The Velvet UYE: Lebowski’s Neighborhood Grill

Our own Dave S. recently passed, and a number of Charlotte Unilocal luminaries gathered at Lebowski’s for a wake of sorts. It wasn’t the traditional wake, as we weren’t at Dave’s house or a funeral home, but rather in a place that many of us may have associated with Dave.
While perhaps not his favorite locale in Charlotte, it was right up there, as he enjoyed their beef on weck, their house-​made meatballs and a number of other selections.
For those that may remember, Lebowski’s also represents a notable growth point in the Unilocal community. Just about a year ago — almost exactly, in fact — we held a UYE (Unofficial Unilocal Event) that was one of the largest to date. Nine people turned out, including Dave and his daughter Danielle. Prior to that, the Charlotte UYEs were generally a bit smaller, more sporadic and less well attended. After that event, they were somewhat more regular, better attended, and we saw good growth in our community.
This time at Lebowski’s, we had 13. Myself, Denise E., Peter L., Tonya P., Nicole W., Eric D., Julia S. (and Erik!), Faith D., Pourina R. (and Lilee!), longtime listener and first-​time caller Jason L., and even once and future king Bill F. returned to pay his respects. Since some people don’t like the number 13, and I’m sure that Dave was there in spirit, what say we call it 14?
As to the staff, they were awesome. Many remembered Dave, including Amy, who helped us out last time. She even bought us a round of White Russians in his honor. Several of the other staff also came by and talked about Dave, and offered their condolences. Thanks Lebowski’s!
