Just a small hole in the wall on the West Side, but for the price, you cant beat it. You be surprised how many attorneys, businessmen, and doctors frequent this place. I usually get a bowl of Brown Beans, Corn Bread, and an Ice Tea,. Don’t expect anything lavish. But you will enjoy the food. Ask for the Divorce Chowder! Its good!

I love it. The wait is a little long but its worth it. There fries are the best. Even if you don’t like burgers, one bite of theirs will make you love them. And the servers are really friendly. One of the servers named Pete, he’ll sit down and talk to you while you eat. And then there’s Allison. She’s super awesome. The place is pretty clean and they always have the game on. 10⁄10

Driving through town, so glad I stopped in since I did not want fast food. Met Allison, a super friendly server who read my mind and knew just what I wanted. She also said their cheese burger is fresh ground sirloin – perfect, seasoned, juicy, with crisp fresh lettuce tomato and white onion. Ordered onion rings and a perfect fountain coke… delicious. $ 11 total. Learned that this is an old school grill that’s been here 60 years. I’m definitely stopping back by on my way through again soon.

I’m so very torn about this place. I’ll start with the positives: the food is great, and is a great representation of what you come to love about southern cooking, and even a few surprises such as the oliviero cheeseburger. The wait staff is friendly, inviting and prompt. The ambiance reflects a great amount of pride in the local culture, featuring posters of famous mountaineer football players, including, randomly enough, pat white. Additionally, for those traveling through town, it’s conveniently located right off the highway, which makes it ideal for a quick pit stop, which they certainly are able to deliver on. Despite all of this, I can’t in good conscience say this place is between four and five stars. The biggest detractor is is that it feels dirty. I’m sure the service industry isn’t exactly booming in charleston, but a restaurant should at least put a modicum of effort forward in making sure that their surfaces and décor are somewhat tidy. I was thinking initially about two stars for the grill, but this restaurant went a long way in changing my mind about West Virginia, which in my circle of friends(including someone attending med school at Marshall) is bad mouthed consistently. I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed to return here, or charleston in general, should my travels take me back through WV.

I almost did not stop for lunch here because there were only 5 Unilocal reviews. Well the type of folks who eat here are probably not hanging out on their smartphones! This place is the kind of gem that I usually hope Unilocal will guide me to– if you are driving thru definitely stop for a bite of classic Americana done with care. Another reviewer commented on the environment but I would say it adds to the experience.

Don’t let that guy who’s trying to ruin this family business by throwing out the race card deter you. This is great food, an institution in Charleston, and has great prices.

Pretty good home style food. I had the creamed chicken and it was pretty tasty. Not a fancy place but enjoyed the meal.

Fantastic! I’m from Boston where places like this are on many corners-however, very few and far between here in Charleston. The food is excellent, just like having Nana cook for you;(and my Nana made the best). The folks working here are really friendly and welcoming. They have daily specials in addition to their ‘whiteboard’ menu; such as creamed chicken & fried green tomato BLTs. I highly suggest their cheeseburger & fries as well. We always sit at the counter, chit chat with Dave(the owner), his daughter & the other friendly staff, eat fantastic food, and watch Espn. Love this place!

I’m giving this place 4 stars for one reason and one reason only, the dining environment is old and dingy looking(but clean). The restaurant is in an old building in one of the oldest districts in town, the menu is on a chalk board and if your sitting at the table beneath, you feel as though everyone is watching you eat. The best Vegetable Beef soup in the Kanawha Valley. Hot dogs are wicked on an English bun. Best sandwiches in town! The pulled pork BBQ sandwich is a gift from the gods. It an old joint so don’t expect much in dining atmosphere, but don’t let first impressions fool you, this is the best place in town for lunch. Most underrated restaurant in town.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston. Everything I’ve eaten here is fabulous — burgers, creamed chicken, fried chicken, buffalo chicken chili, hot dogs, beans and cornbread, sammiches; my favorite item on the menu is wings, Elk River style with a side of fries or onion rings. The daily special is always a good bet or fried chicken on Fridays(fish dishes during Lent). The owner/staff are super friendly and know what your favorite beer is and will get you an icy one before you’re even in your seat. Great for lunch or dinner. They close around 4 on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays.
