For those who have not heard, this location has closed after around 30 years at Eastgate(landlord was apparently getting ready to raise rent). All of the barbers are still working however, they’ve moved one shopping center over to Village Plaza and working out of Jim Clark’s Barber Shop. FYI — Max is working M-W, and Wayne Th-Fri in the new shop.

Truly the worst haircut i have ever gotten. I have to start school soon and i don’t even think i can go now. I brought in two pictures of myself to show exactly how i wanted it. I might as well have said just put a bowl on my head and have at it. This might be nice for a 2 year old boy, not a teenager.

I chose this barber shop several years ago because it was close to my house. I’ve never had any reason to go anywhere else. TJ is my regular, but they’re all pretty good in a pinch. As a bonus, I took my three year old son here for his first real haircut. They couldn’t have been nicer to him, which means a lot since I took him to a second shop on a day when Eastgate was closed and the guy there was rough and rude to a 3 year old trying his hardest to sit quietly while someone is manhandling his head. But that’s another review… Anyway, these guys are great. $ 18 is a little high(hence the 4 stars), but it seems to be pretty normal in Chapel Hill. If I ever move I’ll miss these guys.

In response to Harry F: I had been going to Eastgate Barber Shop for a year and dealt with all of the barbers in there. I got plenty of bad haircuts over that period. My review was not based on one negative experience. It was based on the fact that the barbers did not listen to my simple instructions. Look at the other reviews and notice a pattern: barbers not following instructions and cutting customers’ hair too short.

Unilocal reviews often reveal more about reviewer personalities than the business at hand. The relatively low rating of this barbershop is the product of three one-star reviews. These were written by users who seem only to use Unilocal to pan restaurants and businesses based on single negative experiences. Collectively, these three users have posted an average rating of 1.7 stars. This is simply a case of negativity run amok rather than anything really bad about this establishment. Eastgate Barber & Style is an excellent barber shop, owned and operated by the same group of barbers for decades. The folks who run this shop are friendly and professional, and give excellent haircuts for a modest price. The atmosphere is very comfortable, a product of the business having been a neighborhood staple for years. These are the characteristics of a top-notch barber shop. Whether you’ve been getting your hair cut here for years or it’s your first time in Chapel Hill, the guys at Eastgate Barber & Style will take good care of you.

I wish i could give less than 1 star. This place was way too expensive for the awful cut you get. I’ll quickly list what was wrong w/this place. 1) filthy… roach crawling on ground while i was in chair. hair hasnt been swept. just plain gross. 2) $ 18 for a barber. are you out of your mind? sadly I didnt notice the cost until after i was in the chair. never been to an $ 18 barber before. 3) if you aren’t a UNC fan and/or a regular, they seem that they couldnt care less about you. 4) they ask what you want done to your hair and then proceed to do whatever the hell they feel like doing and completely disregard your wishes. I asked for a 1.5 guard fade. there’s no fade to be found. My advice: go to the«Tarheel Barbershop» off of Roxboro in C-hill. The barbers there couldnt be nicer and they actually take time to do the cut right… and it’s not 18 bucks for crap. You ask for fade, you get one.

I just got a cut from them today and and I definitely agree with«Martin J» about the bad haircut. I specifically asked the barber not to cut my hair too short and guess what he did? He cut it way to short. When I got home I saw that he had missed parts of my left side. I have to go somewhere else to get it fixed. There is a reason they turn you around so you are not facing the mirror, so you can’t see their screw up. Who cares that they have a TV and talk about sports? All I care about is for my barber to listen to me and give me a decent haircut. Is that too much to ask?

There aren’t enough real barbershops in the world — there is nothing better than an old school barbershop with plenty of newspapers and quality man time. Eastgate is Chapel Hill’s contribution. 1. Location. Eastgate is behind the Bruegger’s bagles in Eastgate shopping center on the same side as the new Trader Joe’s. 2. Barbers. I’ve switched off going to either Max or TJ for the past 6 years. Both are great. The other guys are good too, just not my regulars. 3. Ambiance. There’s a tiny TV in the corner and plenty of Chapel Hill, Durham, University and Raleigh newspapers. Every manly magazine is on the rack. 4. Bonus. Do you enjoy sports? Are you a Tarheel fan? All of our favorite local celebrities pop through here on a regular basis for their haircuts. 5. They do not take reservations. 6. Cost is $ 18, recently moved up from $ 16. 7. They open at 8AM and are open every weekday. 8. They are next door to a women’s hair salon if you are trying to coordinate with a significant other. 9. They are good at cutting kids hair too.
