Very nice drive up breakfast place. Just get your food and go! I ordered the bacon and eggs breakfast and received plenty of everything including a big biscuit. Portions are nice for the price.

The biscuits at sunrise are the best biscuits in the triangle area, hands down. The line stretches into the street during peak hours, and for good reason. The biscuits are awesome! I’d recommend getting there on the earlier side because the biscuits are usually fresher than they are later in the day, which is to be expected. The chicken biscuit with a little hot sauce added is truly to die for. The biscuit kitchen is clearly superior to Rise in Durham, which has good doughnuts but fails a bit in the biscuit department(at least compared to the biscuit kitchen). If you have out of town friends coming in who are looking for something authentic and local, this is the perfect place to grab breakfast from after a night one the town.

I tried to make a biscuit sandwich healthy by adding kale, this hip option even impressed my mother. The line can be long, but it’s worth it. They will get your order wrong occasionally, however, so check it before driving off! I enjoyed my biscuit sandwich very much! I felt like a guinea pig sitting in my car waiting a while ‘ladeedah’ behind the previous car for my order. The long wait time meant that my food was fresh, right? Yes, this place looks like a dump and you have to drive though it, but who honestly wants to dine in a fast food restaurant like this? Not me!

«Super-popular chicken biscuit shack on Franklin Street» Been coming here sporadically for years– surprised to see on Unilocal that I hadn’t reviewed it. This(Saturday) morning at ~9:30am, we waited in the line on Franklin Street for ~15 minutes to get a few of their famous biscuits. Positives: + Excellent quality products. The biscuits were extremely fluffy and fresh– they’d somewhat fall apart as you bite into it. Buttery goodness throughout. The fried chicken patty on it is large with a flavorful crust. I wouldn’t say it’s overly greasy compared to any other biscuit or fried chicken. I added lettuce & tomato to mine, and they were fresh and good quality. If you add egg, that’s always really good too. DELICIOUS. + Value. This large, very filling basic chicken biscuit is only ~$ 4, though you pay extra to add options like lettuce, tomato, egg, etc. Yes, it’s more than some fast food ones, but the quality offsets it fine. + Service. They always seem very friendly. Negatives: — Speed. Not their fault in a bad way, but their popularity means you can’t just«grab» one of these when you’re in a hurry. The speed of the line is average per person, but the length means there can be quite a wait. — No inside dining room. It is a drive-through shack. Since I don’t live in Chapel Hill, means I don’t get to eat it(very) hot. — Today’s visit, we paid for hash browns to go with the biscuit«meal» but they were not in the bag. I’m not lowering the score rating for that since it may be a very rare mistake, but it was disappointing. Overall, I think the positives dwarf the negatives, so I’m happy to say I’m a fan.

Sunrise is my favorite spot for a breakfast biscuit. Disclaimer: I went to undergrad at UNC and my love for this place could be biased and colored by nostalgia. Sunrise has been featured on multiple food shows and has received multiple accolades and awards. I will say that they deserve all of this high praise. If you come to Sunrise during breakfast on just about any day of the week, the line of cars will overflow out into the street. Sunrise traffic literally blocks a lane of traffic and it is just totally accepted and expected by those local to Chapel Hill. If you don’t want to wait in this line, you also have the option of parking in the small lot and ordering inside. Even though the line is always long, it goes quite quickly. Sunrise definitely knows what they’re doing. I would review multiple items on the menu, but the only problem is that I’ve only ever ordered one thing, the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit. I ordered this the first time that I came here and I’ve been stuck on it ever since. The biscuits at Sunrise are made from scratch and absolutely awesome. They are flaky and not the least bit dry. If you want proof that they are made from scratch, you can just look in the window at the woman covered in flour. The sausage patty is good and spicy. I really think what makes the biscuit stick out is the cheese. They use quality cheddar cheese that is melted perfectly on top. The hash brown that comes with the combo is very similar to the one you get at McDonald’s. It is nothing too special. The sweet tea, on the other hand, is way above average and they give you a huge cup of it. Sunrise is absolutely worth going out of your way if you are in Chapel Hill. The employees are all friendly and proud of what they are a part of. The biscuits and ingredients are all quality, and the end product is incredible. This is the quintessential breakfast spot in Chapel Hill.

I’ve been a fan of Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen for many, many years. Really decades, at this point! Always has been the best place for incredible biscuits and amazing cinnamon rolls. We hadn’t been in a few years so made our way to Chapel Hill to a fix. It’s a drive through, no seating. You either eat in your car and take it somewhere else to eat. The line moves fast and your order comes up lickety-split! The employees are fast and friendly. We got our usual, bacon, egg and cheese biscuits and a cinnamon roll to share. Unless it was an off day, things have changed. The biscuits were dry and not fluffy as they used to be. The cinnamon roll was lacking too. Barely warm, scant icing and not puffy either. We were disappointed to say the least! I wrote a message to the Facebook page and got a swift response and apology from the owner who said he’d email a gift certificate to come back. I hope so because we’d love to know our sub par experience/visit this week was a fluke!

This place is always super crowded. They only have drive thru so crowds means a line down Franklin street. Don’t plan on going on a saturday or Sunday morning if you’re starving! Anyway, I got the much talked about egg and biscuit sandwich and also a cinnamon roll because it looked too good to pass up! The cinnamon roll was not that fresh– the icing was not the best. The egg biscuit was just ok. Honestly, I’m not sure what the fuss is about. Good, but nothing out of the ordinary here.

Greasy and crumbly O, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen You were worth the wait

Follow the same rule of hole-in-the-wall BBQ joints being the best, and you’ll find this place for biscuits. The line of cars for this place spills out of the driveway, out onto Franklin and often stops somewhere on the bridge. That should tell you what locals think. For your wait you get a mom and pop, scramble-to-fill-the-orders experience that delivers everything you expect from a good southern biscuit. It’s crumbly, light and fluffy, buttery soft… and yet dense in that delicious scrape it off the top of your pallet way. The often accompanying chicken is moist and crispy and flavourful, and best of all, thick enough to be worth biting. Pro-tip: park behind nearby state farm building and use the walk-in entrance. The smells inside are FANTASTIC. Also, there’s a nearby natural trail if you’re feeling guilty and a library within walking distance, though I recommend reading before getting your hands greasy. :D

It has been years since I’ve eaten here. I had a chicken biscuit with hoop cheese at rise a couple weeks ago, so I thought I’d try here again for comparison’s sake. It was just okay. The cheddar was cold and didn’t melt against the chicken because it wasn’t hot enough. The biscuit wasn’t as fluffy as rise’s. If I come back, I’ll probably just get a cinnamon roll. I remember them being very good and larger than your head. On the plus side, they now have iced coffee, and it’s pretty darn good. I think they add cream and sweeten it. It was almost 80 degrees outside this afternoon, so it was perfect iced coffee weather. PS if you drive around behind the building next door, there’s parking and picnic tables next to a nice small wooded area.

I try to avoid absolutes in my reviews because I think it weakens an argument if someone can easily refute it by countering with another example. However, I will make an exception for Sunrise, because they are absolutely my favorite biscuits, anywhere. On our recent trip back through my college town there were only two places that I told Suzy were must-sees, and this was at the top of the list. There’s a legit reason cars line up and down the street every morning to get a fix here. Of course, since I had an extra person to share the calories with we got to splurge even more than I normally would have back during the Saturday morning hangover days. My standby, the steak and cheese biscuit, took an extra 5 minutes for them to prepare, but it was well worth the rather short wait. And we noticed an item which I had either overlooked back in the day, or was new, the Bad Grandpa, a fried chicken biscuit topped with cheese, egg, and bacon, which was virtually irresistible to order, and wound up being even better than expected. One thing I had never gotten around to trying, the cinnamon roll, but since Suzy had read ahead and wanted to get one, I didn’t need much convincing. One thing that can’t be understated is the size of these biscuit sandwiches. Half of one might be a filling meal for some people, but a full one plus an Arnold Palmer usually does the trick for me. In an ideal world I would like the biscuits to be just the slightest bit more crispy on the edges, but this is really being nitpicky just to avoid saying they’re perfect. The meat cuts aren’t top of the line gourmet style, but the biscuits are so cheap you would be crazy to expect anything more. It’s a college town place that actually feels like a college town place. The grease levels might be a bit high for some people’s liking, but baby, you’re in The South, that’s how we do it. Don’t make a trip through the Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham area without coming to Sunrise. Wherever you’re coming from, you’re very likely not to have this back there(I can say without a doubt we don’t in DC).

I am glad that I do not live in Chapel Hill because I am pretty sure Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen would become part of my weekend breakfast routine. Excellent as a one-off treat, but my waistline could not handle it regularly! Anyway, back to the food. My mister and I grabbed two chicken biscuits with cheese, hashbrowns, and sweet teas. All were phenomenally delicious. The biscuits were perfectly fluffy, the chicken was juicy and tender, and the sweet tea was syrupy goodness. In retrospect, I think I would skip the cheese because it detracted from the chicken. Despite being busy, they even asked if our dog wanted a biscuit too! He also approved of the biscuits.

Yesterday we went to rise biscuits so we wanted to try sunrise today. This place is a drive thru only so we parked and ate in our car. Biscuits are much bigger than rise and the biscuits are very moist on the inside and just the right amount of crispy on the outside. They have a much more traditional menu. I got a chicken waffle biscuit. The fried chicken piece was huge!!! My husband got the grampa special… Which had eggs, bacon, fried chicken and cheese. It was also very good though very filling! Also got a hash brown which was good too. Both of us were stuffed when we finished our biscuits! Overall we really liked the biscuits here the best. As a whole, the sandwiches were very good but not mind blowing… But definitely worth a visit!

This little rinky dink lookin’ drive-thru turns out some pretty awesome scratch made biscuits. With over 300 reviews and a 4.5 star rating I figured this is a must stop for some good biscuit action. This was my first visit here and just looking at the pictures everyone had posted, it looked like the chicken, egg & cheese is a popular choice, so I figured«when in Rome»… I’ve had plenty of chicken biscuits in my time, but never with egg and cheese on’em, so this was a first for me and it was outstanding. The fresh made biscuit itself was great, the chicken is real chicken breast, not one of those sad chicken part patties, it was fried perfectly, so tender and juicy on the inside and the breading was crispy and golden brown on the outside and well seasoned, then the egg and cheese just made it perfect. This was my first visit to The Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, but sure won’t be the last. I’ll be taking a short detour off the highway to here any time I’m passing through fo-sho…as long as it’s before 2:30pm closin’ time.

I don’t get it. I really wish I could see what others like about this particular with the chicken biscuits. Traffic for this little drive-thru definitely overflows into the street and I didn’t find the wait time horrendous, but here are my thoughts on the food: Chicken Biscuit with Egg: The biscuit was dry and left me wanting something to drink after each bite of it. The chicken by itself, however, was good. Well-seasoned and a nice breading to it. The egg is kind of an afterthought. Overall, I’d take a Chik-fil-A chicken biscuit any day over this even if Sunrise’s chicken tastes better. Regardless, both biscuit sandwiches are salty. Tenderloin biscuit: This was worse than the chicken biscuit. The tenderloin was tough, dry, and just bleh. Biscuit was the same all around. Egg and cheese biscuit: I’m sad to say this was the most enjoyable item. I don’t get why the biscuit with the egg and cheese was more moist than the others when all biscuit sandwiches use the same biscuit. Hashbrowns: They’re ok. Pretty normal. I can check Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen off my list. I think there’s some kind of novelty to it although I’m not sure what it is. The best analogy I have for this is going to Atlanta’s original Varsity for greasy food.

Perfect spot to get a quick bite if you are on the go. This place is a DRIVE-THRU, so if you are looking for a sit-down breakfast place, this is not the place to go. I ordered the egg and cheese biscuit and a cinnamon roll. The biscuit was delicious and warm and SOWASTHECINNAMONROLL. I would definitely recommend getting a cinnamon roll.

Most people drop by through the drive-thru, which ALWAYS has a line(that causes general driving frustration for all). But it’s worth it!!! Always. I’ve been here a few times now and have never been disappointed. Most recently, I ordered the chicken biscuit with egg and cheddar cheese add-ons. The biscuits are always large and fluffy — easy on the wallet too. The fried chicken was huge and juicy. The cheddar cheese was just a cheese square that they let melt in the sandwich, but this added too much salt for my taste. The egg was a simple fried egg. Yum yum. Definitely a staple Chapel Hill biscuit kitchen. You can’t go wrong with Sunrise. Note their hours though. I would LOVE for them to one day stay open late(because hello, college town), but their limited hours make them that much more desirable.

Coming from Texas, I love the honey butter chicken biscuit from Whataburger. Seriously it’s one of my favorite breakfast/late night snacks. Now on to Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen. I hate to say it, but the chicken biscuit here is hands down the best one I’ve ever had. My heart just sunk a little bit when I said that but it’s true. Every bite of the biscuit was buttery fluffy goodness. Oh man and that chicken was super moist and flavorful. The cheese is perfect on top! Expect a line for this delicious biscuit. It’s worth the wait!

Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is my favorite chicken biscuit spot in the area. Chapel Hill proudly boasts about the cheddar chicken biscuits at Time Out, but to me, Sunrise takes the prize. Looking at it from the outside, you would not think much of the place, but the drive thru line will tell you otherwise. It is not uncommon to see the line extend out onto Franklin Street. But don’t let that discourage you, because it is worth the wait. Even if the line looks long, it moves incredibly fast. There is a door that you can walk in and order if you get lucky and get one of the few coveted parking spots. My go-to order is the chicken biscuit with cheese and a cinnamon roll. The chicken is juicy and the biscuit is buttery goodness. And the melting cheddar cheese takes it over the top. After the perfection of the chicken biscuit, it is great to end the meal with one of their sweet(and cheap) cinnamon rolls. UNC students, if you haven’t tried this place the morning after a late night out, then you have not had the full Carolina experience yet.
