New Century Hair Design & Tanning

Dorothy at New Century Hair Design does a terrific job. She has done my hair for years. I’ve had her do everything from perms, cuts, to coloring and highlighting my hair. The shop has a Key West feel to it and everyone there is super friendly and accommodating.

It was a pleasure to find such a salon with Great service. The atmosphere is very layed back a kind of at home feeling.

Unfortunately, after a few more visits, I have to downgrade my review for the following reasons:
Primarily,
1) I judge how well a hair stylist/​barber is by the feedback I get from friends/​family/​coworkers — I don’t let just my own personal opinion bias my review of how well my hair was cut. So, I’ve have my hair cut at New Century three times now. All three times no one has said anything positive to me about it in the days or weeks after it. And it’s not for lack of folks talking to me — since I’ve relocated my haircut money elsewhere, I’ve gotten nothing but great reviews after getting hair cuts at the new place I patronize. Same me, same hair requests, same people I interact with. The only thing different now is the stylist/​store I use (no longer New Century Hair).
Secondly,
2) While having her fingers up in my scalp, she shouldn’t go telling me that the guy sitting in the waiting area is the local mortician whom she does his clients’ hair for. And when I say clients, she wasn’t talking about the upright ones. This might not creep other people out, but it certainly did me!
3) I didn’t appreciate some of her comments said about trifling things. It’s always nice to have a stylist who engages in chit-​chat about random things under the sun. But she made comments about politics, news, and other things then proceeded to argue with me — captive audience — about how right she was. OK, you won the battle, but lost the war — at least in keeping my business. Sorry, I don’t look forward to listening to opinionated palaver from somebody cutting my hair then paying over 20 bucks for it. Keep your comments to yourself!
I go out of my way to support local businesses, but the haircut and irritation for $ 22 at New Century Hair just isn’t for me.
