Hy-Vee Food Store

I love this HyVee. Truly do. The employees are fab, quick to find items, nice neighborhood size, only Caribou Coffee within 50 miles. However, the prices are outrageous. I only purchase cage-​free eggs. HyVee is $.70 more than the CoOp around the corner for exact same brand. Another example: why buy non-​organic lettuce that wilts and gets all gooey that you have to toss ¾ of it at this Hyvee for $ 2.99 when you can buy organic at the CoOp for only $ 1 more? This HyVee charges $ 1.99/lb for red onions whereas the one on N. Dodge in IC is $ 1.79/lb. The Dodge Street store also carries more variety such as the jumbo sized boil in the bag rice and at a way better price. Another example: Target has better prices on soda by $ 1-​$ 2. Unfortunately, my business at this HyVee and all HyVees will be waning. Say it ain’t so… I don’t want to leave but economics weigh out on this one. Sorry, HyVee. You’re losing ½ to ¾ of my business. I did not want this to happen. Needs must, though… if you improve your pricing, I will update this review.

Our favorite Hy Vee. We normally go on Saturday mornings and have breakfast in the café. Very good quality. Always bright, clean and helpful employees.

This is, by far, my favorite Hy Vee in CR. (Before the remodel a year ago, Edgewood Rd. had that place on my list.) This store is large enough to carry everything I need and then some, while being small enough that I don’t have to walk 3 miles to get my groceries. And they will special order anything else. But let’s get to the important part:
Chinese. Express.
Generally, I think Hy Vee Chinese food is at best bland and at worst, gross. But this Chinese Express is run by a manager who will make his own recipes when you ask. I’m in there at least once every week requesting spicy tofu and vegetable stir fry and I have never been disappointed. The texture is perfect, and the sauce is excellent. They also have veggie egg rolls for when I’m in a hurry or just want a snack before grocery shopping.
Also, for any light eaters/​vegetarians/​vegans out there: the fruit on the salad bar is always out early in the morning, and the Kitchen will make you hashbrowns with vegetables if you ask. This is definitely a regular stop for me.

This Hy-​Vee is my favorite! I like the layout, the aisles are wider, its very clean, and has great employees. Their cheese department has the widest variety I’ve ever seen, and their produce department is great too. I really like how the whole building was renovated to be eco friendly, with floors that absorb spills and motion sensor lights. Keep up the great work!

While Hy Vee has a decent amount of variety the pricing is way out of sight. Sometimes easily $ 1.00 to $ 2.00 more. No wonder they have all these gimmicks including the gas card.
The produce seems to hang around longer on the shelf than normal having experienced spoiled oranges in prepackaged items as an example. As stuff gets older don’t see price going down.
No offense to the lady who makes it because she can only work with what she is given, but the sushi is absolutely bad. I recommend don’t buy that here.
Employees are nice but some, not all, management not so nice.
I do go to Hy Vee for some things I can’t get elsewhere, otherwise generally go to Walmart but they don’t always have the variety. However, they aren’t exactly cheap anymore but overall remain way less expensive than Hy Vee.
If your careful their produce is pretty good. By the way we need a Trader Joe’s in this town. Finally, there breakfast menu is excellent.

I used to avoid this Hyvee but since the remodel… I now avoid the others. Wednesday’s have $ 5.50 all you can eat chinese. It was much better than many of the other buffets in town but cheaper. Since the remodel they also have sushi and a pretty sweet wine and spirits section.

I like this store and shop here often but don’t buy very much. The service is great and there are plenty of tasty foods but the prices are higher than a cat’s back. A can of soup I regularly buy at the store with the red bulls eye costs $.79 but at this chain is $ 1.59. Mainly I just buy the sale items.
I don’t often purchase meat here — much of the beef and pork is Hormel and injected with 12% «flavoring solution»… For the same money, I prefer to go to meat lockers and get the good stuff.
The artisan breads are very good but a little too pricey for me. The same goes for the deli — tasty food but too expensive.
This is a beautiful store with many wonderful foods to choose from. I just wish it was more affordable.

I’ve lived near this Hy-​Vee for about 3 years but continued to go to the Edgewood Hy-​Vee because they had a better and larger selection, after the renovations though the only reason that I go to Edgewood is if I need to do some shopping after midnight or I need better Health Market selection, since the Oakland rd local isn’t open after midnight and has a small Health Market selection. So far the renovations have been great, the selection in the main store is really good, however the health market is still lacking and I hope to see it get larger.

Oakland Road has just been elevated from two stars by the opening of brand new Wine & Spirits and Health Market sections. Not only is the selection bigger and better but the vibe feels like an entirely different store.
The second Wednesday of every month is the 10% off paper bag sale. I already do most of my grocery shopping here but now I feel good about it.

Where there’s a helpful smile in every isle, or close to it, there is someone always close buy that will help you find anything you need, always super nice staff, I always go here when we have a cook outand get great steaks, ribs, shrimp etc…
