I have regularly ordered dinners from Guru but went in to the Lunch Buffet(only 9 bucks) for the first today and absolutely loved it! They had a wide selection of appetizers and entrees, dishes I’ve never even heard of and I’m surprised that I enjoyed them all! The lunch here is easily the best deal in town and now Ive added a few more things on my «Indian food I like» list.

The Indian food here is delicious! The lunch buffet is great. Their dinner portions are enough for me to have two meals but the quality is still wonderful. I’ve tried other Indian restaurants in the area and they just don’t compare. Try it, you won’t be sorry!

I always go with my husband for lunch. They have a wonderful buffet. I love their food there. It is not spicy and the thing we love best is the naan bread they serve at the table. So warm and so fresh! I could it the whole basket if I could! It is included in the buffet price. They also have sweet desserts included. It is always quiet there at lunch time. And the owners are so sweet. Love that place!

I’ve only been for the lunch buffet, but if my attendance is any indication, it’s pretty good. In other words, I’ve been here for lunch about 6 – 7 times in the last couple months so it’s good enough to keep me coming back in an area with many options. The selection usually has 2 – 3 meat dishes, 3 – 4 vegetarian dishes, and usual standbys tandoori chicken, pakora, naan, plus a small salad/yogurt/condiment area. The service is incredibly friendly. And the price ain’t bad — about $ 9 for the buffet. The chicken tikka masala is especially good. The vegetable korma, if fresh, is also very good. If I had one negative, it’s that it is never crowded at lunch, and so the food is not changed out as often as a high volume place. But I am okay with that, because it’s a quiet, reasonable place to have lunch. I am a fan. 4 stars for the lunch buffet.

After walking by this place a few dozen times, wondering how they stay in business with 3 other Indian restaurants nearby, I decided to stop in for lunch. I’m now here for a second time, enjoying the $ 9 lunch buffet. Even though I hate 99% of buffet style restaurants, this is my new go-to lunch option. The décor isn’t anything special, but it’s a perfect atmosphere for lunch. I’ve eaten at the other trendy and popular Indian restaurant practically across the street, but was never really impressed by them. I’ve also eaten at some of the upscale Indian places around Durham/Chapel Hill/Raleigh, which are on a different level entirely. But if you’re looking for inexpensive Indian food at a reasonable price, Guru is perfect. One caveat, the chicken on the buffet is a little tougher than a made-to-order dish.

Good Food! Make sure you tell them if you like it spicier. Great Service and very kind people. Lunch buffet is awesome if you can make it. Linens and glasses like a high end restaurant.

I was pleasantly surprised by the buffet. Both palak paneer and baigan bartha on the day I came. Very nice samosas. The food appeared slightly ‘greasier’ than some places but good flavor. The chai was just okay. They brought naan to the table for me, which was nice. Worth going back!

Definitely not worth the money. I tried the vegetable biryani and it is probably the worst i ever had in a while.

Best Indian restaurant in the town. I and my husband have visited the place multiple times and have never been disappointed. The place definitely deserves more footfalls compared to the nearby indian restaurants. Do try their malai kofta, kadhai paneer and bullet naan… absolute delight to the taste glands. This is a really nice place with a good value for money.

My husband and I were the only people in Guru last Saturday night, and I can’t understand why! We ordered the non-vegetarian dinner for 2. I wanted samosas instead of the appetizer that the meal came with and our server offered to swap them out at no charge. Everything was really delicious. We could’ve used more rice, though. This is a nice alternative to Cholanad if you’d like to save a little bit of money.

I’ve been to Guru many times and had both the lunch buffet and the weekend buffet. On this occasion though, my husband and I just dropped in for dinner on a Monday night. The staff at Guru is always extremely nice and this time was no exception. We ordered vegetable samosas, pakoras, paneer naan, paneer mahkani, and chicken tikka masala. Everything was delicious and even after we left stuffed, we still had leftovers to take home for lunch the next day. I have no complaints. I know there is an ongoing debate since Guru and Mint are right beside eachother, and that a lot of people prefer Mint to Guru. Not me! The food at Guru is both less expensive and more authentic, the tables aren’t cramped together, and the staff at Guru are just genuinely more kind and attentive than the staff at Mint. Give Guru a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Yum. This place was lovely. I’d met the owners in a local store down the way and decided to try it out for dinner. My service was great and I devoured my curry. This place has rich, authentic flavor that beats out a lot of the competition.

Great value, great service, and a great selection. The buffet is perfect for lunch time– suitable for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The dinner menu also does not disappoint. I’ve tried a variety of the dishes and I’ve never left unsatisfied. This is definitely a favorite local Indian restaurant of ours! :)

I have gone to all the indian restaurants in Chapel Hill. This is the best value for money restaurant. Offers good Indian but still not so expensive.

8÷24÷14: Edit after actually eating dinner at Guru. I’ve got to give them another start for dinner. We ate there last night, and everything was really good. The aloo naan was the best that I’ve ever eaten. I got the Chicken Madras which flavorful and spicy. My picky vegetarian wife got the Navraton Korma which she claims was also very good. So, I maintain what I said previously: The buffet isn’t as good as the other indian buffets around town, but the dinner we ordered was better than dinner that I have ordered at Tandoor or Mint. Poor Guru… It can’t be easy being next to the superior Mint, and across the street from the beloved Vimala’s. There’s been a few times that I ate at Guru out mercy because they had no patrons while Mint was absolutely buzzing. Here’s the deal, Guru doesn’t seem to give their all on the buffet line. One time I saw French Fries on the buffet. Another time I saw Chicken Nuggets. They have all the normal staples of an Indian Buffet, but never seem to have anything special. My picky vegetarian wife insists that they actualy have really good food if you order off the menu, especially their stuffed breads. One time while eating at the buffet we wanted to order some stuffed bread in addtiona to the buffet. Well, the server didn’t understand our intention, brought us some garlic naan and brusquely told us to go get naan from the buffet line if we wanted any more. Whatevsss. Bottom line: It’s okay, not as good Mint next door, or as good as Tandoor down the street, but it’s cheaper, and won’t be crowded.

Guru is a hidden gem on Franklin Street– an authentic, delicious Indian cuisine restaurant! It may appear less modern/fancy than others on the block, but the food only leaves your taste buds longing for more! I’ve only been here for dinner(dine-in, take-out) on multiple occasions, as it will probably remain my favorite Indian restaurant in Chapel Hill. Never been here for the lunch buffets, so can’t provide any reviews regarding the buffets. The meat in the curry dishes are tender and smooth, while the deep aroma of spices is perfectly complimented in the curry. Here are my favorite dishes: — Chicken Tikki Masala — Lamb Saag — Garlic Naan My favorite aspect of this restaurant is that the service is warm and inviting, despite its décor. They are flexible with your taste bud and will create a curry dish less/more spicy according to your liking. I usually order my Tikki Masala«spicy, spicy.» Next time you’re craving authentic, richly– flavored Indian curry, make sure to check out Guru!

We ate here tonight and really enjoyed it! Started with samosas and papdi chaat – amazing! The highlight though was the vegetable korma – seriously the best korma that I’ve ever had – better than Mint next door. The other nice thing was the price and the laid back atmosphere. They did some renovations since the previous restaurant was there, so it is an attractive dining space, while not being too pretentious. It was also cheaper than Mint and Vimila’s, so it makes for delicious, affordable Indian food! We will definitely be back!

Great place, cheaper than the several nearby, great service. Came here last night with a group on the holiday school break on a Sunday night, so needless to say it was pretty empty. We were seated right away, had no problems getting the one television switched to the game we wanted, and service was prompt. The veggie samosas were delish, and the garlic naan was crusty and good.(Although maybe a little too crusty.) I had the chicken vindaloo, ordered it spicy, and I was wholly satisfied. The wife ordered the chicken tiki masala(god, I don’t know if I’m remembering the names correctly here) and it was also very good. Our friends split the vegetarian meal and I would totally order that at some point. Everything was straight up good Indian food. No frills, but no problems, either. I’ll try the other Indian places nearby, but so far, I’m likin this one.

This was our Third Indian Restaurant Tonight for our Three Month Anniversary of dating! Tomato Soup, Naan Bread, Kulfi and the BEST Masala Chai in Town! Best of three Chapel Hill’s Masala Chai’s Tonight!!! The Naan Bread was Very Good, freshly baked, yummy! We ordered the Plain Naan and it had great flavor, even when compared to fancy flavored ones in other places! Tomato Soup was good, nice variety of spice flavors, made to your spiciness preference. The Service was Excellent! We sat at the Bar and Talked to the Lady(maybe the Owner?) which was informative and delightful! Great Prices!
