The Apartments at Midtown 501

My wife and I moved here in August. We’re very satisfied with the experience. Highlights:
–A really nice huge pool
–Nice luxury apartments that are much more affordable than Durham and Carrboro.
–The clubhouse is pretty nice. Bringing friends there for shuffleboard is lots of fun. They also have a Starbucks machine that dispenses complimentary 12 oz cups of coffee.
–The staff are great. They are very professional and anticipate tenant needs. Jon Taffer would love this staff.
It’s affordable and walk-​able to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Moving to Midtown 501 was a great choice.

I love our apartment in MidTown 501!
The apartments have just been outfitted all brand-​new modern appliances. There are lights in every room. There are 2 bathrooms with very easy to clean shower/​tubs. The ceilings are on the high side, and the floor plans make the most of the ample square footage. The dark wood floors are very easy to clean. The kitchen counters are gorgeous and there is a gigantic island with provides a nice space to prepare meals.
The pool is pretty huge and there is always a ton of seating around it. We’ve brought friends over at night to play games on the pool patio. It’s a really nice outdoor space. The gym is fantastic with plenty of brand new ellipticals and treadmills, and when the weather is nice, I prefer to get my exercise by walking through nearby Booker Creek Trail.
I absolutely love our complex staff. They are completely professional and kind… and light years more competent compared to SunStone Apartment’s staff.
There are just two things I would change if I could:
1) I wish that we had more natural light! Even though we are South-​facing, due to the shade in the complex, we only get morning sun in our living room. It’s kind of a bummer and it might mean that I will be looking for a new place next summer. I’ve got to have my natural light!
2) I wish there were more closets. I would love a living room closet and a linen closet. I’m a total minimalist, but I still have things that I’m not sure where to store such as sheets and towels.

Avoid Avoid Avoid!
Over priced & not friendly. They threw some cheap imitation hardwoods down, painted it «builder beige», shrunk the closets from ample to minuscule, the bathrooms are so small you get claustrophobic. Oh and don’t even think about asking for any help! The new office people are almost hilariously unhelpful… total amateur hour! Save a couple hundred $$ and go live at the lodge, heck Estes Park may be a better option!

We lived there, in Foxcroft happily for about ten years then under the Midtown owners for several months. We have since moved out. I can review our experience with the new ownership, Eller Living, and the advantages and disadvantages of living there. I’ll start with advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
Location: It’s within walking distance of two, maybe three shopping centers; you can walk to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods if you can walk at all. If you don’t mind a hike you can get to Harris Teeter. There’s a creek and woods and a greenway and a nice hill nearby and bus stops.
Age: This was built decades ago when apartments were bigger. We found our apartment to be right sized.
Disadvantages:
Location: It’s on low ground near a creek which floods at times. In 2013 some apartments (I heard it was about 12) were flooded. I would not live in the lower buildings.
Age; These are old buildings as apartment buildings go. Our apartment developed cracks in the wall that were not fixed, just plastered or painted over. Friends of ours, not in a lower building, repeatedly had flooding due to cracks in the foundation. The current renovations are largely just putting makeup on old structures.
Observations on Eller: When they bought the complex they intended to gut all the apartments and demolish the main building to build a new one. Since every apartment is to be renovated everyone would have to move sooner or later. They soon offered only monthly leases with 40 days notice needed to leave or be evicted. (Check one of the reviews of Foxcroft Apartments to see one person’s experience with that.) We gave the required notice and had no problems.
We were of course curious about progress and when we might have to move so we asked in the office. Repeatedly we were told what the manager had been told about how soon this or that would happen and repeatedly those things did not happen. Eventually the office stopped making any predictions at all.
We were happy at Foxcroft and with the office staff, who are still with Eller but in higher positions as of this writing. I think those people would try to do the right thing by you but I can’t say whether they will be able to or not. I can say we left and are happy we did.
