I’ve never shopped here, but I go to Chapel Hill Cleaners, which is two doors down on a weekly basis. Yesterday, when I visited, the cleaners sign read«Open,» but the door was locked. There was a sign on the door that read to visit Brown’s Hardware two doors down. I did, and an elderly man sat behind the counter. Evidently he has a deal worked out with the owner of the cleaners to help people in and get them their clothes when the owner of the cleaners can’t be there. What a gent! Such nice community, small-town feel, I love it. I’m going to make it a point to shop at Brown’s for my paint & hardware needs from now on!

This store is surprisingly large and well-stocked. Just about the only thing you can’t actually get here is the lumber that you want to nail or paint. The guys working there are a down-home kind of friendly, even if walking into the place does make you feel like you’re stepping into a dungeon of despair. The whole operation is deceptively slick and well-organized. Assuming that you came in for paint, tools, or other home-improvement schtick, you’ll leave happy.
