This restaurant is somewhat different from the typical charleston venue as it is more upscale. The tables are close together, and this leads to waitstaff having to awkwardly sift through the room to deliver food and beverages to their tables. My family ate here during restaurant week as we wanted to try something new, and our food was overall good. I had a lemon cocktail that was wonderful. Our waiter was a bit stiff, and some guidance as to how the«flow» was to go would have been helpful. My dad’s appetizer/first course was served a decent amount of time after the rest of the party(which is odd because it was the least likely to require on-demand cooking as it was a served-cold dip). This was a little odd considering the caliber of restaurant this venue is trying to be. Overall, there are other restaurants in Charleston where I feel I could get more value for my money. Maybe it was pains of restaurant week, but I’m not sure that I can say I would dine here again.

We stopped in here today for a quick lunch while enjoying the shops of South Hills and the incredibly warm holiday weather. While the place was packed we sat at the bar and were immediately greeted and given menus. Great coffee, real cream, served in Fiesta cups. We both ordered the chicken and waffles and Incredibly pleased to have this tasty sweet and savory combo. the bourbon infused maple syrup was A-mazing and To Die For. Our server was so attentive and courteous. This is a restaurant that knows how to deliver great customer service. Everything at the South Hills Market & Café was perfect. My only complaint(and it is my own personal preference) is about the 3 televisions that I had to stare at because we were seated at the bar. I am not a huge fan of television and the 24-hour news cycle but I know other people are into it… Next time we visit I will make it a point to wait for a table. Thank you so much for the care and great food!

Love the South Hills Market and Café for both lunch and dinner. For lunch I crave their smoked salmon BLT. Dinner is great here because they always have interesting specials. Highly recommend!

Best restaurant in Charleston. Great steaks, seafood, and the Kobe Burger is legit. The service has been fantastic and they have an ample beer and wine selection.

So, so bad. Table of 6 and only 1 of us enjoyed their meal. The steak tasted like frozen Omaha Steaks steak, both the tenderloin and whatever unrecognizable cut was served with the Steak Frites… The sauce served with the steak was like jarred brown gravy, reduced. The trout was covered in a too-strong lemon sauce that was somehow not strong enough to cover the fishy taste. The polenta fries were gooey in the middle. The Kobe burger was served absent the caramelized onions and fried egg that were ordered. Rather than offering a new burger, the server brought the onions and egg afterward, but so late the burger was cold on their arrival. I cannot believe the poor quality of this meal. The server seemed less than enthused to be there and I have to wonder if it was because she felt guilty for serving such sub par food. Go to Noah’s instead.

Dined here for the third time last weekend. Previous meals were good but not that memorable. On the positive side, the dining room is a very pleasant space. It’s a vibrant scene. Our waitress was extremely pleasant and very professional. The French fries were terrific and served with two dipping sauces. The bread was excellent as well. My salad tasted good but there was brown lettuce in it — a restaurant at this level cannot let that leave the kitchen. And the short ribs were beautifully presented but bland. All in all a pleasant dining experience so I will return especially because this is one of the better places to dine in Charleston. But I expect a bit more for my money.

I’m a Foodie and I found this place on trip advisor. Glad I did because Unilocal reviews seem to be definitely scewed. Had great service from Tasha. Food was really really good. I had the cubano which was one of the better ones I have ever had. My mom who was traveling with me had some cool smoked chicken quesidillas. Both really rocked. The onion rings(while at a steep meal upgrade) were great too. Definitely hand made and not frozen. Its off the beaten path if ur passing thru but worth the trip.

I was in here a few months back after hearing good things from mostly everyone. I didn’t leave a review at the time, because I had originally intended to give it another shot. However, after reading a nasty comment the owner left on another poor review, I decided against that… so here goes. When I was in, it was with a party of 3 other people. I had the bone marrow, which was mediocre(especially for a $ 14 appetizer). Another party member ordered the oysters, which were incredibly bland and tasted mostly of unseasoned cornmeal. I ordered the grouper as my entrée, which was surprisingly good. I did not dislike the food to the extent that I wouldn’t have come back to give them another shot, even though there was a bit lacking given that they obviously market and price themselves as a higher end restaurant. Service left a bit to be desired and they were not busy at the time. However, when I read Paul S’s review and then read the owner’s comment to that review, I was a bit floored. Not only does she seem to be insulted that someone could dare dislike her restaurant, but she actually went on to personally insult him by «suggesting he use spell check» and then passive aggressively threaten him by suggesting he «come to our restaurant in person and speak with my husband, the Chef». Completely unacceptable behavior from a restaurant owner. I won’t be back and I encourage anyone else who reads this review to avoid at all costs.

My rating pertains to brunch. This is the best place to get brunch in town. I prefer the brunch items on the menu to the buffet(mostly because I can’t eat enough food to justify the buffet, which is delicious).

Order the burger with a fried egg #amazing …& you can never go wrong with the steak frites and their awesome mac n’cheese. Always consistent with their food!

I would agree with Christina H. — I had Easter brunch with great expectations in mind & was completely disappointed… One would think that a pastry chef could prepare a simple bread for such a festive meal? The restaurant is quaint, only eight tables if my memory serves me correct. The owner– chef wasn’t that friendly, not even a simple greeting on the buffet line & his dismal wife\hostess could not take the few seconds to offer our party of four a simply, «have a nice day» during our exit. I’m a retired executive chef for Macaroni Grill, if I had ever treated any of my guest as such I would have been with out a job… I want be back!

This is one of the best lunch places in Charleston. They have unique lunch offerings on the regular menus plus a special and two soups daily. If you don’t get the special, I recommend the Mediterranean Wrap. The market sides are excellent-try the three bean salad with chick peas, red kidney beans. The servers and staff are quick and friendly. Alison and Tasha even laugh at my jokes which, trust me, aren’t that funny. They have a great dinner menu, too, but I’m there mainly for lunch.

Had reservation 545 sat down by 550 and no good until 640… which was bread that we had to ask for twice. We were in the middle 3 tables away from the door but yet everytime the door opened a terrible chill rushed by us. The food was good but not great for the price, and we had to eat our food fast once we received it bc had concert tickets for 730. Thought we would have enough time… but we still had to rush. The service was very poor and slow. Would not suggest this restaurant.

After having a few delicious drinks across the street, we came in, sat at the bar for 15 minutes, and nobody took even our drink order. We drank some refreshing water with good crushed ice, then left. They were busy and woefully understaffed. I’ve been to this restaurant before and enjoyed a great meal, but was disappointed tonight.

I came in at prime time on a Saturday night and was surprised to be seated at a table for four right away. I was immediately comfortable with the surroundings. I think the most impressive part of my dining experience was the hot tea. There were so many tea selections and plenty of honey packets. I ordered the oyster appetizer and found them to be pretty tasteless. Had the Short Rib entrée. While the portions were generous, the meal was also very bland. I don’t normally salt my food but I found myself contemplating whether or not it would help add some flavor, however, there was not a single salt or pepper shaker in sight. My friend ordered a burger and was charged an extra $ 3 for lettuce and tomato, though a slice of smoked Gouda was only $ 1 and I have a really hard time understanding that logic. I also tried her Mac N Cheese and it was basically boiled pasta, hardly any flavor at all. Service was a little slow but I wasn’t in a hurry and it didn’t bother me. Our checks weren’t correct but we paid and left anyway. I was very hopeful for this dinner spot but I doubt I’ll give it a second chance.

Small, quite restaurant with really wonderful food. I ordered the Steak Frites and fries, they were out of hanger steak and substituted a filet that was cooked to perfection. My wife ordered a Kobe burger with smoked Gouda, WOW! And the five cheese Mac and Cheese, was a knock out. Had a small pasta salad that I absolutely loved, fresh taste and well, you just have to try it. I will be back!

My neighbor really recommended this place because they make dinners you can walk in and take home(I travel a lot). They no longer do that so I decided to try their lunch. I figured I’d try something simple, so I had the Cuban and onion rings. I’m not sure how someone can make such a horrible cuban sandwich, since we have good cubans in Tampa, fl I might of had my expectations pretty high but it wasn’t even on cuban bread. The onion rings were decent. The décor and music… Overall, it was just eh.

Just about a good a place as I’ve found in Charleston. I had take out, mainly b/c I didn’t want to eat in a restaurant by myself, but loved the food. 1) The bok choy and mushroom had a surprising amount of flavor to it. 2) The marrow — good, but not a lot of marrow. Not sure if this is how its supposed to be, but I guess I envisioned being able to scoop out and spread the marrow across the provided bread. There wasn’t really enough to do this. 3) Polenta fries — good. After two or three, it was just too much to eat. 4) Carpaccio — the salad was a little iffy, but the carpaccio itself was pretty good. All in all, this place is a nice change from the usual restaurants in the area(usually heavier food). If you want something new and different, I would encourage you to check it out.

Hard cookies tasted a week old. Long wait for order. Nothing on the menu at lunch was kid friendly. The grilled cheese couldn’t even be simplified. I love to cook and love great food. I just wasn’t impressed.

South Hills Market and Café is my new favorite spot. They have great coffee selections in the AM to get your day started. There are always regular, decaf and flavored options. Their Coffee Cake flavored coffee is delicious. I have not had the pleasure of having lunch here(yet) but we did have a great dinner here with friends last weekend. We started with some Blue Moon beer and the Popcorn with white truffle oil and sea salt. This was a great way to snack without getting full before our entrees came out. We also tried the Sweet Corn Madelines. These were delicious little cornbread mufins with a great honey butter. For the entrée, I had the Seafood Risotto and it was amazing. Big chunks of lobster, sole, grouper, and shrimp finished with aged asiago. If you are seafood lover you are going to dig this. The wife had a pasta dish(cannot find it on the online menu) that included chicken, asparigus, roasted peppers and it was finished with a brie cream sauce. It reminded me of a sweeter version of an alfredo sauce. This entrée is recommended for any pasta lover and is very filling. Pros — Atmosphere, beer, wine and spirit selection, service, food quality and operating hours. Cons — Some of the entrée selections are pricey so this may be a con for some. I feel like you get your moneys worth.
