This is a beautiful place to visit in the fall. You’ll get a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance and it’s a lovely, short country lane drive away from Monticello. The tour was enlightening and the staff were all friendly, dedicated people.
As an added bonus, I got to see a newborn baby lamb (1 day old) on the small farm (housing cows, chickens, sheep) and I learned a bit about textile making from Russell – that was cool!

I think anytime we have an opportunity to look or visit history, particularly our Pressidents, we should. We need to be reminded of our early history. The doctrines and formation of our country. Ash Lawn-​Highland is certainly worth the visit. There are a lot of details that I don’t want to write about simply because of spoiling a number of building surprises. We had a really good guide, very knowable of the land, buildings and history of of the site. The the out buildings and land are really nice. The garden is lovely and the trees are magnificent. The original home is more like an average man’s home than you could imagine. However, certain pieces of furniture are rather presidential. I absolutely loved walking the grounds. The shoppe is nice. I would close by saying James Monroe is buried in Richmond’s Hollywood cemetery. I recommend a visit to the Highland.
