We drove our cars on to the Charlotte To Essex Ferry(the southern-most of the three ferries operating on Lake Champlain) on our ways to and back from Smuggler’s Notch Ski Resort from Northern NJ. Although for us there is no save in miles driven or travel time door to door, taking the ferry from NY to VT and vice versa kept us on major highways(87 in NY in particular) for a greater portion of the trip and therefore made the ride feel much less tiring. It’s also nice having about a half hour break from driving too(while you’re still moving!) as well as the ability to enjoy beautiful Lake Champlain. The ferry runs every hour on the half hour from NY to Vermont, and every hour on the hour from Vermont to NY, but I recommend checking their Web site for their most up to date schedules: .

Great way to get across the lake. Our five year old loves getting out of the car and standing on the upper deck. Great for days when the water is a little choppy(makes the experience a bit more fun). Why spend the time driving around when you can just take the ferry?
