Excellent food! Don’t let the name deter you! The festivals are yummy! fresh hot and crunchy with soft center, soup was very flavorful. The most moist, mouth-watering, flavorful salmon I’ve had. And I like the small romantic feel and the reggae music. I liked the kola champagne and crab cakes as well. The crab cakes have a spicy glaze like sauce on top that was great. Even though toward the end of the night they were running out of certain items, my second choices were awesome! The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the rice but my boyfriend liked it. Also, the booth is too low for the table. I sat down and felt like I almost sank a bit so had that little kid at an adult table feeling. There was a bit of a wait for the entrees but I didn’t mind, it wasn’t too long and I had good company. I’ve never been to Jamaica but I believe this is the real deal here. I plan to return on another trip to try more things on the menu.

Excellence all around. Great hot fresh food Brest ambiance. Great music location is right beside the market And local bars. Best part… It’s BYOB! I’ve had a great deal of Caribbean food here and this is the best I’ve had stateside all was needed is random goats coming through the door lol. Come enjoy. It’s small but a great dive place to get a taste of the carrier and most famous island!

Jamaican me Happy is what you’ll be saying once you leave Jamaican me Hungry, and you certainly won’t be hungry anymore either. The food is like homemade, send you straight to the island kind of good. The aroma is so apparent the second you walk in you can’t help but ask for what ever you’re smelling. Being such a small, hole in the wall, restaurant you wouldn’t expect such lovely décor and the slight essence of romantic vibes by the lighting and calming reggae music but it’s perfect for a date night and for close conversation with the owner about her passions for the food, presentation and culture. It’s the perfect place for authentic Jamaican food and atmosphere. Even if you’ve never ventured into that part of your taste buds before it is totally worth it and the owner is quick to help you decide what will make your mouth water most.

Excellent service. Excellent! I was there with a large group and we ordered everything from the oxtails(tad salty but flavorful) to the chicken curry. We were treated like royalty and they really went out of their way. Make sure to try the coconut cake. It was soooo good. They run out of beef patties and jerk chicken quick so get there early on the weekends.

I visited Jamaican Me Hungry for lunch in July 2015. It has taken me a month and a half to write this review, because I needed some time to process the experience. Now, take this with a grain of salt, because perhaps the people at Jamaican Me Hungry were having a bad day. But I thought it was worth posting a review, because this was — and I don’t say this lightly — one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in awhile. A few work colleagues and I were dying to try Jamaican food, so we were excited to stop in at JMH for lunch. We arrived at a standard time for lunch — 11:30 — and were told to come back in a half an hour or so. We came back in a half an hour. Then, it ends up that despite them being advertised on the menu, there were no dine-in lunch specials — so we paid dinner prices for lunch items. It also ended up that almost everything we tried to order was unavailable — including staples such as Jamaican Jerk Chicken. I ordered the stew chicken and asked the server/owner(?) to make it spicy. The server then went on to tell me that I didn’t know what I was talking about and that I wouldn’t be able to handle the level of spice that I had asked for, for some reason. One of my friends tried to order literally THREE things off of the menu that ended up being unavailable. When I ended up getting my meal, the rice was sickeningly sweet, the salad was a simple iceberg with grape tomatoes, and the rest of my meal was not at all memorable. We had to almost BEG our server to bring us the standard glasses of water or silverware. It was astounding, really. After several requests, we received glasses of water and silverware. My friend ordered rice, and then a half an hour later the server reported that he had given the last rice to a take-out customer. My friend ordered something else that ended up being burned! Now, I haven’t even mentioned some other things, but this had turned into a comedy of errors. Despite all of these mishaps, the server/owner didn’t even offer to give us a discount, and did not apologize for our negative experience. Insttead, he blamed everything on the kitchen staff. I will add that this review is based on my one experience at Jamaican Me Hungry, but this one experience was bad enough that I would never visit and not recommend this place to anyone.

Beautiful décor. Red snapper and chicken dumpling soup were incredible… highly recommend the 3 — course meal. Get there early before the jerk chicken runs out. Place is really intimate. Put it this way, we chatted up the chef for 5 minutes during our meal while jamming to Bob Marley. Also ended up chatting with another four tables while there. Just a good atmosphere, great food, and wonderful staff. We’ll be back.

My experience in this restaurant needless to say was not the best. The only thing slightly good about the restaurant was the taste of the food(but even that not worth their prices). That being said after waiting 3 hours for our food, them being out of most things on the menu and a bug crawling out of my friends dish it wasn’t worth it all. On top of that our service was terrible. We waited an hour just to be served our drinks, the waiter continuously ease dropped on our conversation and inputted his own rude commentary. I supposed I can’t blame his for ease dropping since the dining room could only seat ~4 parties at same time. To top our night off, they refused to give the group the 3rd course of our meal, as stated in menu, that we paid for because«it was a complimentary desert» and they had no more to give.

Our reservations were for 6:30PM Saturday, we were on time. However, we didn’t get our food till 9PM. It was said that everything is «prepared to order»; shrimp are peeled, vegetables sliced, etc. when a dish is ordered… it shouldn’t take 3 hours to peel 6 shrimp. They ran out of beef patties by 6:30 and shrimp skewers, no alcohol license! Bob Marley music and documentary for entertainment, be prepared for stimulating conversation with your party. Place is tiny, 6 to 8 seats at a time.

A friend and I were excited to visit this establishment, however we were very disappointed to say the least. The establishment was unkept and the food was awful. The waitress was very intrusive and not patient in explaining the menu items to my friend. I love Jamaican cuisine and I have been to several Jamaican restaurants but this has to be the worse Jamaican restaurant I have been to.

To put it plain and simple! The food was disgusting. Rice and peas were burnt and sweet.. Yuck! The cabbage. Yuck! The mango jerk chicken was okay but I could live with out it. Won’t be visiting this place EVER! I paid 14 bucks for disgusting food! Too disappointed! Service was also crappy!

Showed up one day and the joint was closed. Showed up again another day and it was closed again. Their sign said they were supposed to be open. Not sure what the deal is, but they need to get it together if they haven’t gone out of business yet.

The best food we have had in Charleston, served in a cozy, friendly atmosphere. Authentic Jamaican. The desert/pastries were excellent as were the entrées and the drinks.

Jamaican Me Hungry… and Angry! We waited an hour for three small sandwiches and one entrée. The server forgot to ask us about our salad until 30 minutes after we first placed our order and only brought us water at that time. The food came so slowly that the last person in our party started eating when the first person had finished eating. The server messed up our bill as well and generally behaved in a confused manner. This is a small restaurant, it can probably only hold about 20 people at best, but the restaurant was only half full at the time, and the service was unacceptable. This is probably the worst restaurant(if it can even be called that) that I have ever been to. What a maddening experience!

If you want authentic Jamaican favors and authentic dishes do visit. We tried the sandwich and soup and both were amazing. We like spicy food and asked for the Jamaican spiced jerk chicken spice but would advise it is really tasty starts with a sweet taste and ends with a spicy kick. Be warned try the milder version if this is your first time eating spicy food!

I was really looking forward to some authentic Jamaican food and was highly disappointed as we were treated as if they did not want us there. My friend and I went in and ordered and we waited an hour and 15 minutes. We then asked if it would be much longer and the waitress said we were up next and that he had to fillet the fish for one of our orders. I am totally OK with waiting for made to order food, but 15 minutes later she came out to ask again what exactly we had ordered. We had to leave then as we had to get on to a Piccolo performance and could not wait any longer especially if he had not even started our food. She could have at least given us the plantains that I had ordered on the side while we waited! Very disappointed in the lack of service and the way we were treated.

I gave two stars because the food was decent. I requested sides(peas and rice, plaintains, and vegetables) for a to go order. I was charged $ 13 which is the same price as a meal I found out when I got their menu. Also if you order an entre, these items come with one. Customer service is not this restaurants strong suit. When I called, the woman on the phone answered«hello» When I came in, she was on the telephone for the first few minutes of standing there. It was not a business call. Also I called within minutes of leaving to question the charges. She said ‘that’s why I told you we had vegan options’ as that’s what I was inquiring about. The menu that you can find on urban spoon is not accurate as she readily acknowledged.

Jamaican Me Hungry is a hidden nugget of deliciousness. My family & I decided to have lunch there on a Monday afternoon and we were blown away at how awesome this place was. Ush the chef was delightful, funny and courteous in accommodating our family(it’s not always easy traveling with a picky 4 year old) and he suggested some of their most popular dishes. Not being a stranger to Jamaican food, their soup, rice & cabbage was absolutely out of this world. I ordered the snapper(non-spicey), but if you are a spice fan, they can totally accommodate your palate. There was a lot of good food, and I was determined to eat as much as I could it — the little that i did have left over, I made sure to take for a midnight snack. This place was truly a hidden gem; if I had known about it when I first arrived to Charleston, I would have been eating there every day: lunch & dinner. Tips: they do not serve breakfast, although they open at 11am and the ackee & fish is a possible breakfast dish in Jamaica. And they do not open on Tuesdays. They do get really crowed for dinner, especially on Fridays & Saturdays — so if you want to enjoy authentic Jamaican food I would venture out to this restaurant early in the week or at lunch time. *If you eat a late lunch around 2pm, there’s a less likelihood that you’ll even be hungry for dinner because that’s how much food they serve you. Thanks!
