The oldest preservation society in America. People come from around the world to stroll thru Charleston’s homes and gardens. Rainbow Row is the gorgeous epitome of paying it forward. In 1920, a group of philanthropists and visionaries created a philosophy that lives today. Now it’s our turn to pay it forward so our kids’ kids’ kids can live in history in classic sustainable beautiful architecture.

I lived in Charleston for much of my childhood and was happy to find this shop during one of my visits back to the Lowcountry. It’s full of books, recipe books, paintings, etc of having to do with Charleston. I would have loved to have made a few purchases but their credit card machine was down that day. The staff was friendly and apologetic and told me where there was a nearby ATM but I didn’t have time unfortunately. Well, I guess I’ll have to make sure to stop next time I’m in town.

We were enjoying our bicycle ride through Charleston and I was in search of a bookstore. I had heard about the famous«Charleston Receipts” — the oldest Junior League cookbook still in print. A lovely local woman stopped to say hello and I asked her help to direct us to the local big bookstore. Instead she recommended that we visit the Preservation Society as they would surely have what I was looking for and more. What a great tip! Located on the corner of King and Queen, the Preservation Society of Charleston operates a wonderful gift/book store. The ladies that ran this location were friendly and helpful– some of the nicest people we met on our trip. I picked up a copy of the famed Receipts for myself and my mom, who taught me to favor these locally produced cookbooks containing the passed down recipes, or «receipts»(read the forward in the book for the story on the name). We also picked up a lovely guidebook, a map and some other history books for hubby. This was the highlight of the afternoon and we will make the effort to drop in on our next visit! Thanks ladies!
