurant and I figured that I couldn’t go wrong with a place that has«hound» in its name? They have a nice patio right on Main Street and the server(Paul) was quick to give the dog some attention and a bowl of water. We ordered the Fish & Chips(w/plenty of fries) and a salad with fresh tuna. Both plates were very good and the service was attentive. The dog had a good time too.

Sitting on the patio, enjoying a very tasty Dogfish Head India Brown Ale. The turkey club was one of the best I’ve ever had. We’ll be back!

Great little place. They could give more butter for the bread, but their shepherd’s pie was irresistible! Great place for groups too! They were awesome to my youth participants. I dig this place!

Cute place. Nice brunch menu and huge patio seating area. Having its own parking lot was a plus for this out of towner. Server was attentive and nice. Food was fine. I just had an omelette, so… Homefries were very good though. I enjoyed the ambience and was able to relax comfortably while dining by myself.

Leaving Carter’s Mountain, my boyfriend and I wanted I eat at a cute place to top off our day. At this point in our travels we were«hangry». Settled for the Horse and Hound based on the cute name. Absolutely horrible food experience. The waitress was great! Sweet and endearing, knew that the food sucked. Had a crab cake that tasted like nothing but filler, more like a bread cake with old bay. Kale salad with apricots was nothing to write home about. To finish it off, the water tasted like dirt and my boyfriend burger flavor was HOTDOG. Exactly like a hot dog. Save your money. Please.

Yuck. My mother’s pork chop was undercooked and her appetizer, oyster, was… i don’t know how to describe this thing but, a little mushy. My main dish was bucco oro? It tasted like.wilderness. it smelled bad and tasted bd as well. I don’t recommend this restaurant at all. Not worth your money.

My boyfriend and I stopped into Horse and Hound Gastropub for a Friday night date night. The seating was very limited because a couple was hosting their rehearsal dinner there, so there was slight wait. We were seated in the area up a couple of steps, and it didn’t really have the greatest ambiance up there. The booths seemed like they would be nice and cozy though. They had a decent beer selection, even a «Game of Thrones» beer, so that made my boyfriend happy. We started off with the zucchini, corn, and herb fritters. They came with what seemed to be salad dressing, which made for a weird pairing, but the pepper jelly was great with fritters. We both ordered the two piece fish and chips. It was a very good sized portion, which really filled me up. I enjoyed the fish and chips, but the atmosphere led me to take it down to three stars because it just felt awkward inside.

We ate dinner here the day after Christmas. It was not crowded which was nice — it’s one of those spaces that seems like it could be noisy when it’s full of diners. All the staff was friendly and the waitress answered our questions with no hemming and hawing or «I’ll have to check with the kitchen”-type comments. The draft beer selection(13 taps) was varied and excellent and carried some local beers. The pricing is amazing, actually — you can buy pitchers of your favorites and not break the bank. The food was FANTASTIC. We shared the bacon-wrapped dates(a little pricey for what you get, but delicious) and our entrees were the kale salad with seared tuna and the shrimp and grits. The prices overall are reasonable. We skipped dessert. It would be great if the beer list could be kept up to date on the Website and the FB page. This is the internet age, people. We’ll definitely be back!

Another disappointment of highly rated locally owned Charlottesville restaurants. Took kids & Grandkids on Friday night. Strangely not busy at all. The much touted barBque ribs were mostly bones & gristle with the tough membrane still attached. The burgers were tough and small. The kale salad with salmon was ok, but a smallish and overlooked piece of fish. The only saving grace was the French fries & the local craft beers were good. Wait staff was good & helpful.

Friday night special is ribs. Totally recommend the ribs. Totally. Fries come with by default, they’re good, but not special. Service was disjointed, but it was the first week back on campus at Virginia, so I’ll give them a pass. The patio was packed and looked great, but I was one of only 3 tables seated inside. I was cool with that, but it was like eating in a library. No music, everyone speaking in hushed tones. Waiter turned up music from bar, didn’t help. Homemade deserts are a huge bonus. Owner’s wife’s a pastry chef. I had chocolate peanut butter brownie… A la mode. Four things that are fantastic by themselves, but together will blow your damn head off they are so good. H&H worth a try, though if I’m ever back in C’ville, I’ll probably try someplace new.

The Horse & Hound is not a gastropub. No way, no how. The beer list is too small, the menu is confused and lacks focus, and the food is poorly executed. I’m taking away 1 star because the Tuesday special was being offered on a Thursday, leading me to believe it didn’t sell on Tuesday… or Wednesday. The second star is invisible, much like the celeriac purée that should have been served with my scallops. What I received instead was definitely smashed potatoes drowning in butter. Third star supernovad because of the horror that they call The Haystack sandwich. I am leaving one star because of the huge patio, and another for the Horse and Hound Belgian Dubbel brewed especially for the establishment by Three Notch’d Brewing Co. I love a good gastropub, so I was really disappointed by my experience at Horse & Hound. My full review with pictures can be found here.

I wasn’t expecting much after looking at the mixed Unilocal reviews. That being said I was presently surprised! The Zucchini, Corn, Herb Fritters were delicious with the creamy mustard dipping sauce but what won me over was the 8 oz. Certified Angus Filet. I ordered it medium-rare and it was like butter. Every bite was succulent. Also the red mashed potatoes was an amazing pairing, full of flavor but not overpowering the dish. The service was a little slow but ordering a beer at the bar before you’re seated helps.

Meh. That pretty much sums up my experience. It was fairly late on a weeknight, but that’s not an excuse. I had the kale salad with salmon. It wasn’t bad, but was nothing to get excited about either. Maybe I’d try something else the next time, but I’m in no hurry to return. Service was good though. I don’t remember our waiter’s name but he doesn’t deserve to get lumped into my assessment of «meh.»

Love this place! I went there for a catering tasting($ 20) in looking for a wedding caterer. Everything was so delicious. The bacon wrapped figs were sweet and melted in your mouth. The ham biscuits reminded me of my grandmother’s. The apple cider chicken was so delicious. It was a little heavy, but worth the splurge. I loved the roasted chicken with brussel sprouts. It was so tasty without feeling overwhelming. They even make their own wedding cakes here.
