Johnsen & Swan Leather Studio and Craft Gallery

I have been here twice, once during the spring of 2012 and once a year later. Both times I visited this store and if you like leather works made by local Southwest artists in a Southwestern style, this is for you. A couple of weeks ago, I started looking for a new wallet. I wanted something in leather, made by a local craftsman, in Southwest style and found nothing like the stuff I was looking for in Santa Fe. Everything in downtown Santa Fe caters to the tourists and since business practices are fierce, much of the stuff is made outside the country to cut down on prices.
Here, however, I found this wonderful wallet made by an artist in Arizona. This goes to show that there is a market for local quality made stuff even in a remote area as Madrid, NM. If only Santa Fe had something similar to offer.
PS. I heard the place is for sale. So it might, or might not be around for much longer.

Gayle and I enjoyed stopping by on our way from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. Eleanor Strathdee and Judy Swan offer a wide variety of leather and crafts products. They also were kind enough to provide a missing piece to one of my son’s art objects.
