WRFX 99.7 FM The Fox

The problem with any classic rock station programmed by a megalithic conglomerate is that it is sterile and repetitive to the core.
Charlotte is, and always has been, since the early 1970’s, a very, very conservative radio town. The only really good rock radio stations I can remember here were WAYS/​WROQ, run by the Kaplans in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. They were far from sterile, but they were still repetitive. At least they had really outrageous personalities.
Yeah, John Boy and Billy (mornings on ‘RFX) are long-​time, big-​time successful. On a good day, they’re funny. On an average day, they’re Corporate Rednecks. But sometimes that’s all you need… if you’re a redneck, or in that sort of mood.
Oh, once upon a time, from 1973– 1979, here, there was 10-​watt, student-​run WDAV at Davidson, but you could only hear us from Mooresville to Huntersville. We played anything anyone wanted to hear, so long as it was barely legal and the Davidson executive staff were asleep. Then they woke up and took the station away from the students and went all classical, all the time. Bummer. (Hey, I’m a Davidson alum who was there; I can say such things now.)
WRFX seemingly suffers from sterility because scientific analysis of this radio market tells them that they should only play a certain grouping of records that reached certain heights on the charts in the period of the 60’s through the 90’s. This means the selection of artists and catalogs is very narrow. Listen long enough, and you hear the same pattern of songs over and over until your teeth itch.
If you want to sample the harder rock hits of this era, WRFX plays them. If you want a wide selection of real album-​oriented rock that was played by the better radio stations of the US during these years, look elsewhere, as in Internet radio.

This is a classic rock station, with one of the best morning radio shows in the country. They have the John Boy & Billy Show, which started in Charlotte & is now syndicated along the east coast.
The show is just 2 rednecks that have hilarious skits & such. It’s a really popular show & if you tune in you’ll soon realize why. You’ll find yourself laughing the whole commute to work.
Other than the morning show, I usually don’t tune in to the music portion of the station, mainly because I’m not one for the classic rock all of the time. But the John Boy & Billy Show makes this station worth tuning into.
